Yes, I shall be there, for at least part of the day.

If I don't share the "maddy" enthusiasm of you guys, then that is only because of my lack, so far, of experience and exposure. I do think, though, that when friends put such a vast amount of work into a project then we should support them.

Suryaprakash is one of my favorite artists anyway, and if his singing contains even an echo of MMI, then I can understand the maddiness :)

Dear Sri VKV, Sri Venugopalan and Sri VVS,
Madurai Mani Iyer is a phenomenon in Carnatic music as significant to my mind as Mozart was in Western Classical music, as Mallikarjun Mansur was in Hindustani music, as Dattreya Bendre was in Kannada literature. These great souls made a unique impact, emanating from the wellspring of a creative genius anchored in a deep spiritual inspiration. The result was an unforgettable impact of sweetness, goodness and refinement.

That you people, who are all excellent in your respective fields, have toiled so diligently to celebrate the birth centenary of this great man is a tribute as much to him as it is to the entire rasika community of Carnatic music.

Some of us will be lucky enough to be present at your grand celebration. But EVERYONE of Carnatic music aficionados will be present in their hearts and souls in your celebration. The celebration of MMI or MMI Maddies will not end on 28 Oct. Such things never end. Just as the juice of life will flow till eternity.

My best wishes and prayers for all your success.

I fully echo the sentiments of R Sachi. Nostalgic and great memories of listening to MMI 's thrilling Ramanavami concerts at Bangalore still continue to haunt my mind. I am far away from Chennai now and wish the MMI centenary function and the sustained efforts of the organisers all success.

]I am giving ADVANCE information about events involving the MMI CENTENARY and others I am involved in during my current visit to Chennai. We will soon provide more details about each of these happenings.EVERY ONE IS INVITED.My tel#S ARE: 24362834 TILL 9:30 A.M. CELL: 8754570310. In addition messages can be left at:24914103. As I have written before ideas & suggestions are ALWAYS WELCOME. VKV
REG THE 27TH MEETING DESCRIBED BELOW THE ACTING U.S. CONSUL HAS KINDLY AGREED TO JOIN THE PANEL ETC. PL ATTEND THIS SPECIAL EVENT IF YOU CAN. THANKS, V.K.Viswanathan
4) OCT 27: THIS EVENT is not related to the MMI CENTENARY. I am organising a function in which SRI.s: N.RAMANI, N.MURALI, RAVIKIRAN,& VKV, WILL TRACE THE PROGRESS & RISE OF CARNATIC MUSIC IN NORTH AMERICA SINCE 1960 & THE ROLE PLAYED BY CLEVELAND V.V.SUNDARAM IN THIS JOURNEY. The concert will be by: KUM AISHWARYA (Vocal) accompanied by Dr.Narmadha (Violin), Sri.T.K.Murthy & (MRIDANGAM). Aishwarya is the great grand daughter of M.S. & grand daughter of Radha(who has kindly agreed to attend) & the significance of this concert is it is trying to nostalgically recall the 1966 tour of M.S.S(with Radha & Vijaya)- V.VSubramanian(Violin), T.K.Murthy(Mridangam), "Vikku"Vinayakaram(Ghatam). It is the opinion of VKV at least that this whole miracle & wave started with that tour & M.S.S's UN CONCERT was the inspiration & start of this phenomenon. It will be in Raga Sudha Hall in Mylapore.
5)OCT 28: 2P.M.-10P.M. AT Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore. These Centenary Celebrations will be the continuation of the MMI Centenary Celebrations which started in CLEVELAND earlier this year in which close to fifteen concerts in part paid tribute to MMI. Actually the two artists who devoted their entire concerts to MMI-Smt. Gayathri Girish & Sri. Suraprakash will perform concerts in the evening segment.
6) OCT 29: Raga Sudha Hall. The R.K.Srikantan Trust & the GLOBAL RASIKAS FORUM OF THE CLEVELAND THYAGARAJA ARADHANA will present an exclusive concert of HaikesaNallur Muthiah Bhagavathar's Compositions.
The attempt has been to address & present the VARIOUS ASPECTS OF M.M.I. & HIS MUSIC. We are aware more could have been done but as ALL THE EFFORTS are VOLUNTEER based this is the best we could come up with.....Please attend as many of these FREE functions- in the same spirit as M.M.I. Himself- as possible. Thanks, VKV

VKV,
What a wonderful all day long celebration you have worked on, with the help of other enthusiasts!
While there are countless big time fans of MMI, you stand alone, at leastin our eyes, your friends at Rasikas. Your enthusiasm for the master's music is boundless.

