RSHANKAR:

There is no ragam set to the Pasurams....its upto the singer to sing in any ragam he/she wants. I too have heard this in mohanam and i just sang it bilahari because i wanted a prelude to Narasimha nannu brovave.

I will certainly post the ragas for the bhajans i posted.

For starters others/i (active members, i do not know abt silent lot) on this forum we enjoy slokam and viruttam - We had a long thread running on that subject, check 'general discussions" sec.

So kick-off with slokam-viruttam and we'll shall add to that list ;)

Any raga is fine with me.

So, why this particular set, some may ask. This sequence was our family regular morning and evening sloka routine when we were kids, before getting on with other things.

Don't worry about any particular shloka. They are all good. Choose whatever you are familiar with. If we don't know we will request the lyrics. But most of the prayer shlokas are well known. We are not any sticklers for the raga either. Choose whatever is comfortable for you. Don't put the shruti high! We love your natural voice! Note this is all informal and you are in the company of friendly Rasikas!

One more thing!
Just announce the raga at the beginning and also sing the arohanam and avrohanam at the start. This will help me to analyze your voice and possibly MIDIfy the shlokam in future. Thanks

All over the place with the help of google. I did not keep track of the sites though. Just searched with the first few words..

Since you asked, I retraced my steps and found out that I got some of them from here: http://www.panchangam.com/shlokas.htm

And while looking at it, I remembered the following one used to be in our daily schedule as well.

yA kundEndu tuShArahAra dhavaLA

yA vINA varadaNDa maNDitakarA

Sumati: Ditto what CML said. It is all your choice.

CML, with respect to announcing the ragas and arohanam avarohanam, will it be OK if Sumati posts that separately.. We do not want the flow of the slokas to be interrupted and also we can have the exercise of identifying the ragas.

VK,
I was just wondering who had posted those lyrics: it must be some one who can't distinguish the k brand of sounds from the g brand and so on and so forth...reminds of the concert review in this Friday's Hindu where the singer is supposed to have sung 'biparE rAma rasam' of Sadasiva Brahmendra.

it is important to have the aro/avaro of the ragam at the beginning in audio to get her aadhaara shadjam for a MIDI analysis. It is the mUrcana posting of DRS is what helped me to get the cyutapancamam! Also it permits sumati to maintain a clean shruti!

Haimanthi Shukla has sung this .
Somehow your singing reminds me of haimanthi very much.
here is a page where her muisc can be sampled.
try the last one Sandhya Godhuli lagane ke- the sample of course -on the hamara cd page.
http://www.hamaracd.com/hcdindia/ASP/Co ... iftideas=2

I have never been a big fan of bengali music (somehow all the songs seem the same to me ) but Haimanthi is different.

We were recently at a naming ceremony of the daughter of one my wife's colleagues. The baby's paternal grandfather is a priest in the brahmO samAj, and their ceremony was filled with music (rabIndra sangIt)...It was very melodious and soothing. I thought I recognized strains of dEsh, mOhanam, and possibly kApI or something akin to it in this music.

As an aside, one of RDA's original students (forget her name) from Bengal had enrolled in Kalakshetra on Sri Tagore's urging. On her return to shAntinikEtan, she choreographed several pieces of tagOre's music in bharatanATyam style. Many years ago, Madras DD had broadcast a half hour program on this one morning, and all I remember is how the singers moved from mInAkshI mEmudam to a bengali song rather effortlessly.

Thank you! I am honoured to be compared with Smt. Haimonti Shukla. I finally had the chance to listen to her. Until you mentioned, I did not know about her. I remember you saying this in one of your earlier posts too. Haimontiji has such a clear voice!! She sings so well! It made me thirsty for more of her songs. As i was searching through google, i came accross Salilda's site. But could not listen to the songs listed there!!

As far as Rabindra Sangeet goes, I have listened to Hemant Kumar, Suchitra Moitra, etc. But Hemontidi's voice is different!! It is still ringing in my ears! I enjoy Nuzrul Geet more bcos they haev more of shastriya sangeet in them.
