Kanchi Maha Periyava

Post by venkatakailasam »

There are many heart blowing episode involving Maha Periyava...
one such...I am sorry no English translation is available...

Sri Kamakshidasan Sreenivasan Mama on Mahaperiyava -------

Speaking Without Speaking :

Once, during the mid-eighties, Kanchipuram Mahaswamiji Sri Chandrasekarendra
Saraswati Swamiji (Maha Periyava) desired to see Bhagavan Yogiramsuratkumar and
invited him through a personal attendant. He asked the personal attendant to
bring Yogiji.

Yogiji, accepting the invitation of Kanchi Maha Periyava, went to Kanchipuram.
Maha Periyava sat down and so did Yogi. Maha Periyava and Yogi looked at each
other. They did not speak a word to each other verbally. After looking at each
other for sometime, Kanchi Periyava, laughing lightly, said to his personal
attendant who had brought Yogi to Kanchi, “The matter for which he came is over.
You may take him back to Tiruvannamalai.”

Did they meet just to see each other or did they exchange some news? Nothing
could be comprehended. Yogi went back to Tiruvannamalai.

Later, when Yogiji was asked what really happened, as there was no conversation
and yet Maha Periyava remarked that the work was over, Yogi Ramsuratkumar
explained thus:

“We both spoke to each other – through the mind.

Kanchi Periyava said, ‘Bodendra chanted Rama Nama throughout his life. He was a
‘Peettadipathi’ of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. Later, installing his successor
for the Peetam he went around giving ‘upadesa’ of Rama Nama for all,
irrespective of caste and creed; he offered the ‘upadesa’ that the Name of the
Lord was the only ‘gati’ (succour) for all in this Kali Yuga. Living in this
manner his body was transformed into a ’siddha sarira’. He attained ‘jiva
samadhi’ in Govindapuram on the banks of the Cauvery. Living in ‘jiva samadhi’
for the past 300 years, to date, he is incessantly chanting Rama Nama. You may
go and remain in that Govindapuram where Bodendra is.’

This beggar replied, ‘No! No! For this beggar Tiruvannamalai is enough.’
Acharya also said, ‘OK’.

This is what we spoke!”

Dr. J.W. Elder's interview with H.H. Kanchi Paramacharya
extract.....
Dr. Elder:
Ahimsa has sometimes been included as one of the major teachings within Hinduism. In view of the recent Chinese attack on India, what would your interpretation be of the present day application of ahimsa?
His Holiness:
I think you are basing your question on ahimsa as Gandhi interpreted it. Gandhi in turn based his belief and ideas about ahimsa on Lord Buddha.
Both of them were in my opinion failures. This is my viewpoint.

When Nehru sent the Indian Army to Kashmir in 1947, he said that he was sending the army after consulting and taking instruction from Gandhi. Hence Gandhi's failure in ahimsa.

There is one version of Lord Buddha's death according to which he ate pig's flesh and dies as a consequence. Most of the Buddhist monks are non-vegetarians in the Buddhist countries such as Ceylon, Burma, Malaya and China. Therefore, Buddha's ahimsa has also failed.

I think the correct interpretation of ahimsa is that it is virtue applicable only to the highest asrama of the highest caste, the brahmin sanyasi. When he has renounced the world he should do no violence at all, not even pluck a leaf from a tree. If anybody beats him, he should do nothing to defend himself and he should receive them with joy

But this doctrine of ahimsa is not meant to be applied to nations or the leader of the nations. Some feel that ahimsa brought India here independence. This is not actually the case. The English had their own reasons for setting India free, whether or not we had been practicing ahimsa.
According to Sastras, the rigid of ahimsa are not applicable to the Government or to the leaders. Our Sastras make it clear that a ruler who does not defend his country fails in his duty.

The rules of defending the country are not only for China, but for the nation.

Of course, a leader should not wage an aggressive war.

Nor should he refuse to defend his country if it is attacked.

If a citizen is attacked by another citizen, our Sastras make it clear that it is the duty of the Government to protect its citizen even if it means capital punishment for the offender. Further the Sastras have made it clear to what extend everybody should follow ahimsa...

Source: In the Presence of the Divine
Narratives of experiences with Maha Periyaval Volume 1
Translated by: Sujatha Vijayaraghavan

A lady had no support except her son. The young man was afflicted by a skin disease that spread rapidly all over his body. He had an itching sensation everywhere. If he scratched himself, the skin would crack and start bleeding, leaving large patches of bruises. The mother could not bear her son’s suffering. She came straight to Periyava and narrated her woes.

