Sri.Subbaraya Shastry, grandson(?) of Sri Shyama Shastri has composed excellent songs in CM.

Janani Ninuvina in Reethi Gowla is almost an authoratative composition for Reethigowla.

Nannu Brochutaku in Thodi is majestic and reminds of Sri Shyama Shastri.

Venkata Shaila in Hameer kalyani is also his composition.

It will be nice to have a list of his compositions as well as his mudra he has used in his compositions.

Manjunathji,

Please dont ask a question in the title. You had asked "Can we have a list of songs composed by Subbaraya Shastry?"

Just "subbaraya shastry" is a good title, particularly because we are dealing with numerous composers in the vaggeyakaras section, let's keep the title general so others can contribute about subbaraya shastry in the same thread - makes organizing better. Thanks.

Wasn't Subbaraya Shyama Shastri's son?

I rembember reading long ago in the Sangeetham archives that Sri Subbaraya Sastri chose Kumara as his mudra since he was born in the kritthika nakshatra

Yes, I have just now verified that Subbaraya Shastry(1803-1862) was Shyama Shastry's second son. Initially, he learnt under his father and later joined Thyagaraja. He had also mastered in playing an instrument "sArinda". It's mentioned that, his composition " niNu vinA gathi gAna" in Kalyani, he sang in Thiruvaiyar's Dharma Samvardhini temple in the presence of Thyagaraja.

meena
talacinavaru = one who thinks / remembers
talapu = thought /wish

dalapu/dalacina/dalacinavaru come in between a sentence but not at the beginning of a sentence.

'ta' becomes 'da' in usage.

for example:

rAdalacinavAru = those who wish to come (rA = to come)
pOdalacinavAru = those who wish to go (pO = to go)

Divakar,
Thanks for explaining that - I always assumed that talacina became dalacina because of tamizh tranliteration....that also explains how cinta tIrci could become cintadIrci...

This information is correct and annasvAmi ShAstri, grandson of ShrI ShyAma ShAstri and son of pancu ShAstri, was adopted by subbarAya ShAstri. Their descendants are the family of ShrI S. rAja and their family lives somewhere in the South.

Nice writeup on Subbaraya Sastry here:
http://musicinfoguide.blogspot.com/2007 ... raphy.html

It's interesting to learn about the lineage of Veena Dhanammal:
"Later Subbaraya Shastry shifted to Udayarpalayam, whose rulers became his patrons. Since he had no sons, he adopted his nephew Annasami Sastri, who became his primary disciple and an accomplished composer. Tanjavur Kamakshi, the dancer, was one of his disciples. Legendary Veena Dhannammal was the grand daughter of Tanjavur Kamakshi."

To quote vs_manjunath: "It's mentioned that, his composition " niNu vinA gathi gAna" in Kalyani, he sang in Thiruvaiyar's Dharma Samvardhini temple in the presence of Thyagaraja"

I am listening to 'Ninnuvina Gati Gana' sung by Voleti garu. What a beautiful composition!! Voleti garu also performs sruti bedham on N3 to give Suddha Dhanyasi in the alap as well as during kalpanaswara.

Unfortunately, I don't know Telugu so I cannot figure out where Tyaga brahmmam is mentioned in the composition.

Requesting Lakshmanji or anyone to post the entire sahitya of the kriti and highlighting where Subbaraya Sastri mentions singing in the presence of Tyagaraja.

Thanks. Rishi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTXiaRGvOUI nannu brOchutaku by DKP/DKJ misattributed to shyAmA sAstri

Interestingly they sing a charanam that is not available here @ http://www.sangeetasudha.org/othercomposers2/g11.html

PS: It is fun searching and hopping in the www. Started listening to Emani nE of Brinda Mukta duo, search for lyrics and that leads to DKP/DKJ singing a not oft heard thOdi song. Majestic. I think that Subbaraya Sastri uniquely brings majestic music out all the while pleading through the lyrics.
