Thanks
I listened to the song and thought it had shades of Yamunaa Kalyani but since I am least familiar with HM ragas I do defer to Lakshman's expert judgement. I also found that he is almost right after listening to

I wonder whether coolkarni could pass a final verdict

I am not able to listen to the song on Musicindiaonline.
i keep getting error messages.
Not that it woul have helped.I am so hopelessly stuck between various ragas and systems.
But i Have some evidence here to base your verdicts on ..
ALL THESE ARE THREE MINUTE CLIPS.
Kamod as sung by DV paluskar-such a tragedy he died at 36
http://rapidshare.de/files/2454390/DV_p ... d.mp3.html
next as sung by Narayanrao vyas (disciple of Paluskar senior -Vishnu Digambar).Vishnu Digambar Paluskar left a very young DVP in charge of Naraynrao before dying. His story of spreading HM in North India-from Lahore to Bihar is a fascinating one ! was a strong believer that HM had to ride piggy back on devotional music if it had to survive and spread among the masses.

then the one by Narayanrao's son Vidyadhar Vyas.

a lec-dem type of track by sura guha
http://rapidshare.de/files/2454556/Subr ... d.mp3.html
and lastly and echo from a distant past
http://rapidshare.de/files/2454521/Gang ... d.mp3.html
Gangubai in one of her interview admits that for the first batch of discs she cut ,she was not paid anything. The recording chap used to come to india from London once a year and would stay for 2 months at a stretch.AND ALL THESE STALWARTS WOULD BE WAITING IN A GROUP WAITING FOR DATES , IN BOMBAY.THEY WOULD HAVE GIVEN MONEY , IF NECESSARY, TO SEE THEIR VOICES ON DISCS.such was the attraction of being recorded.
puts all the present talk of copyrights etc in a different perspective.
and since i am eternally confused between shyam kalyan and kamod , i see no reason why the rest of you should be spared.
here is a gem of a bhajan from MSG -barse badariya.
http://rapidshare.de/files/2454911/msg- ... n.mp3.html
I AM STILL IN SEARCH OF A 50 MINUTE RENDERING OF MSG -FEATURING SHYAM KALYAN- AT SASTRI HALL-CHENNAI- IN 1987 OR 88
strangely this is my entire stock of Kamod.
More strangely, except for subra guha , all the rest come from the same school....

Lakshmanji,
many Thanks.
i was confused.had to call in my expert friends.
they added to the confusion by saying that there is a hint of maanjh khamaj as well(apart from hameer and sarang)
after listening to venkateshklumars rendering in shyam kalyan, we concluded that it is closest to shyam kalyan
here is 4 minute drut composition
http://rapidshare.de/files/2466084/Venk ... 2.mp3.html
and an extract from the vilambith portion where he sings swaras

must admit that Bombay jaisree has not sung a pure raga here. This is one of the problems in identifying ragas in bhajans .Gets worse when people sing ghazals.
Maybe I can try and ask her directly, since I see her often, when I go to pick up my son from school !
so if you have to give only one name , the closest would be Shyam Kalyan, i guess.
CML... the next time you put me up as the third umpire, i hope it is one of the yaman, malkauns, darbari varieties..

What I really meant to say was that there are rAgAs like pIlU, shivranjani, mAND, khamAj etc that have set ArOha/avarOha but when you add in notes that normally do not occur in the rAgA, then they become mishra. It is something similar to bhAShanga rAgA in CM, though in a bhASAnga rAgA the number of additional notes are limited I think. I have heard HM renderings where several rAgAs brought in with pIlU or khamAj or mAND and so they become mishra rAgAs. Hope it is a little clear.

The glossary
http://www.santoor.com/glossary.html
defines mishra as:
MISHRA: Mixed. When a raga is mixed with another or more of other ragas it is called a Mishra raga.
whereas a bhashanga raga in CM is where 'anya' swaras (alien to the melakarta) are introduced. Hence I believe mishra is much stronger than being a bhashanga raga. I even wonder whether it is even permitted in CM whereas HM freely admit them. I do seek some clarifications from the CM perspective.

Dear All,
I have learnt this song "Gopala gokula vallabhi". There are few corrections in the lyrics, atleast according to what I have learnt!
I have it from a very good source (sishya of Dr. BMK) , whom I have learnt it from, that this song has been tuned by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna based on the Hindustani raga Shyam Kalyan (or Chaaya naat). Whether they are similar, I dont know as I dont have much knowledge of Hindustani Ragas. Although I can get clarification for this.
Also, since there is no equivalent raga in Carnatic music, Dr. BMK has named it as "Vallabhi" ragam, a word which appears in the first line of the song.
It is a very beautiful song indeed! And he has tuned it so beautifully!
Regards,
Ramya.

shyamakalyANi and vallabhi are different rAgAs. Here are the scales:
shyAmakalyANi (mELA 65)-SRGMPNS/SNPDPMGRS (Nadamuni Panditar)
vallabhi (mELA 29)-SRGMPDNS/SNDNDPMPGMRS (BMK)
There is another shyAmakalyANi under mELA 12: SRGMPDNS/SNPDPMGRS (Nadamuni Panditar)

From what I know, CM tries to retain the purity of its ragams by not permitting extraneous notes. Even in bhashanga ragams (like Kambhoji), the prayoga of the Anya swaram is strictly delineated, and many such Bhashanga Raagams may be rendered without even including phrases that include the Anya Swaram, but with no loss to the raga bhavam.
Hindusthani music, with its plethora of misra ragams, leaves even its artists wondering at times. You are then forced to not attempt to hang every Alaap on a Raga peg, but enjoy it for its musical worth and scope.
