I visited Ajji on sankranti day last January to pay my respects. She is a real gem of a person! In spite of poor health, she was such an eager conversationist that I couldn't bring myself to take leave of her after 3 hours... Later this year, she looks forward to celebrating Rambhau Kundgolkar's (Savai Gandharva) aradhane in Kundgol - her guru bhakti is so inspiring.... God bless and keep her for all of us

Cool,
And it was twenty years ago! Her seventy fifth birthday. What a woman, what a life! We were lucky enough to hear her in two house concerts in the early eighties.
The name Mulle comes to me in a flash. Wonder if Vijay Mulle is related to the Mrs. Mulle I knew briefly through my aunt. I traveled from Bombay to Pune with them where my aunt had official business. Mrs. Mulle, I gathered, was a rasika. She seemed interested in the CM and hindi film songs I sang--being polite to my aunt, may be--and when my aunt went on to Dharwar to attend a conference, it was arranged that I would stay with Mrs. M with her friends in Pune, and return to Bombay the next morning. I had a surprise. Her friend turned out to be Bhimsen Joshi, and late into the night, he sang, his wife's ustad played the sitar, and there was a tabla player too. We crashed on the floor for a few hours' sleep, in that old fashioned house with an atrium (did they live on one side of the house?). When it was time for us to leave the next morning, Mrs. Joshi, donned in traditional sari (was it a special puja day?), prepared hot khichdi for breakfast, after which they said goodbye to their friend and the stranger who came to stay the night...

Gangubai once told film-maker Vijaya Mulay, in the initial years of television: "If a male musician is a Muslim, he becomes an Ustad. If he is a Hindu, he becomes a Pandit. But women like Kesarbai and Mogubai just remain Bais."
Kji, do u have an audio clip? Her mother Ambabai was a Carnatic musician. She was so brilliant that the best of musicians came to listen to her.

Today Kundagol has one of the most quaint looking Railway stations. The platform is at a level lower than the ground level , so that we have to climb a flight of stairs to walk out.Trains often stop here , waiting for a signal to chug into Hubli.
Those few minutes of unplanned enjoyment , when I run up to pick up a conical packet of Mandakki -Khara(Pori-Mixture) from a very fine shop upstairs , is pure bliss,
Now, have I made Shanks homesick??
Any one cares for a gangubai "bole re papee hara" here ??

cool sahebra,
sadhanakeriya geleyanobbana daye ( a friend of mine from sadhanakeri (dharawada) sent me this). A extremely soulful rendition of Bageshri (?).. who cares what raga it is when it can take you to the depths of bhava?

lingering doubt whether it were actually bageshri(usage of panchama?) . Im gven to believe that pancham is varjya in bageshri
