Ninja,
Great anecdotes!
Speaks of the great man as a rasikA as well. From what I have heard, he was a rasikA in all aspects of life...
Lucky you! You have a command performance too :)

vk, I will be meeting that periya paatti's daughter in San Jose the coming weekend; she's visiting her daughter... Will ask her about it then... Apparently, my grandma's and her sister's paattu pusthakam are with her... It should contain a treasure of compositions; their main guru was a subbarama dikshithar shishya - subramania bhagavathar. So I guess my grandmother is a direct shishya of the dikshithar paramparai.... I intend to get hold, and scan those hand written notations when I can...

lol, arasi... me pure rasika, just trying to set my childhood faults of not learning anything right :P... I must say I'm happy about one thing - my grandmother is delighted now that at least one of her grandchildren is an ardent rasika!!!! (she's visiting the US at 87 - to attend my cousin's wedding in Columbus, OH...) Her knowledge is phenomenal.. I'm learning a lot and I think I'm priviledged to hear all these anecdotes from her...

She was also telling me how beautifully Bhagavathar used to do his harikathas... singing and explaining the different aspects of thaygaraja's songs in a thyaga kalakshepam... I have to goad her to reveal more stories... :)!!!

Cheers, N.

Ninja,
All those 'vAi vazhi' (oral) accounts of my ancestors! I've missed out on recording them. Please ask your grandma to speak her memories and make sure that you record them.
Have a great family reunion at the wedding!

I thought the great Ninja could wing a command performance. Not an easy feat for me, though I am 'royal'. I am lucky if one of them sings a lone request of mine this season:)

thanks, arasi! The problem is that my paatti suddenly come sup with those stories!!! We were listening to some songs, and she saw Muthiah bhagavathar's name in the list, and suddenly said "Theriyumo, Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar irukkare, avar engallukku paattu solli koduthar!!!" That's when the story came out!!! No time to turn recorder on! She also told me about GNB's (she thinks it's GNB) singing a very nice (unique) pallavi line: "kuRangilirundhu piRandhavan manidhan kaTTAi thaavi kudhikkum"... Her house of more than 12 children would be filled with music at all time, so her guru also came up with an excellent pallavi which he sang for 2 hours in her house... I forget the line, will get her to tell me that again tomorrow on tape!!! Cheers N.

Hello all,
I am Vijay, the great great grandson of the great composer Shri Mutthiah Bhagavathar. Unfortunately our family missed his treasure compositions. Could anyone of you find them and please send me the link to get somehow? Many many namaskarams to all the elderly persons who would help me in this. I am much interested in carnatic, as the descent of the great composer, but I had no chance of learning carnatic. I will be very happy to sing atleast one keerthanai before I die... I am longing for a great Guru ...

Vijay,

The following Post was sent by Sri "T.M.Sivaraman" <tm_sivaraman@yahoo.com> to my account, which has been reproduced:

Hear what the renowned carnatic musicologist, Shri Ranga Ramanuja Iyengar had to say about the

colourful and charismatic personality of Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar in his book,"The

History of Carnatic Music":

" He was a rare phenomenon, an institution by himself. His indomitable
energy, infectious good humor and affability, large heartedness, and
happy-go-lucky indifference to economy and the devil-take-tomorrow abandon
to hedonism had a blinding glamor with an amalogam of the sublime and the
ridiculous.. . If anyone carried the day through physical makeup, Muthiah
Bhagavathar did. He spurned cotton and silk and was attired in gorgeous
clothes made of gold lace. He surrounded himself with a cloying aroma of
Javad used in profusion! His walking stick (was) engraved with gold and
silver..."

"With a loud thundering orchestra in the background he filled the
atmosphere with his own euphoria one moment; The next moment he switched
over to display of voice jugglery with striking effect. A low hum blending
with Tambura sruti, would present in a nutshell the core elements of a Raga
like Punnagavarali. The brief treatement buttressed with effective gestures
that would do credit to a dancer suggested a world of ethereal sound
images. Verily, he was wizard of sound, the soulf of music. He made a
raucous voice dance to the magic tune of a snake charmer..."