“My son must be cured by Periyava’s grace. I know no other refuge, nor can I afford to give him medical treatment.”

Periyava told the lady and her son to stay on in the Matha. He instructed the boy not to eat or drink anything- no coffee, tea or milk even-except what was given as left-over from his own meal. The lady accepted the instruction in great joy.

Periyava gave certain instructions in the kitchen, which were not to be altered until he said so. His bhiksa consisted only of the inner stem of the banana tree. The attendant who cooked his meal would add a little salt to it and boil it after cutting it into pieces.

Periyava would accept this in bhiksa and drink some buttermilk. The remaining portion of the boiled banana stem and buttermilk would be given to the boy. He felt unhappy and tired of the diet at first. But reminding himself that it was ucchista from Periyava he took it gladly.

Ten days later the itching and the darkness of the skin began to subside. As the days passed, the skin was rid of its infection and it became clear and healthy. When forty days passed, the skin regained its perfect health and the boy looked radiant. The mother of the boy was delighted beyond words.

“Who can boast of such fortune! I thought my son had been afflicted by this disease because of the sins of the past. Now I know that it was the merit of the good deeds of the past that gave him the infection. Who could ever have the good fortune of eating the left-overs of Periyava’s meal for forty days at a stretch?” She could not adequately express her joy.

“It was all because of the great medicinal good of the banana stem” said Periyava.

“The banana stem was only an excuse! It was all because of Periyava’s ucchista” said the lady with heartfelt gratitude.

MAHATMA GANDHI was touring the South in the latter half of 1927. He had heard about the Sage of Kamakoti Peetha, and wanted very much to meet him. The Sage was camping at Palghat at the time in the course of his vijaya-yatra. The Mahatma went there on the 15th of October, 1927; the meeting took place on that day at Nellisseri village, Palghat, Kerala.
His, Holiness received the Mahatma in the cattle-shed situated in the backyard of the camp. It was a unique experience for the Mahatma. Here was an authentic successor of Sankara, dressed in a piece of’ ochre cloth made of khadi, and seated on the floor. The Acharya too appreciated the occasion provided for getting to know, at first hand, the leader of the nation who had adopted voluntarily the mode of a simple peasant’s life. At the very first sight, the Mahatma was drawn to the Perfection Incarnate that was seated before him. The atmosphere was surcharged with spiritual silence. After a few moments the Acharya spoke in Samskrit and invited the Mahatma to take his seat. Gandhiji offered his obeisance and sat near the Acharya. He said that, as he was not used to speaking in Samskrit, he would use Hindi if that was permitted, and that he could understand what is spoken in Samskrit. So, the conversation took place without the need for an interpreter-the Acharya spoke in Samskrit, and Gandhiji in Hindi.
This was purely a private interview; there were no reporters; and except for one or two attendants of the math, no one was present. The conversation, which took place in a most cordial atmosphere, lasted for over an hour.
On taking leave of the Acharya, the Mahatma gave expression to the immense benefit he had derived from this unique meeting. How profoundly he was drawn to the Acharya will be evident from an incident that occurred during the interview. It was 5.30 in the evcning. Sri C. Rajagopalachari who had accompanied the Mahatma had been waiting outside, went inside the cattle-shed and reminded the Mahatma about his evening meal; for the Mahatma would not take any food after 6 P.M. The Mahatma made this significant observation to Sri. C. Rajagopalachari: “The conversation I am having now with the Acharya is itsclf my evening meal for to day” As thc Mahatma was leaving ,after a very fruitful interview, the Acharya gave him a pomelo fruit with his blessings. The Mahatma received it with great reverence, remarking that pomelo is a fruit which he liked best
Later in the evening, Gandhiji addressed a public meeting in Coimbatore. Some people in tbe audience were eager to know about the interview Gandhiji had had earlier with His holiness. Gandhiji replied saying that they discussed points of mutual interest, that the interview was a private one, that because of this, news paper reporters were not present there and that there was no point in his disclosing the details of the interview. Nothing more was known about this historic meeting.

