I have heard only once Dr Baby Sreeram in academy 2013 where i heard a part of her concert. Then few years back when her elderly sishya sibling of TMT , Raji Gopalakrishnan sang in academy where she sang a 4 raga RTP she was there in the audience. I asked Baby that day when Raji sang the 4 raga rtp ,is the fourth ragam of 4 ragam RTP valaci. She said it is not valaci but some thing else that she did not know. I came and wrote the review where i said valaci then late MKRamasubramanian sir was contacted by Raji , she had told the ragam was mahati and not valaci. Why this long story simply because there are always minor touch points of every vidushi and vidwan i absorb. I have seen vidushi Baby Sreeram in many concerts sitting as an intent rasika, her quick viewpoint telling it is not valaci but she sang some scale in her head and said it is not valaci are all brownie points and most importantly she attending a morning concert to support one of my favourite vidushi Raji Gopalakrishnan all matters to me to attend her much later 9 year delayed concert of hers in musiri chamber .

I was wondering for so many years or may be even few decades what is this musiri chamber . Some days i wanted to attend, they advertise and say it starts at 04:01 pm . Off i went to musiri chamber 2 mins before 4:01pm , hooray thanks to meticulous patronage of musiri family,every thing was in place with right lights ,sound , microphone and monitor check, at 04:01 Baby boomed with her booming madhyamakala anchored voice.DwijAvanthi alapana is 401K ragam . Starting with dwijavanthi alapana ,my mind raced at that time may be like her paramaguru Semmangudi she may take chetashri as a starter as semmangudi has began with weighty krithis like dakshinamoorthE. But it was a fanta fabulous varnam with cute swaras . It was a flyer start . Vidushi continued with paras .This shyama sastri triloka mAtaananu has inside me two acclimitized flavours one is by one and only side A maharajapuram santhanam and other by one and Only side B TRS. I was thinking will she go and give a brilliant swaras like TRS she settled bit leisurely in santhanam way.

Some ragas like kalyani are easy to take difficult to impress ragas. Some ragas like bEgadA are both difficult to take and impress. She did very well, her confidence in begada is to always internally search distinct prayogas . In her interest of distinct prayogas she does not create any wastage prayogas , bEgada alapana and swaras were tucked by a rare pudukOdE krishnamurthy krithi. Certainly a nice sanskrit kriti that can give a run for money for sankari neeve

Post Begada she decided to go for more open throated full toss sangathis .What other raga that can take you in that fulltoss route. It was a nice hamsanandi her voice was very very Raji Gopalakrishnish all the way for most of the concert . She said she had retuned the original arabi krithi of Neelakanta sivan into Hamsanandi , to that extent she also has committed blasphemy of tampering with original tune , buy hey even ariyakudi did that in Yaaro ivar Yaaro from saveri to bhairavi. In hamsanandi for a brief time i noticed her weakness of not going bit away from madhyama to duritha kalam especially in anupallavi was not that aesthetic . Sarasaangi filler was well done with a lot of criss cross sarasangi suzhattal especially in the last line murArE

Todi is again a difficult raga to sing and to impress. She indeed did very well. quite a lot of madhyamakala nayana pidi. I am not too acclimitized to TMT as a vocalist but i could spot a lot of nayana pidi of say Semmangudi like krishnam bhaja . Emi Jesithe krithi nerval and swaras were measured but prayogams were super intense in carnatic idioms. Todi reigned as a queen of Carnatic ragas in musiri chamber.


The best of best indeed was all the unsagging thukkadas , it was all perisu NO sirisu thukkadas.What a lovely thayumanavar viruththam for 16 mins where each of the 4 ragas from storm Bodhi ,steaming hot coffee , Ranjani and unending flowing ,,,,,,
She learnt this virththam from the specialist sethalapathi Balu mama ,indeed sethalapathi baby was born right there with this extraordinary viruththam. The joy of every line where i and my next seated rasika who is young upcoming Aravind Soundararajan thinking is that on muruga or shiva then few advaitic lines and then some great thamizh lines like pOi varthai sollinum was that in ranjani just flowed with aesthetics . From kamas she jumped with teruvedeppO to do a fullshop , i was in such joy as though i was hearing the first time i heard the song brochevarevarurA in the film shankarabharanam. Unending thukkada ecstasy continued unabated with unadulterated classicism . The joy of MDR composition in adukullla ethana calmbOdhi , i am a sucker of ykk ragam what a joy to hear this lovely composition of ONE , i mean it this time- really ONE and ONLY MDR. She said this year is a centenary of TMT , MDR and KVN and she sang the kvn popularized ALiveni , tears only tears as i heard her pleasing kurinji malayalam padam.

