his compositions are famous in Bharatanatyam - particularly kalakshetra school. I know of 2: nI uraippAi hanumAnE (rAgamAlika, with very nice usage of raga-mudras), and a daSAvatAram (again rAgamAlika).

Anyone with a recording of nI uraippAi hanumAnE? On the old sangeetham BB, I remember someone saying that they had a version sung by Adayar Lakshman...it would be awesome if it were posted!

Enmugam paraiya shanmughane in amrithavarshini and a lot of viruttams of yazhpAnam veeramani were popularized by MaharAjapuram Santhanam. Once in one of the concert shri rAmachandran said that lot of veeramani's compositions were tuned by santhanam,in 1960's when santhanam was prinicipal of music college of jaffna(yazhpAnam).

LJi
Can we have the complete list of yazhpanam veeramani songs. While posting please use an empty space after few lines for better readability

Kumaran,

I have a book in Tamil with me that has the complete 72 mela raga compositions of Sri Veeramani Iyer. This collection was published in 2000 by Smt Sivasakthi Sivanesan, who is a music teacher here in London and a disciple of Sri Veeramani Iyer.

In case you are interested (and can read Tamil!) I can try and get this book for you. Do drop me an email.

Lakshman and Kumaran,

Sorry for the inordinate delay in getting the book. Good news is that I've finally managed to get a copy for you! Should be on its way soon to your mailboxes.

Hi :) I too am extremely interested in finding out about Veeramani Iya's book which Mr.Jayaram has mentioned about. Does it contain notations too? I would love to buy it. I live in Sri Lanka and find that there's no such book available here :( I look forward to hearing from you!

I did not realise Nee Uraippaai Hanumane was a composition of Yalpanam Veeramani Iyer. I thought it was one of Arunachala Kavi's Rama Nataka keerthanams. Can someone confirm this?

Just an updated list of this talented composer's songs:

Gajamukha Ganapathi (Nattai - Adi)
Batu Malai (Kalyani - Adi)
Sarangan Marugane (Ragamalika - Adi)
Kuncharan Sothara (Amrithavarshini - Adi)
Enada Muruga (Thilang - Adi)
En Mugam Paareya (Amrithavarshini - Adi)
Bharathil Panbu (Kalyani - Adi)
Chinna Vayathile (Maand - Adi)
Vanna Vanna Chelai (Thilang - Adi)
Ennadi Pechu (Begada - Adi)
Kalyana Vasantha Mandapathil (Kalyana Vasantha - Adi)
Kandhan Idam (Lathangi - Adi)
Karpagavalli Nin (Ragamalika - Adi)
Kuzhaloothi Vilayaadi (Bageshri - Adi)
Mattunagar (Desh - Thisra Adi)
Navarasa Nayaki (Ragamalika - Adi)
Chellakani Vaayaal (Brindavana-Saranga - Adi)
Dasavatharam: Avatharam Seithaanadi (Ragamalika - Adi)

Does anyone have a list of his melakartha krithis?

I recently knew that ninAikAda neramillai -sindhubhairavi is by jaffna veeramani iyer. This no is popularized by madurai somu and presently suryaprakash sings that.

Here is a brief report about Jaffna veeramani iyer when he passed away
http://www.tamilnet.com/art.html?catid=13&artid=10074

His numbers especially that chellakani vAyAl solladi , karpagavalii nin are just janaranjaka gems . maharajapuram santhanam certainly brought out those numbers and with those numbers like chellakani, sarangan marugane , en mugam paraiyyA his fans grew multifold.

I am assuming that during the srilankan thamizh exodus of 80's , he came from jaffna and settled in tanjore. Is that right, certainly the political climate of srilanka took this composer's lovely compositions away from vidwans and vidushis. Time to bring those back !!!

We keep hearing in general ,telugu is intrinsically carnatic friendly as most of the words ends with vowels thus producing more scope for a musician to sing more musical sangathis .Certainly it is a fact

# But it takes a really sound vagayekkara to challenge a bit of those hardcore facts, take a look at these words of yazhpAnam veeramani Iyer in thamizh, very simple and lucid, you just get the bhakthi quotient in one scan

Read these lines....

1: enda vELaiyum kanda vELai cintanai seidiDu manamE
enda nALum sondamAga namai vandu kAppAn vElavanE

2: sundara tamizinil tudittu ninrAl anda sendil sevvEzhum nam mun varuvAn
kanda kOTTattil amarndiDum kumaran kuLir shentamizh tiruppugazh viruppaDai amara

3: shentamArai kaNNanin marugan antAmarai mEl tavazh murugan
mandAra puSpa maNi mArbazhagan pondAr pUvaLi aLiyenai pugazh tan

# when you read those lines even assuming if the rAga tuned by the composer is not known , see how beautifully brindAvani (brindAvana saranga )fits the bill to the lyrics. How composer writes the lyrics and then fits the rAga from thousands of ragas to get the carnatic zing is an unsolved mystery and a gift.

enda vELaiyum kanda vELai. rAgA: brndAvani. Adi tALA. Composer: N.Viramani Iyer.

# What is the use of writing lyrics and having a rAga and if a musician does not polish it and present it to rasikas.

# Hear hear hear this brilliant baritoned maharAjapuram rAmachandran singing this number

# maharajapuram ramachandran sings this yAzhpAnam veeramani number in brindAvani, see the emote in a higher pitch in anupallavi in the lines "kanda kOTTattil amarndiDum". I have been told sundara telugu(which movie was that kappOlitiya thamizhan) , but hear veeramani writes as sundara tamizinil

# See the lower sthayi caressing in mandAra puSpa maNi mArbazhagan.

This is a recording of maharajapuram ramachandran singing yAzhpAnam veeramani's number(this is a doordarshan recording , so no problem with copyrights)

And 'naLinakAntimatIm' as well, right? It was the second rAgamAlika song I heard with the names of the rAgas intervowen (the first was 'karpagavalli' - which used to be a favorite nalangu pATTu for many mylApUr vAsis!). I think Sri Santanam may have fashioned his 'sArangan maruganE' along the lines of 'naLinakAntimatIm'....

Ravi,
I am assuming sArangan marugaNe came first (yAzhpAnam veeramani may have tuned with santhanam as early as when santhanam was principal of jaffna music college in early 60's). nalinakAnthimathim is by madurai v. krishnaswami who may have tuned it much later is my calculated guess. This gentleman madurai krishnaswami was working in AGS office or something , if my memory is right.

Ravi
In the lyrics of endha velaiyum, every line is self explanatory, excepting the last phrase "pondAr pUvaLi aLiyenai pugazh tan". What does that mean?

VKRaman
Nice rendition , your voice is bit similiar to CML. Both of you can pair up as rasikas brothers and give concerts  . You sing it as Anda kOTTattil instead of kanda kOTTattil

I believe Sarangan Marugane was a composition of Yazhpanam Veeramani Iyer who also tuned it.

The Dasavatharam item composed by Yazhpanam Veeramani Iyer was tuned by Adyar K. Lakshman. The ragas are Surutti, Boopalam, Bilahari, Thodi, Atana, Sahana, Shanmugapriya, Nattaikurinji, Arabhi, Hamsanandi & Mohanam.