Above, you can see the house at Nelliseri Village, Palghat, Kerala, in which Mahatma Gandhi and H.H. Jagadguru Sankaracharya met on October 15, 1927.
A request was made to His Holiness in November 1968 for a message of the Seminar on The relevance of Mahatma Gandhi to the world of thought held at the University of Madras. Out of his abundant grace, jagadguru, the preceptor of the World, sent a message in which he recalled the meeting in 1927 with Gandhiji the Father of the Nation and paid the following tribute:
“We wish to place before this Seminar one of the’ many things which Gandhi and I we discussed when we met at Palghat, Kerala in the last Prashava year.
“Before Gandhiji arrived at Palghat there came the news of the assassination of Sraddhananda of the Arya Samaj. Referring to this incident Gandhiji remarked as follows:
“I have an apprehension in my mind that assassination of this kind would occur more often than now [in the coming years] Let not there arise in me hatred even in a small measure against the present assassin. There arises a desire in me that I should able to embrace with love even so cruel a man who commits a heinous crime, as this one, an atatayin. But it is extremely difficult to cultivate such heartfelt affection. Yet I shall make an honest attempt in this direction.”
All that we wish to point out that in this, world it is very rare even to hear about such a feeling expressed

When Sivasankaran, a long-standing devotee of Sri Matha came for darshan one day, an attendant treated him very harshly. Sivasankaran was very upset. He felt that he had been insulted. He was not inclined to run to Periyaval and complain. He had , however, an opportunity to talk to Periyaval.

Indirectly, but intending to unburden his heart, he said with a tact, as if he were injecting a needle into a banana fruit, "Some attendants at the Matha are pronouncedly bad. They commit wrong. They covet monetary gifts. I wonder how Periyaval manages with such people around him".

Periyaval was full of laughter. His expression seemed to suggest, "What you say is not new to me".

He then began to speak.

"Consider a factory where thousands work. Is everyone skilled and straightforward? Lakhs of people are working in Government offices. Everyone does not have the same level of commitment. Many do not work properly. Or if they do, they do their work imperfectly. It is not possible to send them home. The Government has its apex body functioning. That is important. It is enough if this apex body is alright. That much is enough. Only that much is possible. The Sri Matha is an empire in itself. Many kinds of attendants are necessarily to be found here...... Do you know Parameshwara?

Sivasankaran knew five or six gentlemen of the name of Paramesvara. He blinked, not knowing which if them Periyava was referring to.

"I was referring to Parameshwara, the Lord of Kailasa. He has a snake around his neck. He holds fire in his hands. A malevolent deity is kept under control beneath his feet. His retinue consists of corpses and ghosts. He roams all over the world taking all these along with him and performs his dance. If the snake were to be let loose it will go all over the place enjoying great freedom, frighten and bite everyone. If fire is uncontrolled, it will destroy settlements and wilderness alike. If malevolent forces are allowed to go about freely, they will attack anyone they encounter. As for corpses and ghosts, one need hardly say anything (about what they may do). Paramesvara's glory lies in keeping all these evil forces with him".

Sivasankaran stood in shocked silence. He had expected that Periyaval would quieten him with some placatory words. But Periyaval's reply sparkled with the perception of the ways of the world and was given in such unambiguous terms.

It is not Sivasankaran alone, but all devotees must attain greater refinemen

Is it not what MahaPeriva was following, what his guru has preached??

The summary of non-dualistic philosophy - Atma-Shatakam..
The non-dualistic philosophy (Advaita Vedanta) has been beautifully summarized by the great Hindu scholar and philosopher Ādi Śankarācārya in just six stanzas. This famous poem is popularly known as Atma-Shatakam (also known as Nirvana Shatakam)......

Mahaperiyava on Seshadri Swamigal

Last century witnessed the Trinities (brahma, vishnu, siva) Seshadri Swamigal (tiruvananamalai) ,Kanchi Mahaperiyava,Sri Ramana Maharishi (also known as Chinna Seshadri swamigal).

Here is the excerpt from Maha Periyava:

Maha Periyava
Shri.Bharanidharan : I was writing Arunachala magimai at that time. One day, I said to Maha Periyava that I am unable to locate the house where Shri Seshadri Swamigal lived between 1870 to 1889. Maha Periyava said why dont you take efforts to find the house? and directed me to various people. The search narrowed down to 2 to 3 houses. It was then I met the old man who built the house where Swamigal ived and he said when the elder(est) son was 19years he became mad and ran away from the house. So, finally, I located the Shri.Seshadri Swamigals house.

Then, when i went to have darshan of Maha Periyava who was at Kollavar Chatram, i briefed HIM on the developments. He said shall we buy the house, much like Sangeetha mummoorthigals houses have been bought in Thiruvaroor?. We formed a committee, collected money, the house was bought and named as Sri Kamakoti Seshadri Swamigal Nivasam. Maha Periyava then asked a portrait of Seshadri Swamigal to be kept in the house and Moovalur Gopala Dheekshitar was asked to shift his residence there and do agni hotram and ishti homam. then, under instructions of Maha Periyava, the aradhana of Swamigal was started in Margazhi Navami.

