Second line should have pirAn and not pirAan.

Last line should start onRumE tozha and not orRume tozha.

It was tuned in Sindhu Bhairavi by T.K.Rangachari ,I have heard Vairamangalam rendering it, used to be very touching, even without following the meaning completely.

arasi, "naDanda kAlgaL nondavO" sounds like a mixture of haLegannaDa and tamizh. Should it not be "nondanavO?" Is "nondavO" poetic licence or a recognised grammatical construction?

nondukoLLudal is to feel pain, in body or mind. Here the reference is to the pair SArangApANippErummAL's feet/legs

Yes I had missed karai. But "vilangu" is how it is given in the original. It could be due to combining- when kulungavO+ilangu are combined "V" gets added.

And I am aware of the meaning whence my question- should it not be nondanavo to be accurate grammatically?

I got it!
'nondavO' is a derivative form similar to 'nondanavO' or 'nondaduvO' as derived from the word 'nondal' meaning hurt!
'nOdal' is the abstract noun form of hurt or pain
'nonda' is the past participle ' was hurt'
'nondavO' is the derived imperative 'did it hurt?'
Similar import is 'nondanavO' (plural here relates to two legs) or
'nondaduvO' (singular?)

I'm wrote that off my head. I remember all the prabhanda gOSTi swAmis rendering it that way. Even Krishna sings it that way. The book I have has given it as ilangu. I will check up with the Bhakthi/Ramanuja Group Archives.

naDandavO?--either it is poetic license or, as in spoken tamizh, our habit of not using the plural for a pair of things (cheruppu engE? not cheruppugaL and thus--shoe engE?) perhaps goes back a long way!
'Your lifting, splitting the earth as a boar (Enam)--did it make you tired and it makes you shake?--that's why you are resting?' This is quite common with those who wield words--this process of relating to associative words sub-consciously. churam also means fever and he uses the word immediately.
pEsu+Azhi kEsanE!--speak, kEshan (kEshavan) who sports the wheel (Azhi) or the one who resides in the Azhi (sea).
Did he walk a desert or arid land (churam is also forest).

Since the second line speaks of jhUT (lies),
the third line should read satya vachan (words--true words--truth). Why have you given up truth?

1) is it dil lalchAkar?
2) khalasa??

This Bhajan by Sant.Khalas was also sung by MSS in many concerts and it is featured in her D.D. archives video.

Viruttams.........am surprised that there is no mention of Sethalapathi Sri Balasubramaniam, affectionately known as Balu Mama.
Being a tamizh teacher at Ramakrishna School, each one of his viruttams was a gem.
He was a direct disciple of Papanasam Sivan. His knowledge of tamizh will often get known by the elongation (Nedil in Tamil) and shortening (Kuril in Tamil) of the words used most appropriately without even the slightest loss of meaning. Many have confessed to have learnt and learnt to sing viruthams from this man, who unfortunately is not with us now. The same virutham would begin with say a karahrapriya, slide to Khamas or Saveri, glow elaborately to Harikhambhodi and sign off in style with a glorious Behag. More will come.........

On the Bhava and emotional content of Vrittams,iam reminded of an incident concerning MSS and the review that appeared nearly forty years before.MSS and TS a the behest of Kanchi Mahasvamigal had arranged a Shanmatha conference in late sixties.On the concluding day there was a concert by MS.She was so involved in her singing and everybody in the audience were so carried away that reviewers mentioned that "What the galaxy of Vidwans had lectured on dais had just been demonstrated as a svaanubhavam by the devotional outpourings of MSS. Mss always used to select appropriate vrittams from ancient classical texts

Great topic, i just love it... Please don't forget the great viruttams of MDR. He includes one viruttam, pretty elaborate in each of his concert!! Also the great DKP!!

I am planning to do a project on viruttams, collecting all viruttams - non-commercial ones.. I will do it soon, may be in a months time
