Re: Just in time for Gowri & Ganapati festivals 2010
Chalukya king ruling from Badami (then called Vatapi), Pulikeshi II invaded Pallava kingdom. In retaliation, in 643 AD, Pallava king Mahendra Varma invaded the Chalukya kingdom and laid seize on the Chalukya capitaland defeated Pulikeshi. During that time, a general of Pallava army by name Parnjyoti (also known as Siruttondan) took away the Ganapati idol from the temple atop the fort in Vatapi, and installed it in his hometown of Tiruchchengattangudi
The above information is partially wrong. It was "Narasimha Varma Pallava"(also called as "Maamalla") who invaded vatapi and defeated ""Pulekesi" to take revenge of his father's defeat.
"Paranjothi" his general took this"ganesha"idol and installed in his native village.
"Paranjothi" later become saiva saint"siruthondar" and he is one among the 63 nayanmars(saiva saints)
All tamil readers are familiar of the historical novel"sivakamiyin sabatham" of "kalki"
The above incidents are part of the novel.
The famous "mamallapuram" near chennai was completed during the time of"Narasimha Varma" so it was called as "Mamallapuram""
