Meaning

Pallavi : How excellent is the devotion to our father rAma is!

Anupallavi : How excellent is that devotion to our father rAma is, which brings to an end the wandering(s) of the mind and protects the devotee like the eye lids protecting the eyes!

Charanam

1. How excellent is the devotion to our father rAma is, but for which would lakShmI dEvi so fervently love Him? or would lakShmaNa serve Him with such dedication? or would the sharp minded bharata feel ecstatic by beholding Him again and again?

2. How excellent is the devotion to our father rAma is, but for which would Sabari offer (already tasted and thus unfit for offering) tasted (bitten) fruits? or would Lord Siva - wearer of crescent moon praise Him? or would the Lord bestow on lass svayamprabha the eternal state?

3. How excellent is the devotion to our father rAma is, but for which can a monkey leap across the mighty ocean? or, can an ordinary cow-herd woman (yaSOda) tie the Lord to mortar? and can bliss be heightened to this sinner tyAgarAja?

Notes

Raga : – In all books other than that of TSV/AKG, the rAga is given as ‘pantuvarALi’.

Anupallavi : gAcunA – this is how it is given in all books other than that of CR, where it is given as ‘gAcu’. However, from the way the anupallavi is composed, ‘gAcu’ seems to be appropriate.

Charanam 2 : abala svayamprabhA - The story of svayamprabhA comes in the kiShkindA kAnda of rAmAyaNa. During their search of sIta, AnjanEya and others reach a divine cave, where they find a wonderful city guarded by an aged ascetic woman by name svayamprabhA. She is daughter of merusAvarNi and has been granted boons by Gods. However, vAlmIki rAmAyaNa doesn’t seem to contain any further reference about her emancipation in the hands of SrI rAma. This is found in adhyAtma rAmAyaNa – kiShkindA kANDa – 6th Chapter.
