Dear friends,

I am looking for the lyrics and meaning of padavarnam "annamE aruginil vA"(rAgA: valaji. Adi tALA. Composer: Subbudu). Unfortunately it seems like the previous threads related to this topic are not anymore available on rasikas. I have started to learn a choreography of this varnam and would greatly appreciate going through the lyrics and words, to better understand and interpret the text. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much,

Laetitia

Here is the meaning as posted by our own rshankar:
annamE = swan or a young girl
aruginil = close (to me)
vA = come,
antarangam = personal secret
onru = one
sholvEn = (I will) confide in/tell you
kELaDI = please listen:

deivayAnai says: Oh Swan! (or alternately, Oh friend!), please listen with compassion as I confide a painful personal secret to you.

endanukku = (Only) to me
sondamAna = belonging (to me)
kandanai = Murugan
mayakki = bewitched,
iyakki = dazzled,
aDimai konDa = enslaved,
enna dAn = what special
mAyamO = magic (is this)?
enna sUdum = what chicanery?
vAdum = (NOT SURE - Could mean intoxicating speech)
nAn ariyillEn = I am not aware
kaDamai tannai = (His) duty
marandu = (has) forgotten,
tan pOkkinil pOi = (he) has gone (pOi) his (tan) merry (pOkkinil), taLLukkil = (in her) tawdry/cheap seductiveness
mayangi = (having become) intoxicated
tavari viTTAr = (he has) gone astray (tavari).

Murugan, who was ALL MINE, has been bewitched by this damsel and is under the spell of her cheap and tawdry seduction. I do not know what magic spell has been cast on him but he seems to have forgotten his duty (to me) and has been lead astray.

yenna tAn = what ever (did he)
kanDArO = see (in her)
anda = that
kaLLi = thief
vaLLiyiDam = (that) vaLLi,
yenna = what
dUpam = smoke/smoke screen to hide (her) real intentions
pOTTALLO = (did she) cast

pArAmal = without considering,
yennai = me
vittu = discrading (me)
shenrArE = (he) went away
chinnatanamAga = in a very small-minded act.

I am not sure what he saw in her (that I don't have). Maybe she cast a smokescreen and seduced him. Be that as it may, with out even considering her lineage or details of her birth, he (Murugan) has become very small-minded, and has discarded me for a dalliance with her.

varaTTum, = let him come (back home)
varaTTum
vazhi sheigirEn = I (will) settle things,
yendan = my
maNAlan = husband
inru = today
ingu = here
varaTTum, vazhi sheigirEn.

If he comes here today, I will settle things once and for all with him.

vEngai maramAnavar = (he who) became a type of tree
varaTTum = let him come (here).

Disguised as a hunter and pretending to hunt, he (Murugan) went for a dalliance with the huntress (vaLLI), but when her dad returned home, petrified, he (Murugan) turned himself into a tree. Let him come home (I will get to the bottom of this)!

tApam = desire
taNiyAmal = not having been quenched
mIndum = once again
angu = there
shenru = he went,
taLLAdi = tottering
viruddan = old man

dayavAl = out of pity
nIr = water
tanda = (she who) gave
vanjiyai = girl
thazhuva = caress
pArthu = tried to
tOTRavar = (he who) touched (her)
varaTTum = Let him come (here).

With unfulfilled desire, he went to her abode again the next day in the form of a tottering old mendicant and asked for some food. After eating the 'tiNai' that was offered, he pretended to become extremely thirsty and it appears that she (vaLLI) took pity on him and gave him some water. Instead of drinking the water, he tried to caress her. Let him get back, (I will get to the bottom of this).

vA = Please come
yAnai mugatOnE = elephant (yAnai) faced-one

tIrka = to remove
vA, nI vA,

nI = you
yen mEl = on me
irangi = granting my wish
ikkaNamE = this instant,
takshaNamE = this very second
yenravar = (he who) said
varaTTum = let him come!

Failing in all of his attempts to woo vaLLI, this husband of mine then invokes his brother, the elephant-faced one, to help him win her over. He (Murugan) entreats him (gaNapati) to come ambling like an elephant that very instant, and scare vaLLI into his (Murugan's) arms. Let this man (who has done this to me) come home, I WILL MAKE HIM PAY!