One day, Maha Periyava drew a plan on the sand at Sivasthanam, Thenambakkam, on how to build a mantap at Swamigals residence. A trust was formed with Nalli Kuppusamy Chetty, Sangupani Sivaraj Mudaliyar, K.R.Visvanathan and i was also a part of it. In 1985 Sehsadri Jayanthi was also started in Thai, Hastham, again under HIS instructions.

Seshadri Swamigal
On Jan 21st,1987 (Thai Hastham) I went to the mutt to receive Maha Periyavas blessings for the celebs to go off well and casually mentioned about Unjavrithi that i witnessed at Thiruvaiaru just a couple of days back, during Thiyagaraja aradhana. Maha Periyava said start unjavrithi in Seshadri Swamigal Jayanthi too. I said okay, will plan for the next year why next year? start now. i said i do not know anything about unjavrithi. Maha Periyava showed an old man standing nearby and said ivarukku thalaipagai kattu. sombu onnu tholla (shoulder) pottuko, and as you go on the street the ladies will put rice in the sombu, collect it and come back.thats all unjavrithi is all about. bhajanai?. no need for professionals, just the two of you would be enough. what to sing?. Maha Periyava thought for a moment, started putting thalam and began to sing Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Kaamaakshi, Jaya Jaya jaya Jaya kaamakoti, Jaya jaya Jaya jaya Seshadri.just repeat this. the next year, Papanaasam Sri Kunjumani Bhagavathar joined us.

One day, when we were talking about the registration of Seshadri Swamigals house, Maha Periyava asked me how many Seshadris are involved in this?. I said four.Maha Periyava said five first Seshadri Swamigal, then your friend who is with us now, the advocate who verified the documents, the clerk in the register office and, of course, your father!!.

Yet another day when i went to Thenambakkam, Maha Periyava sat like Seshadri Swamigal, with legs folded in the same way and his left hand palm holding the chin and asked is this not how HE is sitting?. I could not make out any difference between the two of them and tears welled up in my eyes.

It was some time later that Maha Periyava spoke those immortal words will I ever become like Seshadri Swamigal?, will I attain that level? If Maha Periyava whom all of us know is saakshath Parameswaran said this of Seshadri Swamigal, at what level HE must have been? Brahamananda nilai !!
Namasthe. This post is really encouraging and inspiring. myself and my husband are being blessed to have the opportunity of reading the book Shree Arunachala Mahimaiwith an utmost involvement and wondered that how much effort and initiation with the blessings of shree Mahaperiyava to bringout the treasure for the humanity and the generation to come Sri Baranidaran sir had taken up . Thank you sir. But the information contained in this post is new and unjavriti Mantram of Shree Maha periva and the three Kaliyug trinities enthusiastic.

by Shri Balasubramanian Krishnamurthi
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once a foreigner interested in the philosophy of Hinduism was waiting for Darshan of Mahaperiva ( Most revered Mahaswami) at Kanchi Mutt to clarify his doubt. Shortly, he got his appointment and without wasting time, he put forth his question.

Swamiji, I understand all your concepts, value them but for one particular faith (i.e.) same soul taking various births, papa, punya being carried forward to the next births etc. Can you please make me comfortable on this aspect? Because, in all our religions, we get the reward for what we do in this birth only. (i.e.) if we are honest, God is pleased and blesses us with benefits and we are dishonest, we get punished by Him.

At this point, Periva asked him, whether he owns a car and if he could do a favour of collecting some statistical information within Kancheepuram using his vehicle. The guest readily agreed, at the same time wondering why his question was not answered spontaneously.

Please, Swamiji, go ahead, What is the service you expect me to do now?

Periva said, Please go around 10 maternity centres within Kancheepuram and collect the data of children born within the last 2 days - Child's gender, health condition, parents name, status, educational qualification, time of birth.

The man said - Fine, this is nothing, - immediately rushed in his car like Lord Muruga goes in Thiruvilayadal and within a day he was back in the matam with exact statistics in front of Mahaperiva. He went through the statistics, about 15 children were born in 10 hospitals, 8 female and 7 male infants, out of which 3 children had malnutrition defects, 2 children were the first child of highly rich parents born in luxury hospitals, while 4 were children of coolie labourers who already had few children.

Maha Periva now looked at the gentleman and started asking few questions:

Do you think any of these children have been honest / dishonest within 2 days of their birth? Probably they could not even recognize their own mother. So, they have neither earned papa or punya in this birth.

