It is a Janya Raga, derived from Dhira Shankharabharanam, 29th on the Melakarta scale.

Translation :

Lord Murugan's (Muruganin) other (maru) name (peyar) is 'beauty' (azhagu)!
That (his) smile is (anda muruvalil) enchanting (mayangudu) the whole world (ulagu)

Pallavi: Another name for Murugan is “beauty”. In that smile of hils the whole world gets enchanted.

For coolness (kuLUmaikku) he is (avan oru) the moon (nilavu)!
(Nee- you) Practice (pazhagu) saying (ena solli) Kumara (name of Murugan)

Anupallavi: He is like the moon for coolness. Oh mind utter the name “KumarA” always. Can be inetrpreted as a Nayika as well as a bhaktar.

Vedas (vedangal) mention this (kuridum) divine light (oliye)!
With the best of spears (uyar vElODu) he plays (vilaiyadum) gracefully (ezhilE)!
(You are/he is) All other ascetics (turaviyum) favourite (virumbiya/virumbidum) ascetic (turave)