That, indeed, aptly describes the sway and mesmerising influence that Muthiah Bhagavathar held

over his audiences and his patrons, when he was at the peak of his career.

Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar belongs to the realm of great post-trinity composers. He

carved a niche for himself with his unique contribution to carnatic music. He was one of the

pioneers in creating innovative, erudite ,lyrical and bhava-purna compositions that touch the

chords of both the heart and the head.

Bhagavathar was a multi-faceted and highly talented personality. His main contribution to carnatic

music can be summed up here:

1.CREATION OF NEW RAGAS AND POPULARISING RARE RAGAS,hitherto not brought into the

limelight, like Urmika, vinadhari, vijayasarasvati, mayapradIpam, nagabhushani, gaudamalhAr,

chakrapradipa, vijayanagari, valaji, budhamanohari gurupriya, hamsanandi, hamsadipakam,

hamsagamani, and niroshta. An exhaustive list of new ragas created by him is available here at:

http://www.geocitie s.com/harikesa/ .

2.A PROLIFIC AND VERSATILE COMPOSER: He has to his credit some 400 highly creative

compositions in Sanskrit, telugu, tamil and kannada.
His compositions include 10 Thana Varnams, 1 Pada Varnam, 4 Darus, 3 Ragamalikas, 11

Thillanas, the famous English "Note" (western melody, popularized by Madhurai Mani Iyer), and a

host of 355 krithis. Besides many krithies on various deities, the krithi list includes the following

noteworthy group compositions.

-Chamunda Ashtottarashatha Keerthanams: 115 compositions : this monumental work earned him

the title of "Gayaka Shikamani" from the Maharaja of Mysore, Krishnadeva Wodeyar, with a cash

prize of Rs.10,000 and royal patronage by appointing him as the asthana vidwan of Mysore.

-Shiva Ashtotharashatha Keertanams: 116 compositions

-Vara krithies (on seven days of the week): 7 compositions

-Songs on Mavur Mahakali: 7 compositions.

3.A GREAT EXPONENT OF HARIKATHA SANKEERTANAMS (KALAKSHEPAMS) : He had a powerful

and melodious voice, and this, combined with his great knowledge of puranas and shastras and also

his ready wit, humour and wisdom made him the rage of the day, with thousands of people flocking

to his harikatha performances. Richly enhanced with his classical keerthanams and light classical

pieces like "Kavadi Chindu",his Harikatha performances caught the imagination of the public and

made him a super star in the field.

4.HIS ROLE AS AN ERUDITE MUSICOLOGIST: His scholarly treatise in Tamil titled,"SANGEETHA

KALPADHRUMAM" earned him a Doctorate from Travancore University.Besides this, he is also the

author of a highly poetical work in Sanskrit,"Thyagaraj a Vijayam", comprising of 487 slokams.

Muthiah Bhagavathar' s Biography:Born in Janurary 1887 at Harikesanallur (Thirunelveli Dist),to

poor brahmin parents,Lingam Iyer and Anandam, he lost his father at an early age of 6 and was

then brought up by his maternal uncle, who disliked his leanings towards carnatic classical music

and forced him to learn Sanskrit to train him to be an temple archaka. But young Muthiah, had his

heart set on learning and mastering carnatic music. So he left his uncle and went in search of a

guru to train him.He met a well known vidwan in Thiruvarur, Sambasiva Iyer, who took him as his

student and trained him in both the grammar and practice of music. He studied under Sambasiva

Iyer for 7 years and became highly proficient in his art.