According to your concepts, all these children should be living exactly identical to each other, but not so practically, some are ill, some are healthy, some are born to rich parents, some are born to poor parents. Remember all children born in the same day, same longitude, latitude, you can't blame their horoscope which is going to be almost identical.

The gentleman was dumbfounded!

It is here the concept of previous birth erupts! All these children have taken their present birth according to their deeds (karma) and the resultant papa, punya which they have assimilated in their previous births.

Sanatana Dharma was smiling at the gentleman through Maha Periva.

Dasopadesam" (Courtesy Chandra Subramaniam at FB ..sage of kanchi )

"The Ten Commandments" Paramacharya Maha Swamigal JagadGuru Shri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati

One of our duties as human beings is to avail ourselves of every opportunity to do good to others. The poor can serve others by their loyal work to the country and the rich by their wealth to help the poor. Those who are influential can use t
heir influence to better the condition of the lowly. That way we can keep alive in our hearts a sense of social service
Man by himself cannot create even a blade of grass. We will be guilty of gross ingratitude if we do not offer first to God what we eat or wear - only the best and choicest should be offered to Him.
Life without love is a waste. Everyone should cultivate "Prema" or love towards all human beings, bird and beast.
Wealth amassed by a person whose heart is closed to charity, is generally dissipated by the inheritors: but the family of philanthropists will always be blessed with happiness.
A person who has done a meritorious deed will lose the resulting merit if he listens to the praise of others or himself boasts of his deeds.
It will do not good to grieve over what has happened. If we learn to discriminate between good and evil, that will guard us from falling into the evil again.
We should utilise to good purpose, the days of our life-time. We should engage ourselves in acts which will contribute to the welfare of others rather than to our selfish desires.
We should perform duties that have been prescribed for our daily life and also be filled with devotion to God.
One attains one's goal by performance of one's duties.
Jnana is the only solvent of our troubles and sufferings.

This story dates back to the year 1933, when MAHA PERIYAVAA was in Varanasi.
PERIYAVAA was received in the palace of the KASSI KING.
Many important personalities and learned men (Pundits) were also present.

The Pundits mind there was an element of jealousy.
How can he PERIYAVAA have the title of JAGATGURU.(जगत् गुरु).

One of the Pundits thundered, WHO IS THIS JAGAT GURU
PERIYAVAA politely replied I am
The Pundit then remarked sarcastically So you are the JAGAT GURU

PERIYAVAA replied.
When i say I am JAGATGURU, i DONT mean to say, I am THE GURU of this JAGAT.
All living beings in this world ARE MY GURUS.

The Pundits were completely taken aback by this simple yet great explanation.
PERIYAVAA did not stop with that.

In that hall where this debate was going on there were some nests built by sparrows.
PERIYAVAA pointed to one of them and asked the PUNDITS

WHAT IS THIS?

The Pundit replied:
NEST

PERIYAVAA asked:
BY WHOM WAS THIS BUILT?

The Pundit Replied:
BY THE SPARROW.

PERIYAVAA continued:
This nest is built by birds which do not hands or legs.
We have hands and legs.
Yet we are unable to build a nest like the sparrow.
The sparrow has KRIYA SHAKTI (क्रिया शक्ति)
But i do not have that SHAKTI.
Hence this sparrow is my GURU!!!

Sangeetha Sankarar Kanji Maha Periyar...

Very Interesting articles...

God in Human Form – in three parts by Dr Subramanian Swamy...

About Indira Ghandhi..."On her own, she had vowed to him and had said that if she came back to power, she will not repeat the mistakes of the past of declaring an Emergency. Then she asked for his blessings, which the Parmacharya had given by raising his hand and showing his palm."
About soviet union Sage has told that "in some years to come the Soviet Union will not be there at all." 16 years earlier to what had happened in 1991..
And many more..

Every one knows that Smt., MSs rendered this composition of Mahaperiva at UN...

Maithreem Bhajatha ..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wg6S1DoQA6A

What we are not aware isthat "for some people, the song "Maithreem Bhajatha", fueled their hatred towards Mahaperiava and the hatred burnt with fury.
I didn't know, initially ,that such people existed, and that the song drew such a hateful response from them."
The gist of the letter received by Maha Periva on this song "" There was no need for Mahaperiava to make a place for Himself in the international organization, by showing Himself as a world Preacher through a musician" ------

This is the central point of that letter.

Shri RA Ganapathi narrates this in his book 'Maithreem Bhajatha'