She was bit interacative , i took a chance to ask her two compositions.I recollected what IIRC sureshvv put here in the forum . I asked her to sing her composition in a ragam which i said charukesi minus , i forgot the name of ragam.She said the ragam is charukuntalam bit major chaya of charukesi and i could hear a bit of varamu/hindolam. Composition is too good lot of names of lord muruga and the tune is also very impressive . The charuKuntalam came in between MDR and KVN popularized , was that mishra chapu in a 3 in a row. The other one i asked is her tillana in bindumAlini, i would not say that was as impressive as charuKuntalam but a slight dip in quality when compared to other tukkadas , all said this was extraordinary post main section .

Few words about Raghul and Bharadwaj

Raghul is sharp musician , whatever sangathi be it an easy prayogam like say kurinji or a difficult todi or a first time possibly he also may be hearing charukuntalam he tags so closely as a shadow to the vocalist. I purposely sat in a vintage postition opposite his fingering board ,his play in todi was excellent and his best of best was the role he played in taayumanavar krithi , how does he give a jeeva pidi of ranjani when baby just faintly starts her 3rd segment , it was marked with utmost sampradaya sincerity. I have to confess some times i enjoy mrudangam only accompaniment ,because tani is reduced and there is even ness of sound with no overbanging or heterogeneous sound at all. His mishra chapu markings in the three tukkadas and the early Begada was very rich in aesthetics . IN tani he moved from an avatar of his present guru UKS to a bit more like his earlier paramaguru karaikudi mani. Nice right left balance with mrudu touches made my day


Special shout out for Musiri Family

THeir hospitality was as therepeutic like say Kanulaara sevinchi in the krithi enta ninne in mukhari. They also served early dinner , with piDi kozhakattai and curd rice with some two exotic vegetable side dishes bit resembled charukuntalam and todi (one i know and one i dont know) . Thank you musiri family , i have seen so many times in The Hindu one or two occassions i had to miss , once i missed where around 3pm i took a nap ,all said your 04 01 pm start is as sharp as adutthu vandu ennai thallal agaaadhu of your thatha musiri . Thank You.Hope to soon hear 2nd concert in your chambers

Conclusively
==============
All said , vidushi Baby Sreeram has distinct distilled prayogas , madhyamakaala is her forte , very very creative with her own tillana, varnam and an extraordinary her own krithi in a ragam possibly she only discovered .She was a Tune smith with her guru TMT in an unending kamas where she said she tuned one part of it , and she also did a blasphemous hamasanandi takeover of arabi in another Neelakanta sivan krithi .

Allegiance to fellow vaggeyakkara gurus like a rare pudukode krishnamurthy in a tough begada and a nAyana Pidi todi keeping the sadguru thyagaraja intact without any Jaya TVish margazhi utsavam adulteration.

Spacing of no farce pharaz and sarasangi. Above all of that thayumanavar in a detailed viruththam that will even make santhanam and kvn happy from a unknown distance.A touch of extreme obesiance with kvn and mdr also addding the same MDR growl . Creativity in imbibing the past and more importantly disctinctly jettisoning and lifting with her own musical self generated vidwat and emote filled prayogams in every part of the concert .

Well done Vidushi Baby Sreeram, i wish her more luck to have more opportunity then one or two that she has . Let me give a try for her morning 18th December Academy slot , may be she may sing that day a 4 raga RTP like vidushi Raji and i may see her senior sibling Raji Gopalakrishnan in the crowd and let me see if she knows your fourth raga that day.

Overall an excellent to outstanding concert for 2 hours and 35 mins.

It was a wonderful concert. The tODi was very beautiful.
however, what stole the show was the rAgamAlikA viruttam.
