A discussion of Yathi of the Tala Dasapranas

Post by sridharrajagopal »

Hola folks!

I wanted to share with you an interesting video I came across on Yathi http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsOYztao8FM . It is in Tamil, so unfortunately, if you don't understand Tamil, you won't be able to follow.

Cheers,
Sridhar

Very clearly explained with examples. Thanks Sridhar for the link.

I gave it a try.

Yes, if you know the principles of what he is saying, one can follow partly at least.

More important, perhaps, is the project from which is an extract, which is a DVD on nattavangam. Those following the link to the video will find link to the DVD sale page. I'm sure this will be invaluable to many.

We had someone on this forum a year or so ago, desperate for such information. I think, though, maybe he didn't speak Tamil either. Such a person could still, perhaps, benefit by attending to examples, even if not understanding the explanation.

Oh, the video isn't difficult to understand (I found this title rather frightening!). What is a Tala Dasaprana?

Perhaps someone should try to add close-captioning to the video!

Srikant, tala dasapranas are the 10 characterizing features of talas (dasa = 10, prana - life force) - the following link has an explanation - http://www.mridangams.com/2007/09/tala- ... ranas.html - I'm sure there are many more .

Cheers,
Sridhar

I think... ten characteristics of laya rather than talam. Isn't talam one of them?

(I say this without checking the text books first :$)

Thanks for the origin of the word: I don't think I ever knew, or registered that.
