Re: Lalgudi G. Jayaraman
Today (22 April 2018) I had a chance to attend one concert . One person who sat next to me said " Today is exactly 5 years since Lalgudi Jayaraman Sir passed away " and I googled now to check that it is true. One of my favourite composition of his is his Madhuvanti thillana . I am thinking now which came first- is it Lalgudi madhuvanti thillana or kanda naal mudhalai (NS chidambaram compositoin)where S kalyanaraman sings that. My gut feel that this madhuvanti both SKR and LGJ may have collaborated and taken a cue from the other(I may be wrong too)
Here is that link to this greatest violin maestro on this day 22 April 2018 playing his own thillana in madhuvanti

Sharing this from another thread :
Here's the full set of links for the Lalgudi pancharatnams played by LGJ and Srimathi in live concert.

This 1967 concert is one of those many super excellent LGJ-Srimathi concerts. If you can get a hold of the full concert, do listen to the spectacular rendition of the reetigowla aTa tAla varnam, the use of chatushra tisram in Sri mahAganaptir avatumam, as well as the RTP in shaNmukhapriya, sAmA and Ananda bhairavi.
The earlier solos of LGJ were at the absolute peak of his technical prowess, and the energy is palpable.

AndSublime concert - LGJ back in those days was at his technical peak. The energy and verve with which he used to play back then and how Srimathi Brahmanandam had to play to keep up note for note with that - no mean feat.
The best part is the tone of the gut strings on his violin and how it shines through that old recording - warm and velvety. Steel for all it's advantages falls short in this department.
.Lalgudi Bramhananadam matched Lalgudi and had answer for every thing thrown.Oh what great combination during 1960-72 period. It is stated that they played around 500 or so concerts

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Lalgudi G Jayaraman, Smt. Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi has put together a beautiful video of 11 violins playing his varnam in rAga aThANA.

Wonderful!
A system of music that can thrown up a concept like Athana and people who can take the trouble to polish this concept are worth a lot to me. So many fine touches that these youngsters have picked up. Very nice indeed.

A beautiful Jugalbandhi with Amjad Ali Khan on the sarod. That Simhendramadhyamam is haunting.

The album : Golden Music Golden Years (official channel) :
Part - 1 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Pwf8M1u8oU
Part - 2 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J66WoVqp_H4
I remember buying this with some gift money from a competition I won at school, and this is one of the best albums in my collection till date.
All gems of renditions by LGJ and GJR Krishnan (and Vellore Ramabhadran on mridangam IIRC), tugging at both your intellect and your heartstrings -- I can't pick a favourite.
Song List
1) varnam - neelAmbari - Adi - Own Composition - Played in 2 speeds with rich phrasing.
2) mEru samAna - mAyamAlava gowla - Adi (2 kalai) 1/2 eDuppu - Thyagaraja - Lalgudi's bhava laden interpretation and his cleverness in swara calculations is the highlight. There are places where he gets the arithmetic to dance.
3) darini telusukoNTi - shuddha sAvEri - Adi (2 kalai) - Thyagaraja - A storming rendition in the true spirit of GNB. This will blow you out of the water!
4) kamalAmba samrakshatu - Ananda bhairavi - mishra chApu - Muthuswami Dikshitar - A moving delight
5) aparadhamula - latAngi - Adi (1 1/2 eDuppu) - Patnam Subramania Iyer - alapana by GJR Krishnan.
6) kanna tanDri - dEvamanohari - Adi (1 1/2 eDuppu) - Thyagaraja - Clever swaras exploring a variety of endings.
7) rAmA neeyeDa - kharaharapriya - Adi (2 kalai 1/2 eDuppu)- Thyagaraja - (R,S,TA) - main tour de force of the album, with tani avartanam by Vellore Ramabhadran.
Now comes the dessert :
8) krishnA nee bEganE bArO - yamuna kalyANi - mishra chApu (2/7 eDuppu) - Vyasatirtha
9) enna tavam seidanE - kApi - Adi (3/4 eDuppu) - Papanasam Sivan
10) teerAda vilayaTTu piLLai - rAgamalika (sindhubhairavi, khamas, shanmukhapriya,mAnd) - khanda chApu (or chatushra Eka khanDa naDai)
IMHO this is some seriously special icing on the cake - it's possibly the best recording of these numbers by LGJ out there. Lalgudi gives full vein towards his unique interpretation of the lyrics, erecting the musical scaffold of raga and virtuosity in flow with the meaning of every line and I remember being stunned when I heard these pieces for the first time.
Credit goes to GJR Krishnan for matching his father on stage whether it was in his solos or the replies to some very testy manodharma thrown at him by his guru and father. Vellore Ramabhadran provides his usual blend of unobtrusive, but tailor made support.
Regarding audio quality, the uncompressed sound on the original CD is of course far better than what Youtube offers (one reason to hear the album for real).
A special word for the choice of items in this album. Lalgudi's concert packaging is as good as his music itself. This album showcases various aspects of his genius - as a composer pushing the boundaries, an interpreter of compositions, a creator of expressive and original phrases, his ability to soak raga phrases in bhava and melody, the disciplined approach to presentation, the sheer range of gamakas, his ability to make the violin speak so much that I forgot for a while I was listening to an instrumental concert, his command over laya and various ways to end swaras from his rich experience accompanying the greats and his own ideas, his expansive raga alapana, ability to improvise at will, his particular care and attention to the lyrics of the compositions, and his ability to build musical ideas with the lyrical base, his virtuosity and command over the instrument (without reducing it to a mere pyrotechnical exercise), the ability to play dangerously without batting an eyelid, right down to clever use of tricks like harmonics, the uniquely warm timbre of his sound, the silken, virtually seamless bowing, and his romantic ability to cover a huge spectrum of emotional colors and express them through the violin.
True to its name, this album is truly gold standard - it gives you a complete tour of the music of Lalgudi Jayaraman, and is an aural feast for both layman and connoisseur alike.

