A lovely clip of Hemant-da singing 'Yeh nayan dare dare', song from 'Kohraa'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sThonxgXQjI
What a great singer he was, also an excellent music director.
From his homepage http://faculty.ist.unomaha.edu/pdasgupt ... index.html

Hemanta Kumar Mukherjee(1920-1989) Indian singer and composer. Most prolific in the 50's and the 60's. Also an eloquent interpreter of Rabindranath Tagore's songs (Rabindra Sangeet). A versatile composer, he scored films such as Nagin, Kohraa and Bees Saal Baad. One of his songs from the Hindi film Jaal opened and closed the syndicated television series Movie Mahal in Britain and to hear him sing "This night, this moonlight may never be ours again. Heed the story of my heart...." was to be transported, even if the viewer did not understand the language. The age-old story of the power of music.

Ravi,
Thank you for the clips. Oh, such a young Dev Anand and Geeta Bali (?).
ragam_talam,
Yes, very nice. My favorite song of his is 'E rAt E cAndni'. Isn't it a duet which he sings with Lata? 'AhaT tEri suntI hUn, khAmOsh nigAhOnse'. What poets they were who wrote the lyrics! The song remained as the number one hit on the Binaca Geetmala, the most popular pop music program of our days.
GBL,
Remember, Amin Sayani used to be the DJ just as mayilvAganan was for the tamizh version ? For you young ones, the Binaca (toothpaste sponsor) weekly broadcasts came from Srilanka. Memories of such sweet music...

Another favorite of mine, Na tum hamen jano

Hemant-da's voice is so hauntingly memorable.
There's such an indescribable beauty to the films from that era, don't you agree?
Even with all the fancy settings and special effects, today's movies pale in comparison.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be...

This great man gave a live performance in the 60s in Music Academy. It was a morning concert. Just two people, Hemant Da and a tabalchi. Hemantda had a harmonium in front of him and played it himself. Absolute bliss for 3 hours. Can never forget it in my life time ( for my vicarious pleasure, how many of you would have had this kind of previlege ? mmmm......answer me !!)

Ravi,
The scene enhances the song too! Eternal triangle stated, restated in words, camera angles, Ashok Kumar's acting without acting! Every time HK sang chalO, it reminded me as to which part of India he came from.
Sam,
Okay. Wish I had been there too. But if you had said it was Rafi, I would have been really envious!

Btw, there is a writeup on Suman Kalyanpur at this page:ragam-talam wrote:Another favorite of mine, Na tum hamen jano

Suman Kalyanpur aka Suman Hemady was born on January 28, 1937 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, (which was then a part of India under British Raj), her maiden name being Hemady. In 1943, her family moved to Mumbai (then Bombay), where she received her musical training. She married Ramanand S. Kalyanpur.
Once Talat Mahmood heard Kalyanpur singing in a musical concert. Highly impressed, he recommended her to his music recording company, HMV. At age 17, she provided her first playback singing for the movie, Mangu (1954), singing the song Koi PukÄÂÂ

Ravi: Nice connection making. You mean that from the lyrics, the scene or the music pov?rshankar wrote:I always felt that this songs was a great counter-point to 'calO ik bAr phir sE ajnabI ban jAyE' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cE5q9kst-Zc)ragam-talam wrote:Another favorite of mine, Na tum hamen jano

Re: Golden voice of Hemant Kumar
Thanks for posting the link for Hemant Kumar songs. I have been a big fan of his music both in hindi and bengali.
