CRama:
Thanks for mentioning the correct name. When I searched for 'Sri Narasimhachariar' I could not get any lead.
Here is a tribute to Sri M.A. Narasimhachar, who passed away on July 7, 2004 at Bangalore, at the age of 83. http://www.kutcheribuzz.com/news/20040806/narasimha.asp
I understand that his full name is: Sri Mandayam Annadorai Narasimhachar.

Re: Photographs of Young Artists of 1950's
M.A. Narasimhachar was a Sangeethabhushanam from Annamalai University; second batch. He has taught innumerable students in Mysore and was known to be an excellent instructor.
He has given special programmes on AIR on the songs of Anai-ayya, Veena kuppayyar etc. and lecdemo-s like an all-Ahiri concert at gAyana samAja, Bangalore.
His two daughters live in Bangalore and have inherited his massive repertory.
Having spent his childhood in Melkote, he had learnt several older songs prevalent there among the Arayars, in
cluding some of the vAnamAmalai compositions.

"D. Vasudevan (1930) is the younger brother of late D. Krishnamurthy. In those days, both the brothers were called ‘Salem Brothers’. They owe to their father, Duraisamy Iyer for their career in music world. Their father was very much interested in drama. So he sent his children, Vasudevan and Krishnamurthy to Madurai Bala Vinodha Sangeetha Sabha run by Nawab Rajamanickkam Pillai to learn vocal Carnatic music. When Rajaji happened to visit their concert, he noticed them uneducated and made arrangements for them to get primary education. Vasudevan’s family came to Salem along with the drama troupe. Here he and his brother began to learn Carnatic vocal music soon. They became famous Carnatic singers and were treated equally with the famous singers like Chellam Iyengar and Desigan. Vasudevan worked in the Modern Theatres music troupe also.
After the demise of his brother Krishnamurthy in 1972, Vasudevan started to perform solo concerts. He had performed many concerts for All India Radio programmes. In 1989, he was honoured with the title ‘Isai Ayana Mani’."

I know about one Thangam Gopalan pictured above. She was the mother of my schoolmate (SSLC in 1967). A very good singer, her husband was a pathologist and well-to-do, unfortunately passed away a few years ago.

SP Ramu and SP Sarada were famous in seventees. They had cut some gramaphone records as well. The old Ceylon Radio used to broadcast their songs. I had heard some radio concerts over AIR Madras also. Subsequently they had gone into oblivion.

Both Sri T.P.Kailasam and Sri.S.Janakiraman were well known musicians and well respected teachers in Kumbakonam during 70s and 80s. They were AIR Trichi grade A artists then.I have couple of friends and classmates(in school) who learnt from them and later on became AIR graded artists themselves.
Janakiraman mama was our neighbor for about a decade. He currently lives in Chennai(I think) and was honored by PSN Disciples Foundation this year.

Re: Photographs of Young Artists of 1950's
#1 in the second row is AlandUr NaTarAjan, the brother of Dr. S.RAmanAthan. He accopmanied Prof. RamanAthan in many of the former's performances. His son N.SigAmaNi, is a talented violinist, who plays often for dance performances.
T.S. TAtAchAr was a violinist from mysore/ Bangalore trained by SangItakalAnidhi R.Anantakrishna SharmA. His son T.T.Srinivasan too, is a violinist, [and a member of rasikas?]
T. Rukmini (B.Sc!) was at Bangalore for a long time. She gained much confidence after Mali appreciated her vAdanam, when she played with him in a Town Hall concert, and played ranjani (for the RTP) very well.
p.s. - P. Bala, thanks a lot for your postings of these excellently preserved, and equally well presented pictures. rasikas will cherish them!

Re: Photographs of Young Artists of 1950's
S.Ananthalakshmi in page 7a.is my Father's Ammanji-manni (i.e)Father's maternal uncle's daughter in law.
Her husband,my Father's Ammanji is a great vocalist - Azhwarkurichi N.Subramania Bhagavathar who conducted Thyagaraja Aradhani @ Azhwarkurichi for nearly 5 decades and who died last year.He had done gurukula vAsam with Alathur Bros.I learned sarali & jandai varisai from him as a 7 yr.old.He chose to remain at his native AzhwArkurichi and led a very humble life.
Smt.S.Ananthalakshmi learned violin from her father(a very famous violinist those days;forgot his name.I will ask my mother and post here later) and performed many duets with him.I have seen a b/w photograph of the duo at their home. She had accompanied the likes of MLV in the late 40s and early 50s.
Once in a ThiruvaiyAru Thyagaraja Aradhanai it seems every one was singing kalyAni.Ariyakudi then came and told her"Look here.If any one starts singing kalyAni put your bow down".Of course in a lighter vein.
She led a very miserable life having separated from her husband in the later part of her life.My father tried his level best to join them and succeeded partially. She accompanied TNS once @ the Utsavam after joining back her husband in AzhwArkurichi which I attened as a 10 or may be 11 yr.old.Less than a year they got separated again.
A very nice lady.In a family function very long back, she beautifully explained to me the diff.between SAramathi and mArgahindOlam.

Re: Photographs of Young Artists of 1950's
I fully endorse CMLover's comment--But for this forum and especially to rasikas like PB,Keerthi et al---,these artistes who -- in their days showed lots of promise -- would never have been highlighted--the dearth of media outlets, rigid institutions and family circumstances--prominent young girls having to get married--- often to individuals who out of ignorance or insecurity failed to encourage them--all these factors not only robbed these talented artistes their share of fame and renown but robbed-- the CM music landscape of fresh invigorating talent.
Kudos to the Rasikas who are trying to preserve for posterity.

Just having a look at this thread after some time.
Ramnad Raghavan (mrudangam) is there. T.N.Krishnan's brother Mani is another. Kanakambujam, the mrudangam player?
Padmavathy--the other sister of Lalgudi?

Re: Photographs of Young Artists of 1950's
Just some people whom i think have not been mentioned in this thread. hope to not repeat.
and some of the guesses may be wrong too.
Maharajapuram Nagarajan
A cousin of Maharajapuram Santanam. He lives in Thanjavur/Trichy and is renowed guru in that region. Had once tried to get him perform at Music Club IIT Madras, however it did not materialize then, as he was not available on the dates that we wanted.
NC Soundaravalli
She lived in Triplicane and performed rather regularly in chennai. She passed away last month.
A Srinivasaraghavan
He still lives in chennai. One of his daughters, Smt Padmini Venkateshan is known to me. Prof SP Venkateshan is a faculty in IIT Madras and Smt Padmini organises Thyagaraja Utsavam in IIT Madras campus. I have heard Sri Srinivasaraghavan sing on these occasions.
Thanjavur L Venkatesa Iyengar
He still lived in Thanjavur till a few years ago. He passed away some years ago while in his 90s. Thirukarugavur Sri Srinivasaraghavan who happens to be his sammandhi had told about him when he had come to IIT Madras for a concert.
Chittoor Thyagarajan
A violinist who regularly performed. His daughter T Hemamalini is a graded artist at AIR and regularly accompanies concerts in the city.
Thiruvarur N Balam
She lives in chennai and regularly accompanies artists in the city. Her son N Saikrishnan is a percussion artist.
Just a wild question. Is Mrudangist Smt N S Rajam her sister? Is she related to Sri N Ramani? (as sureshvv already says)
Melakaveri krishnamurthy
Father of Melaveri Thyagarajan and Melakaveri Balaji? (just a wild guess!)
