Periasamy Thooran

Post by Lakshman »

There was a discussion about this composer in the old rasikas.org but I am not able to add a post there.
Here is a link where there is another picture of him.

Thank you, Lakshman!
I did not realize there were so many songs of his!
I have met him when I was a child and remember him as a kind person. Knew then that he was a writer and a composer. Amazing how many worthwhile projects he was involved in!
While I find a few popular songs in the list, I see how many have been unsung!
There are a few typos in the first lines of some songs in tamizh script.

Thooran is how he preferred to spell his name-not nitpicking but thought it as easier to google etc-...A VERY GREAT MAN& COMPOSER & with so many MUSICAL& MOVING compositions! So many accomplishments with MODESTY combined too.Just the Keeravani composition alone is enough to make him stand the test of Time....VKV

Friends,
As always, I am late for the party.
I read that Sri Thooran's compositions were set to music by stalwarts like KVN, TMT etc. Could someone list the musicians' names vis-a-vis Sri Thooran's specific songs please!?

In one of the published books - Navamani Isai Malai, Semmngudi Srinivasa Iyer has mentioned that the songs were tuned by one Shivaramakrishna Iyer. I don't know if other songs of Tooran were also tuned by him.

Annamalai University published Thooran's songs, in 1943 and 47. In one of those ... Tamil Songs Collection, Vol 7, I think.... Thooran mentions in preface that Sivaramakrishna Bhagavathar ( music teacher in Coimbatore Ramakrishna Mission School) tuned all the songs in that Book (about 70) Also they were examined and fine-tuned by Annamalai Univ. Vina teachers' team of V.S.Gomathi Sankara Iyer, K S Narayanaswami Iyer and Tamil teacher Arunachalam PiLLai. There was another Vol ---15 of 70 songs or so, I think...similarly tuned and examined etc. Later on many of his songs have been tuned by others, I think, but I don't know if a systematic catalogue of who tuned which exists. e.g. T K Govinda Rao has tuned some. ( kaala kaalan ..atana ) Dr S Ramanathan ( naanoru ciRu vINai..chakravaham) ..T M Thyagarajan ( murali dhara ..mANd ) .

Dr S Ramanathan ( naanoru ciRu vINai..chakravaham)
I think I am wrong here; Dr S Ramanathan popularized this song. But the tuning may be by SK Bhagavathar and/or T K Govinda Rao. I think T K Govinda Rao reexamined many of the original songs and fine tuned them. I remember Thooran's few books re-published in 70's. One of those volumes has this song. And preface mentions both these vidwans only.

While I cannot talk much about dance performances of thooran, he is one terrific composer who has given many gems - particularly kaliyuga varadan-brindavani and punniyam oru koti - keeravani renditions are so so touching.

Just this afternoon, I heard from my cousin that there's going to be a concert of his compositions presented at the Academy in the near future. Hope we can find out the exact date and time...

YES. I HAVE INTERACTED W/THOORAN quite a bit & a pic of Thooran w/me, TV.S. & MY LITTLE SON (AT THAT TIME) is one of my proudest possesions. YET ANOTHER GREAT COMPOSER, CREATIVE GENIUS, AND A AN EVEN GREATER HUMAN BEING about whom VERY LITTLE IS KNOWN. I will write later as I am 24/7 on CLEVELAND ACTIVITIES RIGHT NOW. If I can do justice to SIVAN, MSG & TRS I would have done a great job!.....VKV :!: ;)

Rajesh,
AllI remember is seeing him at my uncle VVS's house and elsewhere a few times, conversing with VVS about his songs which he included in his concerts. He had a sweetness about him and I admire him as a distinguished composer.

Yesterday I head a song superbly sung by Prasanna Venkataraman . The song is by Periasamy Thooran and the tunesmith is TK GOvinda Rao and this song was written as soon as tooran heard about gandhiji's assassination . The song is KAnbaDenrO inimEL gAndhiyai pOl oru shantha mahAtmAvai - Hind Kapi(PIloo)- Periasamytooran (TUned by TK GovindaRao)

Lji
May i get the lyrics of the above song in this thread. Being Gandhi Jayanthi , let us know bit more about PT's outpouring in this thread ?

Sri.Thooran was a good lyricist but he did not set the tunes for any of his songs. Only when a lyricist creates the tunes also, he can be termed as a composer.

mANbelAm = mANbu + ellAm
mAnbu = honour, dignity, greatness, excellence, goodness.

tArakamAi = tArakamAga
tArakam = that which protects or supports. Refuge.

Couldn't tAraka also mean someone who 'carries' us across (the ocean of life - bhavsAgar) - like a kEvaT - and granting mOksha? As in tAraka nAmam....