Have a grand celebration!
Need I say I miss being there :(

Hope rasikAs fill the hall to capacity to honor MMI. Also many musicians, to honor a giant among them.

I was fortunate to attend the Centenary Celebration of Sri Madurai Mani Iyer at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan this evening. It was a very successful program. Cleaveland famous Sri V.K.Viswanathan and Sri VV.Sundaram were the prinicipal organisors assisted by a dedicated team of volunteers from among fans of Sri MMI. Sri V.K.Viswanathan compered and conducted the proceedings in an efficient manner although it was little bit informal in nature.

The talk given by the speakers was excellent. They took different aspects of MMI's music for analysis. Dr.S. A.K.Durga presented her research report on the voice aspect of Sri MMI. Dr.Narmada demonstrated with her violin on how sri MMI could coordinate with the accompany artistes, the amount of value he has given to the instruments and the respect he had given to the people who played the accompaniments. Sri K.s.Kalidas explained the Layam part of MMI. Sri Ravikiran narrated in general how Sri MMI accomplished his mission by carrying the art to the entire humanity from a scholar to a worker.Cleaveland Sri Sundaram spoke on the importance Sri MMI had given to his rasikas.

The vocal recital rendered by Sri R.Suryaprakash and Smt. Gayathri Girish was very good. Sri Suryaprakash was in his full form and the recital he has given today is of best standard compared to all the other programs I have attended so far. I hope our aasthaana Subbudu (Sri German Subbu) may come out with his detailed praising report on the music rendered by Suryaprakash and Gayathi Girish.

From our RBI Chennai Friends group myself, Sendi, German Subbu, T.V.S., and Rangachari attended the function. We could also find Sri C.S.Umapathy (Cricket Coach), Sri Jagannathan (H/O.Gita Jagannathan) in the audience.

Although the publicity given for this program was minimum, we could witness the maximum response. During the program. We could see a number of senior music artistes in the function. It was an unusual thing to witness - tea breaks twice.

Many artistes and persons associated with Sri MMI were honoured with presentation of mementos. I am happy to see that our friend Sri Venugopalan is one among them.

Printed souvenir containing various articles about Sri MMI and Audio CD's containing compilation of MMI recordings were distributed to the audience.

Although the program was drawn for a very long duration of seven hours, the tempo was sustained from the beginning to the end. Everyone was found very much attentive.

I am not able to end this write up without mentioning my regret that the attendance from RBItes was very much less than expected. It is not for somebody's sake we are attending. Indeed, those who could not and did not attend this program missed a wonderful opportunity,. I could say. This is my personal feeling. We should improve a lot in this regard at least in future.
With love and regards,

Though the Centenary celebrations at Bharatiya Vidhya Bhavan was a success , it can not be said to be a Grand

Success as it was with the Krishna Gana Sabha and the Luz Corner functions a few months ago . In those functions we heard

only MMI 's voice . After getting rasikas inputs at this function , I came to the conclusion that in a function spanning over

seven hours atleast three hours should be allotted for playing his recordings and it was actually little over ten minutes only .

Dear fellow-admirers of MMI,
I heard Suryaprakash's concert audio on Sangeethapriya.
The youngster has a very pleasant high pitched voice. My best wishes to him.
Of course Suryaprakash has to work hard, really hard, to become the true inheritor of the Madurai Mani mantle in terms of sruti alignment. This is only my lay opinion. And I am afraid he does not have too many role models among male stars today for that precise Sruti alignment that we saw in MMI ( or KVN or MDR...)

Dear Rasikas,

I also attend this function. It was well conducted and the theme was very nice and appropriate. Many thanks to Mr. VKV for his single handed lead considering his age.

