Interesting discussion on different varalis - Panthuvarali, Kokilavarali, SubaPanthuvarali, Kuntalavarali, Prathapavarali, Jalavarali, Vasanthavarali, Punnagavarali and Varali.

It was not clear to me whether these ragas are related to each other, other than thru shared names. Can learned forum members explain this please.

Can we have some tracks and discussion on varALi? I know there's many compositions in it yet the dearth of their performance in concerts is staggering.

There's one common (and sublime) link that I found among the main Varali ragas - Varali, Pantuvarali and Shuba Pantuvarali. The explanation is a bit stretched but I think I will play quiz master for a change anyway! Clues - it has to do with intervals and Jalavarali also qualifies....also, there's at-least one "non-Varali" raga in the list...

Anyone game? I have my bloody red pen out already - Hee, Hee, Hee!!

Good question :) Apart from these 3 rAgas, there is no correction between the other rAgas in the Hindu report ( vasanta varALi, pratApa varALi, kuntalavarALi, kOkilavarALi etc. In that sense the reviewers statement " The beauty of raga Varali in all its manifestations was captured " has no meaning at all.

I found your comment ....also, there's at-least one "non-Varali" raga in the list... a bit confusing

Ramakriya, going by the quiz results I suppose you could be trusted to nail it!

Anyway, for the others, here's the common link, even it seems a little far-fetched to some - these are the only ragas to have a single interval interval on both sides around the tonic constants i. e N3 S R1 and M2 P D1. It might seem trivial but the effect is anything but - Hindustani musicians, in particular, exploit these packed intervals in a haunting manner - Bhimsen Joshi's Multani and Rashid Khan's Miyan Ki Todi spring to mind immediately.

The non-Varali raga is Lalith, which also features this phenomenon. Of course, there may be some other janyas of the above ragas which may also qualify.

Multani does not use PD1 but uses D1P.It uses PN3S in the aro.

Thanks for the clarifications Kartik - but one can nonetheless observe the intricate usages around the tonics at times......Multani's characteristic "pidis" I suppose are MP---, MPG, MPN etc.

Vijay,

Let me stretch this a bit further. You can also find this combination in Gaulipantu if you are singing the M2 version of the raga. An example would be singing swaras like

NSRN,,DP MPDM,, GRSN (Tera teeyaga raada).

Of course whether or not this raga should be sung with M2 is a whole different debate!!

Agree with you Rasaali - it would. Gandhara varja janyas/vakras of the three main varalis would also qualify although these are mostly obscure ragas...

Voleti Venkateswarulu used to sing brilliant alapanas of varali for "Marakatha manivarna", "Yetijanmamidi" (both of Tyagaraja). Ariyakudi and KV Narayanaswamy both reveled in singing neraval for the line "aravinda patra nayanam govindam uragashayanam" from Seshachalanayakam (Dikshitar). Semmangudi rendered "Karunayelakante" (tyagaraja) , "Mamavameenakshi" (Dikshitar), and Syama Sastri's "Kamakshi" very movingly. His RTP (i think its from that famous Airport Concert) is stupendous. Brindamma's "Valapudasanerane" (Kshetrayya) and "Maragathamanivarna" are gems - simply one of a kind.

I just remembered "vanajaksha", the chaturasra ata tala varna of Poochi Iyengar sung superbly by KV Narayanaswami.

@rmdeer2000, yes "Kamakshi" is a speciality of their school. Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer, Santanam also sing this composition. Bangaru Kamakshi must have gifted it to them.
