The Carnatica Brothers, K.N.Shashikiran and Chitravina P.Ganesh will perform a marathon vocal concert starting from 9 am, on the 9th of September. The concert will go on for as long as the artistes are able to perform.

The concert is an attempt to spread World peace and harmony and is dedicated to the people who lost their lives in the 9/11 tragedy, the tsunami, the earthquakes and the recent civil wars in Lebanon and SriLanka. It is also an attempt to set a record in Carnatic vocal music, for non-stop singing. It may be noted that Chitravina Ganesh already holds the World Record for the longest recital on a slide instrument. He played the Chitravina non-stop for over 32 hours in May 2004.

If not world peace and harmony, at least this 'marathon' effort of Carnatica Brothers brings together many violinists and percussionists on one stage together -though in succession perhaps.
Such unity, may it prevail in the world (unity means peace and harmony). The concert is free and rasikas can go when they can and stay as long as they wish to. There is no politics involved here, only music, I presume. And to hear veterans like M.S.Anantharaman, Umaiyalpuram, Guruvayur and others...
After all, charity begins at home...

Hi all,

It's been 21 hours since the Carnatica brothers started singing. The concert is still on and is expected to end at 9 am today, the 10th of Sept. They have rendered 94 compositions until now.

Their enthusiasm is infectious and their music blemishless - even at this hour - something that has to be seen to be believed!

A detailed song list will be put up later.

Nivedita,

I was trying to find more details about this marathon concert over the net, but am unable to get any info anywhere. Even the Carnatica website announcement hasn't been updated. Could you please fill us in on the details like the total duration, accompanists etc? A list would also be greatly appreciated.

An achievement that all Carnatic lovers should be proud of! Has someone documented the event with a full song list? It would be interesting to see what ragas and kritis were covered. Were there some RTPs too?

What a repertoire, that too of masterpieces!

Nivedita, am I right in assuming that the occasional Varnam in-between kritis is when a new set of accompanists took over?

Remarkable achievement. Good for CM, Good for Society and Good for them. I know the disciples of Sri Puttaparti SaiBaba performing bhajans for 24hrs on his birthday. But even that the followers do turns by turns. Here 2 guys performing for whole 24hrs. That 113 is darbariKannada, must be having the 3rd octave a bit. The spectrum is wide and composers too. God bless them and their efforts.

Lakshman told me a while ago on this forum, that the Tillana is in Sivaranjani, NOT Misra Sivaranjani...

Overall, a nice list.

Nivedita,
Thank you. What a feat!
I do not see a variety of accompanists as we were given to believe. The ones who did come performed as devotedly as the singers, one can guess. M.S. Anantharaman's name was mentioned in the earlier info. Being the gentleman he is, he wouldn't have absented himself but for health reasons...

arasi,

Almost all the accompanists that I've mentioned in my first post, including Shri Umayalapuram Sivaraman and Shri M.S.Anantharaman accompanied them. In the song list, I've only mentioned the vidwans who accompanied them during the night.

The Limca Book of Records has recognized this concert as a national record and sent the Brothers a certificate, which has been put up here: http://carnaticabrothers.blogspot.com/2 ... cords.html

Also, the Brothers are currently on a concert tour of Europe and have been performing in places where Carnatic music has never been heard before. They've blogged about their experience here: http://carnaticabrothers.blogspot.com/

nivedita, the brothers note on their blog that they've composed and sung pallavis in French and German - could you provide details on these? Recordings will be even nicer; and I'd urge a special CD set with these European-themed pallavis.

what an effort? It is very difficult to concentrate for so long.
They must have a good throat to sustain such long singing.
Congrats to the brothers.

This youtube clip is from their blog

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=up2-GSzW ... tube_gdata

Apparently this was taken towards end, around 23rd hour!!

Leave alone signing, think about squatting in one place, and managing with liquids, no sleep etc!!

As it comes across, Shashikiran is a powerhouse of energy. Ganesh who does not seem that wway (he's more placid) proves to be his 'bro''s equal!

I have just forgotten my usual attitude of "I can't see the point in setting and breaking records"!

What an astonishing accomplishment. How incredible to have that repertoire, not only in the mind (I guess they and most singers would know many more songs in total) but fresh, and singable on the spot.

As hari says, even to sit on stage for that long is amazing. It is hard work to do it for three hours...

Congratulations to all involved.

I just recollected that N.Ravikiran also played a 24-hour marathon concert in chitraveena. When i googled, it was in 1985, and Ravikiran was just 18 then!!

What a great achievement in the family...

You are right. Squating and managing liquid. I am sure they can go to bathrooms. But squating for so long
needs separate practise.

One of the French pallavis they sang was in Mohanam, set to Adi tala (2 kalai). The words, as they've written in their blog, were: Salut Paris, ville de la beauté <arudi karvai> et de la culture! (meaning: Salutations Paris, O city of beauty and culture)

The other French pallavi was in Abheri: priere au Dieu pour la paix <arudi karvai> et l'amour (meaning: Pray to God for peace and love!)

I'm not too sure about the German pallavi, and I don't think the Brothers have recorded the concerts, but I'll see if I can get a recording.

I think the Limca Records allow a 15 min break every 8 hours. The Brothers, however, never moved from their positions on the stage during the concert. The only thing they did in preparation was maintain silence the day before the concert.

All those hours of sadhakam they did from their childhood would put them in good stead when it comes to such concerts. I dont think specific preperation is required.

Thanks, nivedita. These pallavis sound interesting, hope they can release a recording (or you can provide a sample here).