i could see LGJ has composed jathiswaram, varnam, krithi and thillana.
is there any other composition forms by lagudi ji?
i have heard that LGJ has done musical direction to many musical drams/ dance ballets.
so jathiswaram/varnam/thillana are out come of those.
is there any info available on those dance ballets whose music was directed by LGJ ji.

jaya jaya dEvi - a nATyam that told the story of various manifestations of the dEvi - as dAkshAyaNi, as pArvati, as karumAri, etc. The music and lyrics were Sri LGJ's. The original choreography was Smt. Rhadha's.

What a choice of ragas for navarasa - very unique far far away from say any ordinary closure like say sindhubhairavi . Mahavidwan LGJ as a composer of thillanas and varnams is one of a kind.
I further googled to find a vocal rendition of Manasa Tarigoppula , may be she was a young student of the mahavidwan. Good rendition Manasa.

Re: Lalgudi G. Jayaraman
Lalgudi Jayaraman did get the padmabhushan award not just padmashri. He got all the awards from all sabhas excepting the sangeetha kalanidhi. They say LGJ refused SK in 1980s or early 1990 as in year 1980 another violinist was awarded . As such I surely think he was fairly recognized . But ofcourse his all round brilliance was just not known earliet , but bit later in 1990s when more of us knew about LGJ other than violin.
Not sure on why this Hindu article is centered on that he deserved more . I am kind of 50 50 as I think compared to many artists like say SKR,TRS,veena balachandar etc shri LGJ did have great recognition. Is Sangeetha Kalanidhi a pass/fail test for having a yardstick as to whether he deserved more or less?
All said nice writeup from Balashankar who is related to Late MKR Sir. I loved balashankar's phrase of this great mahavidwan