Nevertheless, I noticed one thing while Kalidas presented the laya aspects of MMI's music. Kalidas attempted to explain the laya mastery of MMI through Sri Subramanyaya namaste redition of MMI from the available recording repository. The pallavi is sung in different tempos by MMI as it is sung by 90% of singers. The idea of Kalidas in this example was to explain how MMI's laya skills were, because MMI's recordings have no such laya pattern in his RTP, in contrast to his contemporaries who used to compose and present an RTP in different speeds. But in general, RTP is well constructed laya pattern, composed in appropriate raga by the singer most of the time. This gives an brilliant opportunity to display the skills of the singer in laya, raga and manodharma.

Now, how one can best explain this aspect with the example which Kalidas has chosen when every second musician also sang Sri Subrmanyaya namaste in the same familiar pattern. In my opinion, Kalidas could have picked out another suitable example that fits this case rather than this song to explain the music world how much MMI's laya skills were. In my opinion, there are 100s of neravals and swaram that MMI handled that had the accompaniment of laya genius like Palghat Mani Iyer, Lalgudi, Palani Subramania Pillai and so forth...

However, it was a very succesful function considering the cause. Why can't it be arranged in some venue in Chennai where we can listen to concerts of MMI with nice acoustics and invited audience to enlighten and ennoble us.

I also attended this function. Speeches by eminent persons threw lots of insights about the great MMI. But as Balummi said nothing beats listening to him. Just one song of the Great will not equal thousand hours of speech about him. However the ambience was excellent and i enjoyed every bit of it....just the samples played made the day for me.

I was there from 2-8 till Suryaprakash finished his concert but had to leave by then. Suryarakash gave a nice recital but the first item was not pleasing. but he warmed up and the rest of the concert was good. It was also good to see the mridangam maestro Shri Madras A Kannan making it to the occasion. I had the opportunity to witness him give a lec demo of his famous 1/4 chapu sometime back at Raga Sudha Hall.

I come to know that a CD was released during this function? (got to know from Venu Sundars post) Please let me know how to get a copy. Thanks.

Many many kudos to Dr. V K Vishwanathan (aka "CACM") for co-ordinating these series of events over the last several years across two continents, leading up to this grand centenary day.

Shri VKV symbolizes the hundreds of thousands of Madurai Mani Iyer "bhaktas" strewn around the globe, cutting across generations. The most touching story I heard was from VKV himself - apparently some years back he wrote a small autobiography for circulating among close friends and he could not find a picture of his mother. So in its stead Shri VKV used the picture of Madurai Mani Iyer (singing endless variations of "Kantiki Sundara Tharamagu Roopame" I am sure). Nothing more need be said.

Many thanks too to Shri Venu Sundar and other senior fans of Madurai Mani Iyer who made these functions possible.

I was there for one and half hours before Suryaprakash concert and also during the concert

# As uday pointed out ,precisely when Shri VKV told at the end with few tears ,where in he considered Shri MMi'S Photo as he could not get his mother's photo, showed how much shri MMI has influenced the no #1 rasika of MMI.

# Also Shri VKV took so much pains to honour many people . To honour say MSG and give it to Dr Narmada is one thing , but to trace back sisters of Smt Savithri(disciple of MMI) who died half a decade back in Lalgudi train mishap, invite son in law and grand son of Tiruvalangadu sundresa Iyer and Mayavaram Govindaraja pillai is truly a great accompolishment

# I personally felt the function was a great tribute to shri mmmi

On the suryaprakash-MAS-Mann Easwaran- BSP concert :
----------------------------------------------------------------
The recording is already there , just few +s and one irritating -

+ Swaras in general and in general packaging so much musical content within 80 mins was well done. I especially liked the kAmbOdhi after the ga pa ma gA for manOdharmam

+ Personally I only had access very recently to MMI's kamalAmbA bhairavi krithi . To me suryaprakash sang this beautifully, elongated sangathis with real power aided by real great tone of Mannargudi Easwaran with a touch of MAS exuberance was lovely.

- Volume Volume , I wish the knob was turned 45 degree anticlockwise from North to NorthWest. The volume of both Suryaprakash and Easwaran was loud ,perhaps I choose to sit at a wrong place in BVB in the ground floor . I always sit in the first floor balcony. But certainly the concert could have reduced volume , also when the ragas are pantuvarAli and kAmBodhi as submain and main ,may be the knob must have been turned 90 degrees anticlockwise from North to West .

