Hi All....
As if listening to a haunting rendition by KVN & trying get more grasp on this raga was not fascinating enough....I learned today that Shyama Shastri is said to be the only composer to compose in this raga....???
There are many tricky yet magical phrases that have been brought out in the many renditions of SS's Devi Brova by artistes past & present.....
I would love to know more about the indept handling of this raga....& if the above is true, why was it so rare ???
Your contributions will be greatly appreciated.
Regards

While Shyama Shastri was the first one to compose a kriti in this raga, his is not the only composition. Here are the others:
Anni nivanuchu- -Sriramachandra Murti Sistla
Are re kodandarama (lng)-Triputa-Govindacharya

I would classify Chintamani as a raga sounding like Shanmughapriya in S-P range and Bhairavi in the P-S' range.
Some characteristic phrases include SSP - PDN,S' - DPMR,GSR. The RGSR phrase is very common.
Sowmya had sung Devi Brova (Chintamani) as a main piece (with ragam and swaram) in her 1999 Music Academy concert back. I think it may still be available online at http://www.eshakti.com/academy.asp (site registration required)

Re: Chintamani
Why isn't Chintamani considered a janya of Hemavathi (58)?

Re: Chintamani
Because janya ragas with ambiguous murchanas are assigned to the melakarta with the lowest cardinal number (in this case, Shanmukhapriya, which is Melakarta 56).
Though, by the same logic, Gambheera Nattai should be classified under Mayamalavagoula instead of Chalanattai as it usually is...
Hmm...

Re: Chintamani
My logic is , chintamani is prati madhyama bhairavi , hence under shanmukhapriya , since natabhairavi is melakarta for bhairavi ,melam72 wrote: ↑04 Apr 2017, 20:18Because janya ragas with ambiguous murchanas are assigned to the melakarta with the lowest cardinal number (in this case, Shanmukhapriya, which is Melakarta 56).

I listened to Ravikiran's concert at Musiri House a few days ago and paid attention to this ragam for the first time though I've heard the song Devi Brova many times before. It appears that Ratanabhinav is right.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?t=5688s&v=s2hxS4es9lc
The alapana starts around 52:00 and the song around 1:04:45.
There is use of d1 in all descending phrases, while ascending phrases use d2, as in bhairavi.. All the notes including the d(1,2) resemble bhairavi except that the madhyamam is pratmadhyama. The logic appears to be this: if Bhairavi is a janya of Natabhairavi, the pratmadhyama version of Bhairavi should be classified under the pratmadhyama of Natabhairavi, which is Shanmukhapriya.

In fact it was Syama Sastri who invented this ragam.

I have heard from the descendents of Syama Sastri that this krithi was sung only with suddha madhyamam.

Since this video has been up on YouTube for a decade, let me just go ahead and share it - yes, it is none other than MS Amma.
https://youtu.be/hphWhnJiE-E
Look at that involvement - to sing like that at 80.
You can get the original Carnegie Hall recording here at Hungama
https://www.hungama.com/song/lyrics/aye-khuda/2002813/
And you can also make do with this track: https://youtu.be/JeKxS6gRNPY
This rAgA as we know it today is like a prati madhyama bhairavi. But I have read that Smt. Vidya Shankar had learnt this song from a descendant of Syama Sastri with a lot of zig zag phrases.
Can anyone share any compositions of modern composers or manodharma in this rAgA? Actually it's a bit surprising why a rAgA like this doesn't get more time - it should, like bhairavi, have a lot of scope.