After hearing the LGJ 90th year celebration tribute which was 3 plus hour recording, Just few points, overall well done.
Lovely tribute particularly the few special highlights in the order of video were
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Sudha Raja choir of taking up a shankarabharanam nottu swaras of Lalgudi Gopaala Iyer . Very well done by the team
2. Speeches by legends like UKS , Trichy sankaran, karaikudi mani and vidushi Smt brahmandam were well done
3. Shringaram snippets with the film director.
4. LGJ- Krishnan and Vellore Ramabadran playing the heavenly sukhi evarO in Kanada with the final flourish where Lalgudi sang the MMI popularized kAnadA swaras with gA gA
5. Lecdem by vishaka hari particularly highlighting the composition of tillana and ideas of LGJ. Many of her references i did not know
6. Jaya jaya devi dance ballet snippets of nalinakanthi thillana that was performed in cleveland 1994 by dancer guru radha and team. I did not have any idea of how the musical score was and i am glad i did hear part of it.
Few misses not being there
--------------------------
1.I wish few violin returns like say what he played for say MMI-SSI-GNB-ARI and bit later say for TRS-Somu-santhanam -kvn could have been included. I did not hear any accompaniment snippet
2.The violin venu veena trio of Lalgudi-Ramani-R Venkatraman was missed. That was a big miss.
3. Could have invited say significantly younger generation or almost second generation youngsters to also brief speak or just showing photos or videos to show the depth of 2nd generation would have been great . I am saying disciples like say shreya devnath ,students of Krishnan and Viji, Viji's son forgot his name . After all they are the future Of Lalgudi Jayaraman
4. Would have been nice if some fascinating rasikas who have heard Lalgudi Jayaraman like say ,Mahavishnu, LalithaRam, semmu86, Ranganayaki , MKR Ramesh's son and many more who have heard so much of direct Lalgudi could have been given few audio video moments too. May be also few sabha seceretaries like Prabhu of skgs, cleveland sundaram etc would have been nice
Any case from rasikas team Ranjani Sivakumar(Ahiri is her id) has done the compere and she did that very well.
Lalgudi next gen of Krishnan, Viji, Anuradha,Sriram Brahmanandam, Jayanthi Kumaresh and his sishya paramparas so many of them .Thank you and take if forward to Lalgudi 2030 with the same enthusiasm .
Certainly greatest and most complete vidwan and vaggeyakkara was indeed Shri Lalgudi Jayaraman.

Dear Rajesh,
In addition to what you stated Maha Vidwans TN Seshagopalan and TV Shankaranarayanan whom Lalgudi Sir accompanied in the 1980's should have been invited for tributes. Lalgudi Sir provided accompaniment and encouraged these Vidwans in their early years.Yes the Lalgudis put in tremendous effort in what turned out to be a very good show.

I am assuming fairly young vidwan Girishh Gopalakrishnan was singing with the green jibbA . I dont know him. Visually very appealing and well done,.Aurally with so much blend of instruments , i am not able to be in the same gA gA feel in audio as much as video. This visual has primarily an angle of bringing all Pan Indian stars as that is the main reason for most collaborations.shankarank wrote: ↑03 Oct 2020, 08:40 Received this via whatsapp. Resident vidvans/vidushis in Dallas area all praise for this effort!

The above statement does not take the brilliance of LGJ whom I adore and also most of the great artists whom I adore. Well done #Lalgudi90 team.
Tomorrow -Oct 04,2020 I will post in another thread where one great mahavidushi/mahavidwan dedicates to this great mahavidwan AND mahavageyakkara Lalgudi Jayaraman.

Lalgudi 90 Tribute
Congratulations to Lalgudi Krishnan and Lalgudi Viji on having got up an excellent tribute event online on the maestro's 90th. On his 80th there was a mega event I watched online from Singapore. This recent event had a lot of charm and each great name came and presented pieces from their heart.
The masterpiece in this programme is the Youtube music video featuring a galaxy of artistes playing and singing his Sindhubhairavi tillana. Here is the link.
https://youtu.be/y-Cs-q9KPMY
I made a collage of screenshots I took to make you sense what is in store.
Lalgudi Jayaraman was perhaps the most versatile and passionate creative musical genius known to our generation. This Sindhubhairavi tillana is his masterpiece. When you see and hear the galaxy of stars featured, you can see how enthused they are to sing this. Easily the experience would rank with the world's great musical experiences from Beethoven's Fifth to the Yehudi Menuhin - Ravi Shankar duo to the great operas we may remember. Indeed we should feel blessed that this has been offered to us.
God bless
