Looking for Mridangam teacher (Skype)

Post by padmapada »

Namaskaram,
I am looking for a mridangam teacher who can teach on Skype, for my 6 year old son. He started learning last year when we were in Madras for 4 months and has been continuing over Skype. I am looking for someone who has had some experience teaching children (and has worked out methods to keep the learning interesting and fun), who will give us a lesson plan and stick to class schedules most of the time. He learns vocal too and I am dancer, myself, so I can help/give him inputs/help with his practice.
Please let us know if you know someone who can teach and is willing to teach over Skype.
Thank you.

I have heard that T.R.Rajamani, son of Palghat Mani Iyer teaches over Skype. It seems he mainly teaches students based in Australia.

Hi Padmapada: If your son is motivated to learn the Tanjore style of mridangam, the best teacher would be Parameswaran Sir of Palghat, who is a direct disciple of TK Murthy Sir and perhaps the most authentic source of Tanjore bani (as devised by Tanjore Vaidyanatha Iyerval), after Murthy Sir himself. Please see this thread for more details:

Padmapada ! A very nice name for a dancer !

Where exactly are you located ? Normally in these days of undue commercialism, skype lessons are also expensive. How sound are you financially ? And what time frame can you set for classes and practice ? Will suggest after getting your reply.

Hello Classicallover, for some reason I did not see these replies until now - I am located in the mid-west USA. My son's summer vacation begins later this month and goes on for 2.5 months, during which time he can attend class almost daily (he should - that would be a good, intensive way to begin and gain some momentum).