Certainly very intense manOdharmam by suryaprakash who brings his originality and also following MMI swara prasthAna style.OVerall a very good concert for 80 mins

Agreed! Perhaps it could be published on Rasikas.org. Some of "multifaceted personalities" merit a thread all of their own.

If that is too public, then please consider extending the circulation. I'm right behind Rajesh in the queue.

My curiosity was stimulated recently, when I heard you name mentioned in the context of teaching physics here in Chennai. I started to wonder how your career took you to USA and a household-name institution. Then I heard that an autobiography exists. The stories of VKV in science and VKV in music must both be good ones. Let them be told :)

My humble pranams to all. I have always avoided posting in a thread which has a review of my concert but I feel I have to post something here to convey my deep feelings regarding the glorious celebration of Parama Guru Madurai Mani Iyer mama's Centenary at BVB Hall and also about my fellow artist(s) who presented the second concert of the evening. I could see many people sitting in the audience moved to tears, listening to the speeches of Shri. Cleveland Shri.V V Sundaram mama and Shri.VKV. and yours truly was no exception. It was a unique learning experience for me listening to the analytical and emotional lec-dems of Durgamma, Ravikiranji, Narmada ji and Kalidas sir. Not to forget Yessel ji's nimble fingers on the computer, selecting the choicest gems from an eclectic collection and the stupendous volunteering work done by Venugopalan sir and Chandraiah sir. I have always felt I needed another Janma to fathom the musical ocean, Parama Guru MMI mama and this feeling was further reinforced on listening to the rare masterpieces played specially on the occasion. I can only offer my profound respects to my Guru Sangeetha Kalanidhi Shri.T.V.Sankaranarayanan sir as I think "How fortunate I am to have been an understudy of this immortal baani of Caranatic Music?".

I would like to specially offer my appreciation to my fellow artiste Smt.Gayathri Girish and her team for presenting a wonderful performance as the second concert of the day. It is very difficult to do justice to certain compositions which, even though, having percolated through the hierarchies of a common tradition but have been given an individualistic stamp of excellence by a musical genius, which Smt.Gayathri did amply. I was able to stay for the concert only till Smt.Gayathri started her main raga due to my other commitments but thoroughly enjoyed what was sung till then - the Vaara kriti (Surya Murthe, Saurashtram, Sadananda Thandavam(bahudaari), Thelisi Rama Chintana (Purnachandrika), Saarasamukhi (gowda Malhaar, with chittaswarams). Narmada ji on the violin was playing a second innings of excellence that day after her lecdem. Mannarkoil J Balaji played superb sarvalaghu that everyone was reminded of Vellore Shri.Ramabhadran mama, especially during "Sadananda Thandavam", Adambakkam Shankar was greatly supportive too. Forgive me dear rasikas, this is my first attempt to even write a semblence of a report, leave alone review! - with regards - R.Suryaprakash

TOGETHER!As mentioned by you VVS and VKV SIRS speeches made every one CRY perhaps in happiness ie ANANDHA KANNER!Of course ALL OF US worked as if it was one of the FAMILY FUNCTIONS>All the RASIKAS ARE THE BLESSED LOT and we THANK ONE AND ALL>WE do not STOP here but we are only starting to say the TRUTH.We have very big and ambitious plans for the future which I shall write in detail,Of course MS Gaythri Girishs concert was a FITTING FINALE to the emotional event and GG was in TOP form to say the least. Her rendering of MMI HITS were melodious and sweet with total dedication.Surya and GG brought the MMI memory to ALL the RASIKAS with blissful MUSIC!
Madurai Mani Maddys plans are many and MORE to come.We appeal through this RASIKAS>ORG for their support from ALL angles. We plan to have one place permanently for MADURA MANI and perhaps a BUST will be place in the centre of the MANIMANDAPAM if one can call it.We shall try to make maximum recordings of the great ICON MMI and ANY MADDY CAN RECORD THE SAME FREE OF COST>But the initial expenditure for the small or BIG hall will be borne by the RASIKAS as a WHOLE.WE may also hold MONTHLY LISTENING SESSIONS permanently in the venue in future. On behalf of ALL the MADDYS I appeal ALL your support for the dreamy venture.PLS RESPOND!
