Quiz on CM in a lighter vein
This thread is along the lines of thread 'Quiz on Ragas in a lighter vein' that had a good run at http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic ... 05#p300705
-Keep it clean
-If you get offended with humor of this sort, better stay away.
To get started:
What song did Thyagaraja sing when he saw someone with his 'puruvam' shaved?

Exclamation in kApi nArAyaNi in response:
pArammA, Sambuvin rEzor seida vE...lai!
Apologies for jumping on to this fun-spinning carousel at my age (age no bar, I hope) to those who raise their eyebrows. One's devotion to T's compositions doesn't diminish an iota with this kind of childlike fun, I believe...

enta vAralu-aina kAni kAma
cinta-AkrAntulu-ainAru (enta)
No matter (aina kAni) how great (enta) people (vAralu) (vAralaina) are, they became (ainAru) besieged (AkrAntulu) by thoughts (cinta) (cintAkrAntulainAru) of lust (kAma).
How charming and how elegant is He! Whoever is capable of describing!

Re: Quiz on CM in a lighter vein
Well, my answer was 'brOva bAramA' ( why did you shave the brow, was that a burden/heavy )
I got the idea for this kaDi as I was passing through a 'Brow Spa', an Indian ladies run place that does eye brow work.
Well, I then looked up, Bru of Sanskrit and Brow are cognates. And 'Puruvam' comes from Sankrit Bru.
Many facial and related parts have a preponderence of such cognates. nAsi/Nose, Danta/Dental, , Bru/Brow
What started as silly humor turned out to be a bit of a learning opportunity.

Try this one!
I had made it up during the brexit frenzy.
Just as brexit, the answer had to do with the history of Carnatic music!

The nottuswarams were composed by Muthuswamy Dikshitar to assist his brother Baluswamy in his practice on the violin. The first ever Carnatic music compositions for the European instrument!

Re: Quiz on CM in a lighter vein
So let's have the next puzzle.
These quizzes are the result of two Quiz Weeks we have had in our WhatsApp group exclusively devoted to Carnatic music (+ some Hindustani music)
Here goes:
So many red herrings for a non-Telugu:
A ragam (not this one),
A day,
The master-lord? (Misheard, probably)
Quick, find the krithi!
(Alone or working together)
The last two lines point to the ragam, albeit in a silly transliteration.
The first four lines, to a famous krithi. In fact, they refer to the first three words of the pallavi.

Combining first of 1 & second of 2 - Ghost and bull would make - beGada -> peye kada (Tamil)!! But Ghost and ball not striking yet.

Not correct And by the way it's Ghost sings at a ball and not bull. Word bull is in the next puzzle which you have already solved.shankarank wrote:Combining first of 1 & second of 2 - Ghost and bull would make - beGada -> peye kada (Tamil)!! But Ghost and ball not striking yet.

manohari comes close to stealing the heart.. though that means stealing the mind. Of all manoharis not sure which one will fit the blue bird.

You are on the right track and very close.shankarank wrote:manohari comes close to stealing the heart.. though that means stealing the mind. Of all manoharis not sure which one will fit the blue bird.
I think from carnatic music context budhdhi means mind and manam or mano is heart. Maname - is heart - manadai - also heart, Manase - heart again - are all used in tamil film songs and at times in krithis also.

Sukumar and Ananth,
You both got them. You got stone elephant (kalyANi), Ananth
PB would have got my first set of clues for varALi. Then I changed them. Fight and lion (ALi, a rarely heard word in our everyday tamizh).
The clue words are--'give up or take on sounds somewhat close to the exact words! Here are two more:
Stone, suffering.
Way, bhArat, wail.
