Meaning
O Lord! Had you been endowed with Father and Mother (who bore You), would You have been subjected to these disgraces?
O Handsome Lord of cidambara! Had you been endowed with Father and Mother who bore You laboriously and brought up with pride, would You have been subjected to these disgraces?
While somebody pelts a stone at You, while someone else, to the horripilation, kicks You with a cappal, another one strikes with a bow called gANDiva, yet another, unflinchingly, cuts you with his hand-axe, somebody from the crowd abuses you 'mad' and 'ghost' and the King of madurA beats you flinging a cane - O Lord, prey tell me, whom did you think of at those times?
gANDIva - arjuna - http://www.shaivam.org/siddhanta/makira.html
kicking - kaNNappa - http://www.shaivam.org/nakannap.html
caning - building a bund for the flooded vaigai river (tiruviLaiyADal purANaM)

for a discussion and commentary on this song supposedly authored by Ponnaiah Pillai. I too thought it was by Ponnaiah Pillai but an expert corrected me and he said it is by Gopalakrishna Bharathi. He produced a second or third caraNam which has the mudra balakrishnan or gopalakrishnan. The expert is one Dr. Pasupathy from Toronto and I trust him to be an authority.

Ponnaiah of the tanjore Quartette, was a gifted vaggeyakara, and was the great-grand-uncle of Sangeetha kalanidhi Ponnaiah pillai. The two are often spoken of, as if they are the same person. Ponnaiah Senior was a disciple of Mutthuswami Dikshitar, and was AsthAna vidwan in the courts of Tanjore, Mysore and Travancore.
He was a master vaggeyakara, and explicitly declaims his devotion to His guru Mutthuswami Dikshitar, in at least three songs.
The songs are Sree guruguha murthiki ney dAsudaitini in Bhinna Sadjam(Dhenuka), SAtileni guruguha in Purvakalyani and MAyatIta swarUpini in Malavagaula, where he says Guruguha-swamiki ne dasudaiti.
Other masterpieces of this genius are :
- Ranganathude in SaurAshtra
- SarasAkshi in SailadEsakShi(sUlini)
- Amba nIlambari in nIlambari
- Sareku nee in chAmaram (Shanmukhapriya)
- Sree rajarajeswari (RamAmanohari)
- DInarakshaka in Ahiri
He has followed his illustrious guru in using ragamudra often and madhyamakala sahityam.
