What is mnemonic name and phrase of a raga?
I went to wikipedia and searched for "Dheerashankarabharanam". I found a relevant page. I understood everything but what does this mean:
The mnemonic name is Bana-Ma. The mnemonic phrase is sa ri gu ma pa dhi nu
This is there for all the ragas.
Can somebody please explain?

The 72 mela kartha ragas are divided into 12 chakras, each chakram consisting of 6 ragas. The chakras are namedas :
indu (mela ragas 1 - 6)
Netra (7 - 12 )
Agni(13 - 18)
Veda (19 - 24)
Bana (25 - 30)
Rutu (31 - 36)
Rushi ( 37 - 42)
Vasu (43 - 48)
Brahma(49 - 54)
Disi (55 - 60)
Rudra ( 61 - 66)
Aditya (67 - 72)
The serial number of each raga in a chakra is denoted by a letter as per the katapayadi system.
Thus pa -1, sri - 2, go - 3, bhu - 4, ma -5, sha - 6
For example bana-ma refers to the 5th raga in the 5th chakra ie.
29th mela raga Dheera sankarabharanam.
The mnemonic phrase refers to the swaras taken by a mela raga.
These are:
ra ri ru ga gi gu ma mi dha dhi dhu na ni nu
R1 R2 R3 G1 G2 G3 M1 M2 D1 D2 D3 N1 N2 N3

The swaras taken by Dheerasankarabharanam are ri (R2),
gu(G3) ma (M1) dhi (D2) nu (N3)

It will be of interest to note that the chakras are named as follows:
1st chakra-Indu-meaning moon-there is only one moon
2nd chakra -nEtra-meaaning eyes-there are two of them
3rd one-agni- fire-there are three.
4 is vEda-there are four vedas and so an so forth.
ending with 12th chakra-AdityA-there are twelve of them.

Punarvasu,
Thanks for the nomenclature! They are indeed interesting! I didn't know how to correlate the names with numbers!!
I know only now that these have significance.
Thank you!!!

It will be of interest to know that shankarAAbharaNam, kalyANi, tODi etc were renamed by adding prefixes like dhIra, mEca and hanumat in order to conform to the katapayAdi sankhyA.