He returned to his native village,Harikesanal lur as a youngster of 20, and started giving vocal

performances. But,in those days, there was not much fan following for classical carnatic music, and

his performances did not bring him much money and he had to struggle through lot of financial

hardship initially.
He decided to try his luck elsewhere and so he went to Travancore, where he managed to impress

the Travancore Royalty with his musical talent. He received many awards and this enabled him to

pursue his musical career with great zeal.
There was no looking back for Muthiah Bhagavathar after this and he became very famous as a

musician, harikatha performer and a scholar of music. He received Royal patronage of Mysore

Royalty also and was highly respected as their Asthana Vidwan.
He was awarded the title of Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 1930 by the Madras Music Academy and he

then settled down in Madras, where he lived till his death in 1945.

The Hallmark of Muthiah Bhagavathar' s Compositions: In the early stages of his career, he was

greatly influenced by Saint Thyagaraja, who was his role model. Thus his compositions of this

period were largely "madhyama kala'krithis, interspersed liberally with a series of "sangathis". His

"Thyagaraja" influence is reflected in his preference for composing in some of the Saint's favourite

ragas like Huseini,Sudha

Seemanthini, navarasakanada, sindhuramakriya, hamsanadham, jingla,saraswath i manohari,malavi

etc.
The Dikshithar influence: can be traced in his compositions after 1931, with "Vilamba Kala" krithis,

laced with lots of gamakams. He composed during this period in Muthuswamy Dikshithar's favourite

ragas like

Gopikavasantham, Dwijavanthi, Pahadi,Madhavama nohari,Mangalaka isiki,Kadanakuth oohalam etc.

Muthiah Bhagavathar was a well respected figure in the Madras Music Academy and was a part of

their Experts Committee and regularly participated in their annual music conferences, often

weighing in with his expert scientific deliberations in music and if one reads through the past

archives of the Music Academy's Expert Conference of 1930, he would realise the enormous

contribution of Muthiah Bhagavathar in laying down the scientific grounds for the structure of

carnatic music.

The Human Facet of Muthiah Bhagavathar' s Character: He was a most compassionate person and

always was willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who went to him for aid.Remembering his own

days of hardship, he was ever willing to feed and host poor relatives and friends at his place. At any

time, during the peak of his career, there were at least 15 people being fed and looked afer at his

home.

In conclusion, it would be no exaggeration to emphatically aver that with his demise in 1945, the

Carnatic Music world lost one of it's most creative, erudite and colourful personalities who adorned

it's portals.

The article says "Narada Gana Sabha Mini Hall was packed to capacity, with rasikas standing on the aisles". What is the capacity of the mini hall? I can't seem to find this information on the web.

# 'Rare recording of HMB's own voice'

There are different opinions over this claim...
A viewer carnaticsangeetham1 has stated..." My teacher in music is Muthiah Bagawathar's grand daughter, Smt. Rugmini Gopalakrishnan,a great veena artist. I showed her this recording and she said that it was not him singing in this recording. In my opinion, it sounds more like an early recording of Musiri."

I disagree. Certainly not Musiri.
The recording sounds like 1930's. The style is HMB since I have heard him in my younger days. My memory can still play tricks!

I happened to read the HMB write up in wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muthiah_Bhagavatar

"..In 1934, Muthiah composed music for Tamil Nadu Talkies then owned by S. Soundararaja for their Lavakusa, a film based on the Uttara Ramayana. Bhagavathar initially was very reluctant but was later persuaded by Raval Krishna Iyer, a budding contractor of Madras. Muthiah travelled to Bombay where the film was being made at the Ranjit Studios. He composed 63 songs for the film resulting in the film being renamed as Sangeetha Lavakusa.."

This is corroborated by this Hindu article: http://www.hindu.com/cp/2009/11/20/stor ... 341600.htm
( also some juicy info: "..The songs were rendered in many ragas, some of which were brilliant explorations and some a fusion, by the great composer Muthaiah Bhagavathar..." What would have been fusion in those days? )

Have any of you listened to these songs? I searched for it and found this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qY-ne6uclhk

Interesting song ( sung by HMB? ) but the music director credit is given to Prabhala Satyanarayana.

Yes, good point Ravi. Intrigue increases whether the two movies and the songs in them are related. Interesting both seemed to have been released in 1934.

