A joke:

One of the Tamil magazines had a cartoon-at the height of the hidden treasures controversy in the Padmanabhaswamy temple in Trivandrum a couple of years back:

Lord Venkateshwara is seen "bemoaning" to Lord Padmanabha Swami-- 'WHAT I HAVE STRENUOSLY ACCUMULATED FROM MY DEVOTEES OVER THE YEARS WHILE STANDING ALL THE TIME, WHEREAS YOU HAVE ACCUMULATED MORE BY MERELY LYING IN BED"!!!!!!

Lin Yutangs great chapter on Lying in bed in his book - Importance of living - should be a good resource for the Head Priest to consult
Before taking a call on this matter .
To quote
"It is amazing how few people are conscious of the importance of the art of lying in bed, although actually in my opinion nine-tenths of the world's most important discoveries, both scientific and philosophical, are come upon when the scientist or philosopher is curled up in bed at two or five o'clock in the morning.

Some people lie in the daytime and others lie at night. Now by "lying" I mean at the same time physical and moral lying, for the two happen to coincide. I find that those people who agree with me in believing in lying in bed as one of the greatest pleasures of life are the honest men, while those who do not believe in lying in bed are liars and actually lie a lot in the daytime, morally and physically. Those who lie in the daytime are the moral uplifters, kindergarten teachers and readers of Aesop's Fables, while those who frankly admit with me that a man ought to consciously cultivate the art of lying in bed are the honest men who perfer to read stories without a moral like Alice in Wonderland.

Now what is the significance of lying in bed, physically and spiritually? Physically, it means a retreat to oneself, shut up from the outside world, when one assumes the physical posture most conducive to rest and peace and contemplation. There is a certain proper and luxurious way of lying in bed. Confucius, that great artist of life, "never lay straight" in bed "like a corpse," but always curled up on one side. I believe one of the greatest pleasures of life is to curl up one's legs in bed. The posture of the arms is also very important, in order to reach the greatest degree of aesthetic pleasure and mental power. I believe the best posture is not lying flat on the bed, but being upholstered with big soft pillows at an angle of thirty degrees with either one arm or both arms placed behind the back of one's head. In this posture any poet can write immortal poetry, any philosopher can revolutionize human thought, and any scientist can make epoch-making discoveries."
Unquote

I myself would not like to be in the priests position .
Showering the Lord with flowers - best left where they were made and found - all day long .
Any way the trouble began When man made God in the image of himself . ;)

Nice to know about curling up in bed. I get comfort that way though not poetry, scientific insight or spiritual awakening.
Varsha's last line reminds me of Spinoza (the only thing by Spinoza I read): "I deny only gods fashioned by men in their own image, to be servants of their desires."

It is only appropriate that I acknowledge that it was not my line , but as you say , Spinozas
The line on flowers is similarly picked from Kuvempus ( KV Puttappas ) musings that has stayed with me .

Arasi, either way it may be appropriate! All gods are sthuthipriyas and in need of bhakthas. Otherwise I will not be reciting Vishnusahasranamam and Lalithasaharanamam!
Varsha, I did not for a moment suggest that the thought did not occur to you independently, that someone said it earlier does not make him a patent-holder for that thought. I just wanted to share compulsively what I read. You come up with beautiful thoughts expressed felicitously.

Listened to Sri Parthasarathi. When Smt. Radha sings in top octave and MS in the lower one, it is exhilarating. My mind went to comments about TS. In that phase the singing of Smt. Radha is powerful and arresting. I thought how much TS was partial to MS. It pains me when I read TS was a benevolent autocrat. I see that TS loved MS all the way and whatever he did sprang from that love. When we do not understand that love, we crib about superficialities.

in a belligerent mood . Outstanding concert that should be heard non stop . When the alapana for Todi starts , one gets a feeling that all that transpired till then was just for this moment . Such is the beauty of the carnatic concert format . Looseners ... throat clearers ... obeisance to Gods who need to help in removing obstacles ... fifteen / twently minute beauties to test the tracks , a slowdown with a slow classic and then the piece of the day . And the unwinding .... No Sir nothing wrong with this format . Good enough for another hundred years

Yeah. Have read it during my daily MS Search thing in google :) That particular article hosts a concert pic of MS @ Ramanavami Mandali.

Excerpt from http://ramanavami.org/retro.php

Mandali shifted to this venue in 1952, by strange coincidence Bharataratna M.S. Subbulakshmi’s first concert under the aegis of the Mandali was also in the same year. Mandali enjoys a very strong relationship with M.S. Subbulakshmi. She and her husband late Sri.T. Sadashivan, both showed immense love and affection towards the Mandali. Starting from the year 1952 till 1992 in a span of Forty-one years M.S. has performed on Thirtyone occassions in the Mandali’s Ramanavami Festivals. Mandali has been singularly fortunate in establishing such a glorious feat.

Each concert of M.S. at the Mandali had its own richness of the occasion, to be remembered and cherished for a long time. The most memorable day was, when in the year 1980 M.S’s concert at the Mandali was broadcast Live by AIR all over the South. Another interesting aspect of M.S’s concerts at the Mandali was ‘Rain’. It did rain on a number of occasions, but such was the sagacity of M.S and her husband T. Sadashivan the concerts used to go on smoothly till the end, and no such occassion arose when the concerts had to be cancelled or rescheduled. Every concert of M.S at the Mandali turned out to be a Grand success.

And this is the link, which came around a decade ago !!

I have a very personal connection with MS Subbulakshmi. Her Meera bhajans, or rather the soundtrack from the Hindi film, were my lullabies. So when my brother was born, I insisted he should be named Hari. My parents, who wanted to name him Krishna after our grandfather, tried explaining that Hari and Krishna were the same. But I wasn’t looking for a theology lesson here; I just liked the sound of the name Hari, as sung by MS amma. So Hari it had to be. Arguing with an irrational two-year-old is an exercise in futility. So my exhausted parents gave way and prefixed the Hari to the name of their choice.

The sequel to this was a meeting with the lady herself a couple of years later. As the family lore has it — embellished along the way no doubt — she had come to consult my grandfather, an Ayurvedic physician. I marched up to her, told her the story of how my brother got his name and finished by bursting into tears because she hadn’t sung any songs about my name. Her reaction, according to my very embarrassed parents, was to lift me into her lap and sing a couple of songs that did feature my name.

Million thanks varsha for the awesome video. That song is a composition of Atma, on Anjaneyar. Very fittingly, MS Amma rendered in the Anjaneyar temple and the video also is sensitively taken to depict the Anjaneyar idol at key junctures. Mridangam- Madirimangalam Swaminathan is shown only during thani. And Kadayanallur Venkatraman- the tune smith of MSS songs- see how he enjoys each and every phrase of MSS.He never takes his eyes off MS face and even his body language is in sync with MSS.

Another example of MSS sincerity and professionalism. This is a temple concert. Nobody expects a RTP. Even at this old age, MS sings a splendid and elaborate tanam before the kriti.

She is Latha Ramchar. Have looked at the list of accompanying artists in Swaralayam Puraskaram and it is the same person in anjaneyar koil and Swaralayam Puraskaram.

Varshaji,

Thanks for the video of MS at Nanganallur temple (post 994 above)
MS was grace personified.
Her appreciation of Sriramkumar and Latha Ramachar with a gentle smile was part of her gracious personality.

Please also upload the video of Sri.M.Balamuralikrishna in the same venue (Nanganallur Anjaneyar Temple)
held in the early 90s to the accompanyment of Sri.TN Krishnan, Sri.Umayalpuram K.Sivaraman and Sri.G.Harishankar,
if available.

Thanks and regards.
