Remember to visit Kundgol , when you come to India . The place where he finally settled down
Kundgol , a quaint little Railway station where trains stop often - for getting the clear signal to troop into Hubli junction .
The railway track is at about 10 feet lower than the level of the landscape around it. So one has to climb up steps to exit the railway station . Like a Subway without a roof .
It is a very cute station. made cuter by the fact that as one climbs up the steps , a shop selling Hacchida Mandakki greets you with a warm welcome .
Hacchida Mandakki ( Puffed rice wetted with masala powders ) and Tea are earliest signals that we haved moved away from snobbish Old Mysore State to the lands that have seen a great many cross winds blowing .
Hubli and upwards , where one can meet the most friendly people on earth .

Left home ?
ran away - travelling ticketless- singing his way to Benares. Begum Akhtar met him on the sidelines of AIR and took him home .And told him .. Why search so far when you have Sawai Gandharv closer home ?
By that time he had spent time with other Musicians , but was sore that the Gharanas were close ended ones , with little coming out to chaps not belonging to the family.
Sawai Gandharv was a disciple of Karim Khan who came to Mysore on the invitation of the King .
What a glorious set of historical events that has shaped the music of this region in Karnataka !!!!

kundgol sounds like a quaint town indeed - maybe we can organize a field trip to those parts where all these great singers came from. My understanding is that modern-day south and western karnataka being part of the old Bombay Presidency has had a lot of deep common influences and crossover from today's Maharastra, even Madhya Pradesh areas. Hence the large number of Hindi-Maharashtrian origin singers in HM from the area. Please correct, if I am wrong.