Yesterday was HMB's birthday. Here's the translation of what Pasupathy has posted.....

A Renaissance in Musical Skills
by
P.SRI

Six years after Gandhiji had started the satyAgrahA movement, Muthiah Bhagavathar was in Karur. ANDippaTTi jamindar Pettachi Chettiar, a patron of music regretted that HMB had not composed a song on PaSupathISwarA, the lord of the temple in Karur. "I will sing one tomorrow in my concert", HMB said.

And he did. SaravaNabhavA, samayamidirA was the song. It was sung in a new rAgA too. PasupathypriyA. Bhagawathar was a genius. Chettiar asked for a new song and HMB gifted it, singing it in a new rAgA as well!

After the birth of the tamizisai movement, many songs are being composed in our language now. Still, to create a unique and beautiful rAgA is no easy matter.

Times of India sub-editor (and of several other publications), A.C. Rangarajan is one who is steeped in music and tamizh. He is a raconteur supreme in relating musical anecdotes. He says: true to his name, HMB is an invaluable pearl in the realm of music. He adds that such unmatched creations are possible only by those with deep knowledge and immense experience. He gives examples of Ramaswamy Dikshitar and Patnam Subramania Iyer. The former created hamsadhwani, the latter, kathana kutUhalam.

Later, in Gandhi yugA, in Bharathi's times, HMB delighted Pethachi Chettiar with a song and a new rAgA--a rare musical gift.

Bharathi and HMB
From the time Gandhiji presided over the Congress session in the 20th century, the freedom movement was regenerated-- after the lull which followed kappalOTTiya tamizhar Chidambaram Pillai's heroic effort. Subramanya Bharathi appeared, giving it a new life with his inspiring patriotic verses in Tamizh nADu.

Bharathi was a friend of HMB. Kavi mani Desika vinayakam pillai as well. They both could also sing their songs very well. The latter and K. Blasubramanian ( who has published a work called GIta tamizh) are my friends. I also knew HMB. When I was a journalist, I have been to Harikesanallur and along with his musical feast, have been treated to pongal and other delicious dishes.

We used to discuss Bharathi's poetry often. I heard that Bharathi once sang his 'jayamuNDu, bhayamillai manamE' as a rAgamAlikA in a gathering, 'like nectar from heaven', and HMB was delighted with it. When Bharathi finished singing, he said, "Subbiah, you sang the last verse 'alaipaTTa kaDalukku mElE' in a rAgA which didn't sound like a south or a north indian rAgA. What is it?"

Bharathi said, "It's the tune of a french marching song." Experts in music who were there were speechless.

HMB embraced Bharathi and exclaimed: I see the depth and what Muthuswamy Dikshithar would have experienced, in you!

HMB was teary eyed and was visibly moved...

Gauda Malhar

Post by Ramasubramanian M.K »

(Mod note: Moved from the Gauda malhar thread )
ARASI: I have NEVER heard GN Sir singing Gowda Malhar but I have some HMB stories to tell--especially his Trivandrum days!!

1. When HMB wanted to retire he found SSI and persuaded the Maharani to install SSI as the head. There was a still a lot of research needed on the Swati Tirunal's works. Although he was not a believer in abstract research,he consented because his career was not taking off(he was in his Mid Thirties and experienced the worst voice problems in his career(he used to say how hurt he felt when the Late Dakshinamurthy Pillai compared SSI's voice to the sound produced when you scratch the shell of a Coconut on a stone). ARI,MVI,CHEMBAI--the Seniors and SSi's contemporaries MMI,GNB,ALATHUR were in the ascendant- SSI with a family of 5 to support decided a steady but prestigious job with Royal Patronage as a viable economic alternative. There were fewer Institutions mostly in the South--the ones in Bombay,Calcutta and Delhi were fledgeling institutions and could not afford concerts by the stalwarts. To SSi's credit he did not treat the job as a "Pot Boiler" but devoted 100% efforts to the job, It was well known that the Mharani was a hard taskmaster. In fact there were many stories circulating in my family(my grandfather was Devaswom Commisioner in Trivandrum working uder the Maharani and as such was privy to the palace gossip-- about how an exhausted HMB after a day's gruelling session with the Maharani going over and questioning every manuscript(HMB being well-versed in Sanskrit,Malayalam and Hindi could handle these only with lot of patience!!)--the sycophants would tease and taunt HMB about his encounters with the Rani and the many material benefits that must be flowing HMB's way etc etc. HMB had "bohemian" tastes and lived a lavish life. Once when he was exasperated by his friends' poking and teasing he is reported to have said his difficulty with the Rani was one of "How to handle a person with half-baked knowledge" and is supposed to have used a lewd example not printable!!!!.

