Light-hearted puzzles like this one are a weak substitute, I must admit.
;)
- Am willing to revive this quiz, if there are any takers. I can post a link to round 1 questions (as early as Friday ) :)

Vidya - please revive it. Even short quizzes (say 5 questions) would be good since at times people are quite busy and won't be able to participate in a particular quiz. The following week they may have time to participate in the next quiz.

I am happy to provide some carnatic music trivia questions as well.

Mohan,
Here is a link to CMQuiz 1.0

Correct answers will be displayed once you click Submit so no issues with time or participation etc. Quiz takers get to pat themselves in the back or award themsleves the Rasika Ratnakara for all correct (or even some incorrect) entries ;) pls add your questions too or point out any inconsistencies in this set. (Mods move this to a new Quiz/Trivia thread or wherever else it makes sense(if at all it does)

Nice quiz Vidya - AFAIK, the first question does not have a unique answer.

Vidya: Nice and tough set of questions. I got a few right and got to learn quite a bit. Though I did not get the audio questions, they are great questions and of course good music to listen to. I got the answer to question no 5 right by patiently going through the music academy web site. (In that process, noticed the mention of Master T.R. Mahalingam (Flute ) for his first concert at the academy. Those are the nice side benefits of taking up quizzes such as yours).

Without giving away too much....

1. The mudra answer does not appear in Viribhoni, right? Are there recordings available of other compositions of Pacchimiriyam Adippaiah?

2. May I please be awarded atleast half a point for my 'anudhrutha' answer for question 9. ;)

Thanks for the quiz.

I too got few right. one among them is violinist in audio clip. The ragas in the clip- I was damn close to all of them. Now, how often do we hear these ragas in concerts?

May be we need an answer thread to discuss.

This may be an easier quiz. What is the rAgA and song in this clip?

‘Karagarapriya’ represented by K. Bhuvaneswari, S. Sivasri, S. Veeramani and R. Swetha won the contest.
Wonder if all the members of this team were afflicted with a hoarse voice? :P

Lakshman sir,

Is it Ramapriya? I dont know the song. I guess Mysore Nagaraj and Manjunath played it at Ramasevamandali.

ramakriya,
- Q1 has 3 answers I believe.Any more? So does Q3. As for audio I had planned to include a clip of Ganapathi and Sarvashri and decided against it
precisely because that might be a no-brainer for you ;)

vasanthakokilam
- No the mudra doesn't appear in Viribhoni. It is mentioned in the Vaggeyakara Caritram. It says he has composed many compositions. Whatever happened to those compositions no one knows.
-Did not mean to make this an exercise in obscurantism but as you pointed out and any quiz buff would know, seemingly useless trivia typically lead us towards exploring something else.

The person mentioned in the article, has been doing this and other music appreciation programs for over 15 years in Trichy and is quite a pioneer at this.

It is the Navagraha krithi in Ramamanohari (Ramapriya) - SmarAmyaham SadA RAhum.
This krithi along with mahAsuram kEtumaham in chAmaram are disupted krithis of Muthuswamy Dikshitar.

Lyrics available at http://guruguha.wikispaces.com/Smaramyaham+

Good quiz vidya. I bombed on most of them - although I should have gotten the melakarta one. Got the swaras - looked up the wrong raga :)

Now I know the answer for the first raga, I remember hearing Dr. SR's rendition :). I actually got the pUrvanga part of arohana (and the mela) - which itself is a strong clue, but the raga list I consulted did not have this raga! It had one other one that was close, but I knew it definitely not this!
