Ravi and K'ji: Thanks! The hardest part is to listen carefully and write stuff down (a la Bharat who does such a wonderful job with his reports on lec-dems and concerts) when I find myself getting carried away by the music. Can't wait to get home and listen to Gauhar Jan - muchos gracias K'ji. I managed to listen to Pt. Chhanulaal Misra, Pt. Jagdish Prasad, Smt. Shanti Hiranand, Smt. Girija Devi, Smt. Rita Ganguli, and Mashkoor Ali - great music to savour!! Wish you guys were here.

Nandakumarji, Bahut Khoob! Wajid Ali Shah's is a fascinating story indeed. It was, IIRC, the theme of Satyajit Ray's only Hindi film - Shatranj ke Khiladi. I believe his palce (or whetever) in Metiaabruz is still pretty much as it was during his confinement. Made myself a small note to pay a visit next time I am in the city...

Nand
Your writing is highly educational as it is entertaining. We are getting the essence of HM with History and names connected and with coolkarni feeding timely snippets it is indeed an enlightening experience. It is not simply listening to HM but understanding it meaningfully with the background is important. Thank you and give us more! And thanks Coolkarni!

the song babul mora is still one of the most beloved songs of mine, for it's sheer melody, saigal's voice, raag bhairavi etc. After knowing the line by line meaning, my eyes well up with copious tears. I have already narrated an often heard story. KLS was invited by a leading film producer to his house,at marine drive . After reaching the locality, KLS FORGOT THE FLAT NO ETC .He started singing babul mora without any inhibitions, The producer thrilled by his golden voice rushed out to receive him. gobilalitha

Thanks Nand/coolkarni
I did find Saigal's heart rendering Babul at

(courtesy of varmaji who is a fanatic fan of Saigal
What a powerful lyric? One must know the lyric with meaning to appreciate the 'cry of the heart'. Nand's subtle reference to funeral/marriage sets the scene for soulful Saigal's sensitive pathos!
I can understand the moisture in GBL's eyes! Whose will not ?

yes, Jagdish Prasad ji sang them all in khamaj for more than an hour and a quarter!
thumri-s sung by Ustad Abdul Karim Khan and his followers have been described as khayali thumri on account of their perceptible lack of eroticism and seriousness of approach bordering on the devotional. However the Kirana Thumri is different from the ‘purab’ style of the thumri, as it does not employ ‘laggi’ or doubling of the tempo, towars the end of the thumri. Purists therefore feel that the Kirana Thumri lacks lilt and emotive appeal as it lays relatively less emphasis on laya.

gobilalita ji: it was a pleasure meeting you after the concert. bhinnashadj and kaushikdhwani are both similar to hemant with minor differences in the way they are handled by gharaanedaar musicians. http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=PfSldL-9ARk

Our Javalis and Padams, are also in line with Thumris. Just as Thumris need a perspective of appreciation , our Javalis and Padams too need the same perspective.
Husn is bekar, today, as the definition of "husn" itself is re-written. In today's humdrum scenario, start shoot , fire approach is what is liked by many.
Even though music is supposed to relieve you of this humdrum, people are not patient, or don't want 'lamba chauda' portrayals.
'What is this life if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare' said .W>H>Davies in his poem.
Exactly, so. Most of us today don't have the patience or the time to appreciate the unfolding of a bhava, rasa and beauty and carry along and grow alongwith it.
Hence with changing taste patterns, many of these genres of music / art also die a slow death.
Could not hold on , as wanted to express quickly !!!

Pandit Mahadev Prasad Mishra was one of greatest exponent of the Benaras Thumri. He was highly respected by all artists of Benaras including Kishan Maharaj, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Siddheswari, Girija Devi and others. Dr.Smt . N.Rajam has learnt Thumri from him.
Even though his music was drenched in undiluted Benarasi Ang he added the beauty of uncanny rhythm which other thumri players did not do. He started as tablist, being a gurubhai to the famous Anokelal Mishra. His perception of laya was so perfect that Late Khanthe Maharaj would prefer only his lehara for his solo concerts. He was great techer of both table and Thumri. His rendering of "ab naa bajaao shyam"

Infact the folk element in the semi-classical tradition of Thumri is most evident in the sub-genre of Hori http://www.vidyashah-music.blogspot.com/ Some Hori Thumris by

Unfortunate though true is that fact that Thumri and Tappa singers from Gaya are often forgotten. Padmashri Gajendra Narayan Singh, who speaks at ITC-SRA events and who is the former Chairman of the Bihar Sangeet Natak Academy speaks about singers from Gaya. The current exponent of note from Gaya is Govardhan Mishra, whom Gajendra Narayan Singh rates as the finest living Tappa singer in the country. He is also a first rate Thumri exponent of the Gaya style which is a variant of Benares Bol Banao Thumri.
Unfortunately I do not have any of his recordings nor of his father guru Ram Prasad Mishra or Ramuji though I heard them many times when younger.

Nandagopal, Pt. Chhannulal Mishra is fantastic - he also gives performaces that can best be described as the north-Indian equivalent of 'iSai sorpozhivu'/harikatha...absolutely fabulous. His knowledge of both music and the SAstras is prodigious...reminds me of Sri TNS.

@ Ravi & Arasi: Glad you enjoyed Mishraji’s music - He is very affable indeed!
This past May, I had been to the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Music Festival in Banaras where his 8-9 yr old grandson simply wowed the audience with a dazzling display of kaidaa, rela and chakradhars on the tabla. The kid then turned round to ask his granddad for permission “ab main thumri ke liye bajaaoon?” Mishraji then instructed one of his students to sing the popular Khamaj thumri “Kaun gali gayo shyaam…” Potaa ne kamaal kiya – He has amazing talent! Hope to post a clip as and when it is available.