2. Now back to the SSI succession. HMB arranged an initial concert for SSI in front of the Maharaja and his mother Rani Sethuparvathybai. SSI starts the concert and the second or third item was the Pancharatna Kriti in Gowla raga. When SSI was singing this piece he noticed that tears were flowing down HMB's cheeks. SSI knew--he was very perceptive that HMB could not have been moved by his rendering. So at the end of the concert he is purported to have asked HMB what was it that moved him so much--certainly not my rendering I know!!. HMB replies Cheenu, in that song Thygaraja was attributes to himself so many faults and craves the Lord's forbearance. The SAINT did not have the faults he had attributed to himself whereas I am guilty of all those transgressions so it is proper that I atone for them and that is why I cried!!!

3. HMB as is well known was a Tirunelvelian--;like myself and ARASI I might add-In those days the tanjore cauvery basin dominated the CM scene and musicians from other parts of South India were not held in hig esteem. Once HMB was invited to perform at a Temple festival in one of the Tanjore villages--in those days HMB was one of the rare set of musicians who did Harikatha as wellas Vocal concerts. Just before HMB ais about to enter, one of the audience eager to know what the Tirunelveli musician has to offer asks innocently to one of the persons sitting next to him-(-a die-hard Tanjore fanatic when it came to Music!!)--what was HMB going to perform today. To which the mischievous Tanjorean replies ' JUST WAIT A MINUTE! IF HE STANDS UP IT WILL BE HARIKATHA AND IF HE SITS IT WILL BE KUTCHERI--implying there is not much difference in how HMB performs both forms of art!!!

4. HMB was noted for his Puns and wit(AZHAGULLA DURAI YAR ADI-- CAN BE SPLIT IN TWO WAYS --AZHAGU(BEAUTY) DURAI(MASTER) IS AARU ADI(SIX FEET) OR AZHA KULLA(SHORT) DURAI YAR ADI?(WHO is the handsome short guy?).
Also this riddle was composed by him-- PARAMASIVANUKKUMARUTHALAI, VINAYAHARUKKUMAARUTHALAI AND SHANMUKARUKKUMAARUTHALAI.

ANSWER: Vinayakar has Elephant head--which is Maru(different form of) Thalai.
Shanmukarukku AAru(Six heads) Thalai.
Paramasivanukku AARU(River) Thalai..

Now What has this got to do with the discussion on Raga--Gowda Malhar?

NONE whatsoever!! Plead Guilty!!

Other than those already available in publications, the following are compositions that are also attributed to harikēśanallūr muttayya bhāgavatar. Wondered whether these are authenticated - the lyrics of these do not bear the pōṣaka mudra, but do include the "harikēśa" mudra.

Isn’t it possible that the poshaka mudra was used by him for only those compositions created during his tenure as the AsthAna vidvAn of the Mysore court?

I have heard a few of these from a student of. Sri Balaguru who has taught many students these. Many years ago I tried to get some "famous" musicians learn them from Sri Balaguru, but was not successful.

kmrasika: Thanks for the list. Are these links still active? I get error messages for each of them.
I also came across two songs: muttukumarayyan magan muttayyane in hindola and koogi karedaru in bageshri. Both have the harikeshapura mudra. I am unable to find any information on them.
