Smt. Santanam's recent vocal recital for the music academy was a perfect example of open throated renditions of kritis. Her renditions were weighty and invoked the right senses in the audience. The choice of kritis, covering most known composers of the post-trinity era, and carefully not repeating anybody, was very nice to see. The AlApanais of sahAnA and Anandabhairavi were short and sweet. The shanmukhapriyA and tODi were elaborate and with enough grandeur to be fitting for the kritis to follow. The sAvEri viruttam was rendered very well, by Smt. Srinivasan, who happens to the niece of Smt. Santanam and the daughter of veteran vocalist of yesteryears, Smt. Rukmani Sundararajan.
Both kalpitam and manodarmam parts of the concert were very much enjoyable. Smt Hemalatha and Sri Vaidhyanathan provided very sensible support and played in accordance to what was being sung.
A nice concert over all.

Thank you Bharath for the concert review--and I wasn't aware that she was going to give this concert!
As you say, a very good selection of songs. Jayalakshmi's classicism is well known. When it comes to krutis other than the main ones, her short crisp rAgA renderings are typical of her.
Padma Srinivasan is a special singer in the family. She has also been a student of SSI at the Trivandrum Academy. When she was growing up, her home was buzzing with musicians who came to stay with them when they were in town to give concerts.
By the way, who organized the event? Is it possible to get a sampling
of the concert?

Usually when any thamizh krithi is on Lord Shiva or Chidambaram , my mind(quite sure that many of yours too) tricks that it is GKB, despite knowing that as a neelakanta shivan(as enraikku shivakripai) or mistaking kAna vendamO (a pApanAsam shivan krithi , generally our mind tricks that as GKB too) or a sevikka vendumayyA (a Muttu thAndavar one , our mind tricks that as GKB too) .HarishankarK wrote:enraikku sivakrupai - mukhAri - misra cApu -is a composition of Sri Neelakanta Sivan and not GKB
Bharath,
I am some what sure you knew that was neelakanta shivan , your mind tricked as GKB .
and I am very certain that Smt jayalakshmi santhAnam must have given a lot of smt DKP shades which you forgot to mention in your review.
