The vocal support was by Sri Shantaprakash - another disciple of Vidwan Sri T.N Seshagopalan

My thoughts on this concert..

It was one of the best concerts that I have attended in the Detroit area in recent times! As advertised, it was a thematic concert - a shivagAnanjali - dedicated to the reigning deity at Flint - Paschima Kasi Viswanathar. Several compositions in the concert list were audience requests.

Vidwan Sri T.N Seshagopalan's ABSOLUTE COMMAND AND MASTERY over the grammar of carnatic music was AWE INSPIRING. The concert was 3 hours and 50 minutes to be exact and was a display of sheer VIRTUOSITY! His manodharmam was in FULL FLOW and kept coming like a PRAVAAHAM!

My personal favorites were the Varali, Kambhoji, Kumudakriya and Kedaram renditions and last but not the least the Virutham. The (~20 odd ragas) - I could decipher only around 15 of them were - Kedaragowla, Ranjani, Saveri, Hindolam, Hamsanandhi, Atana, Brindavana Saaranga, Kuntalavarali, Begada, Neelambari, Bowli?, Kapi, Shankarabharanam, Surutti and Darbari Kaanada. The transitions between the raagams was EFFORTLESSLY EXECUTED and MIND BOGGLING. After rendering all the raagams in the Ramalinga Arutpa Viruttham, he traversed the raagams in reverse order once and then again in forward order within a very short span of time. This was SIMPLY SUPERB.

WHAT AN EXCELLENT CONCERT!! :D :D

How he recollects all that he rendered and traces back and then quickly moves in forward order .I have heard few of those , it is indeed a great testimony for his vidwat and razor sharp memory.

Good to hear of another great TNS performance.
I've heard Sanjay sing "appA nAn" by ramalinga adigaLAr in PurvikalyANi. Would love to hear what the sahAnA version sounds like...

The Mangalam Ganapati song is in malayamAruta. Muttiah Bhagavatar's song list does not have any song with these staring words. TNS has sung this song in kalyANi. It may be a different song altogether. I will try to find out. In the meantime here are the lyrics of the Mangalam Ganapati song. Someone who attended the concert may be able to recognize some words and confirm.

muruganukkoru cIDan. rAgA: malayamAruta. Adi tALA.

P: muruganukkoru cIDan nItAn ayyA mUla mantram arinda mukkaNNanE

In the madhyamakAla passage, it should be 'tuLangiDum azhagA..'

dvmk: My apologies. I did confirm from TNS that it is indeed a composition of Muttiah Bhagavatar. Somehow I had missed it from his Tamil compositions booklet. Here are the lyrics:

muruganukkoru. rAgA: kalyANi. Adi tALA.

P: muruganukkoru shIDan avan mukkNNan veNkADan
A: viruttan veNNiravaNivAn karittOrkkalaiyAn sarpamElaNindu jAti keTTalaivAn
C: pittan elumbaNiyum pEyANDi shUlipirai mazhuvEndum perum udai kAli

Was this a trio concert or was it TNS supported by the others? Did the others sing alapana/swaram?

It was predominantly TNS supported by others. IIRC, for one of the krithis, I think the Kambhoji piece, TNS sang one swaram, followed by Madurai Sundar and then by Muthukumar. This went on for quite some until TNS took over for the final round of swarams. I thought I heard Shantaprakash sing parts of the Varali alapana. I am unable to recollect support on other swarams or alapana - there might have been more instances.

Hearing this more than 6 years later, and this viruttam rendition is still quite something!

Ravi,
tu'l'angiDum துலங்கிடும் is more like it. viLangiDum is another possibility.

What a concert! Fortunate are those who heard it live.
