Is he famous for ShenjuruTTi thillAnA or jinjoti thillAnA . I am assuming the famous thillAnA "thiranA thom ta thiranA" by veena seshannA is in shenjuruTTi

There is a book of compositions of Vina Seshanna published in 1965 by Sangeetha Kalabhivardhini Sabha of Mysore. Editors: B.K.Padmanabha Rao and H.Yoganarasimham.

Is the book still available? Does anyone have the contact info for the Kalabhivardhani Sabha of Mysore? Please do share it. I know Smt MS Sheela has released an album on Veena Seshanna compositions. He is the Shishya of Mysore sadAShiva rAu.

pvr246,
My point about the thillAnA is ,the rAgam is in shenjuruTTI and not jinjOti as both are different rAgAs.

See this topic

http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=996

But at the end of that topic, I am as confused as I was at the beginning. But I am going to say that, Jhinjoti as is called in Karnataka is same as Senjurutti in Tamil Nadu, when applied to Carnatic Music. I have no idea of Hindustani Jhinjoti

This depends on the space and time of reference IMO..

In Karnataka, the name jhanjhUTi is normally used, whether there is anyaswara prayOga or not. From my experience, in Tamil nadu, chenchurutti is the version without anya swaras, and jhanjhUTi to the version with anya swaras.

I believe the intention of the composer was not to use anya swaras in this tillAna.

Not 100% sure but I do think there are (tamil) songs in cencurutti which use anya swaras (e.g. SrI cakra rAja).

There is a nice CD titled Veeneya Bedagu - compositions of Veene Sheshanna produced by by Vara Enterprises Bangalore.
Mysore V Subramanya, Veene Sheshanna's great-grandson has co-ordinated the production of this CD, wherein Vidushi Rajalakshmi Thirunarayanan has rendered Sheshanna compositions.

In the volume 2 that I have, there are eight compositions including two swarajatis, one varna, two keerthanas (in ganamurthi and an elaborate rishabhapriya), and three thillanas.

There are some contact phone numbers on the CD cover - I can send an email with that info. if any one is interested.

There must be a volume 1 of this series. I could get only volume 2 in a store in Bangalore about two years back.

Lakshman,

Cannot thank you enough for the response ! We (my wife, Subha, and I) were specifically looking for the charana with the mudra in it, as it was missing in the version of the lyrics with us.

Sreeni, please do post the contact details on the CD cover.

Sreeni,

In a Lec-Dem last year at Gayana Samaja ( Veenaya Bedagu 25th jul 2010) on Veena Seshanna's compositions, Vid D.Balakrishna, introduced some of his thillanas , there were few rare and interesting ones. The one in Sankarabharanam, one in thODi and kEdAram were very good. Have you come across any vocal rendition of these ? The thODi one especially was very good. He was explaining that this thillana has phrases which are 'gamaka-mukta' ( plain notes).

Jayan,

No, I have not come across any vocal versions of the tillAna-s that you mention. That is my lament here. We don't hear much of Veene Sheshanna's compositions.

I am hoping there might be some vocal recordings ( R K Srikantan?). And, I am hoping that this thread will generate some interest and bring out such hidden treasures!

In Amrithavarshini FM 100.1 they aired a program spanning 3-4 weeks of all compositions of Veena seshanna, a couple of months back.
Never got to record it. But it was a very good program. Artists who participated were R. K. Srikantan, M. S. Sheela ...
