Dear Coolkarni, None of the links you have kindly given are active. I could not activate anything to enjoy Lalgudi's music What is the problem?

A RTP in Dharmavathi ..

http://rapidshare.de/files/12183230/01- ... i.mp3.html

Much later As I started to appreciate the Old masters progressively , one thing remained constant.Since lalgudi had been accompanying them all , my own appreciation of his artistry was growing continously.
And I have been continously amazed at his ability to take accompaniment to such great heights.

So here is a capsule of the tracks from some of the finest concerts I have with lalgudi as an accompanying artist.Hope you will all enjoy as much as I have done.

To start with
a track with MDR
http://rapidshare.de/files/12176525/02- ... m.mp3.html

a track from that all time great AIR broadcast with MM Iyer and Palani Subr pillay

http://rapidshare.de/files/12187267/05- ... _.mp3.html

Next GNB
a breathtaking track - his final response to GNB's swara prasthara is one of my favourites.

http://rapidshare.de/files/12209157/03- ... i.MP3.html

The same krithi , but now with GNb's disciple Kalyanraman

http://rapidshare.de/files/12224651/10- ... i.MP3.html

A lovely rendering with Chembai

http://rapidshare.de/files/12210283/04- ... a.MP3.html

Somu-Lalgudi- a combination in a class of its own

http://rapidshare.de/files/12214035/07- ... 1.wma.html
http://rapidshare.de/files/12215485/06- ... t.mp3.html

Next Nednuri-Lalgudi

A combination I was lucky enough to listen in a Live Concert

http://rapidshare.de/files/12221726/08- ... a.mp3.html

A lilting track with TMThyagarajan
http://rapidshare.de/files/12231939/11- ... a.mp3.html

and to close the first part of this capsule a track from a concert of TMt's Guru .

After his final round of swaras, Semmangudi watches Lalgudi decide not to play a response and close the the song.He then goads him and says "play on, man"
after a brief pause Lalgudi starts a detailed response , an outstanding one..

You came in a few years late , perhaps. ;(
Time rolls on .Even Rapidshare does not halt in its tracks . And so these links expire. :(
We can always revive them again - with sufficient interest

Respected Rasikas,

We join in with you all, throughout the world and all throughout this year, from our pages of the "Parvathi" Blog http://chowdaiahandparvati.blogspot.com/ in celebrating Vidwan Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman's 80th Birthday.
(As you respond to his gracious presence today you may want to draw a contrast with a younger memory of him as he was in the 60's (nevertheless in his heyday), through a new B&W photograph posted).

With our respects.

Please give me some time to pick out such tracks again.
That rapidshare phase was a pretty old one. I remember we stopped using rapidshare when its site also started pointing to ads from 'girls in our respective cities asking for dates " and we all ran away from rapidshare . Anyway mediafire has proven to be a stable site for upload and this time around the tracks should stay longer. even 10% of the free time I enjoyed
earlier.will still try and find some time and upload. Not in this vaggeyakara section though .

Not sure if your question has been answered hitherto

If you are referring to the concert which has Reethigoula varnam, Goula, Kannadagoula and followed by the Lalgudi Pancharathnams,
then the accompaniments are Lalgudi Srimathi (violin), Umayalpuram K Sivaraman(Mrudangam), Alangudi Ramachandran (Ghatam)

H N Bhagavan from Bangalore

I glanced thru the program lists of Music Academy which is updated only till year 2008,Sri Lalgudi G Jayaraman( post 1985 ) got very few chances at the Music Academy.
During 1985 - 2007 till he was performing, the concerts of Lalgudi Jayaraman violin concerts are very few compared to the chances given to others.
As long as Lalgudi Jayaraman was an accompanist,He was featured every year.
Mylapore Fine Arts featured Sri Lalgudi on every new year day and tradition is kept up by featuring Lalgudi siblings.

It is unfortunate that while he was in prime as main Violin performer,Academy did not give his due chances to perform in the academy.

It is another matter that Music Academy honored Sri Lalgudi with life time achievement award recently in lieu of Sangeetha Kalanidhi award.

It is a matter of great pride that Bangalore Gayana Samaja honored Sri Lalgudi with the title Sangeetha Rathnakara. He was the first receipient Chowdiah award from Academy
at Bangalore.

My student Ankitha's tribute to Lalgudi Mama!

Memories everywhere
You've disappeared into thin air
Don't know what to say
Feeling lost and lonely
Not having you here with me

You're in my heart every passing day
Your legends, your legacies will live forever
The discoveries you've made will live forever

Oh where did you go
You're watching somewhere from above
I'll never be alone
As long as I can feel the love

You'll never fade from our hearts
You'll always be in the light
Your memories will never part
My mind, my life
No matter if you're not here for real
You're memory lives in our hearts
But everyday we think about how you left
Like you were gone with the wind
Gone with the wind
Gone with the wind
— with Sujatha Gopal.

Dear friends
On the birthday anniversary of Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, I am listening to the 1973 Calcutta concert CD especially the RTP in Dharmavati. I bought this CD set on the suggestion from Mahavishnu.
The recording quality is excellent and the mridangam is really caressing.
Lalgudi is changing the ragas in the RTP:
1. Dhanyasi
2. Begada
3. Saveri
4. Nasikabhushani
5. Kalyanavasantha
6. Kanada
7. Sindhubhairavi (he plays four-plus octaves of Hindustani style swaras!)

I also ordered the "Incurable Romantic" online.

Can someone shed more light on this?

"..On Thursday, Ilayaraja realised the late violinist had composed a keerthana in the ragavarthini raga, the inspiration for which came from his own composition on goddess Meenakshi of Madurai.

... Ilayaraja said, long ago, he had sung his keerthana — manamurugi unnai — for the violin maestro during Navrathri celebrations at his house. “He meticulously listened to every swaram of the song and appreciated my efforts. Today, I am proud to know that my song had inspired him. But I am not qualified to speak of his greatness,” said Ilayaraja.

----------

Have anyone heard LGJ's composition in ragavardhini and Ilayaraja's manamurugi unnai?

Regarding the raga, rAgavardhini ( rAgacUDAmaNi - MD ) is the 32nd melakartha ( vivAdhi with R3 and G3 ) More details here: http://karnatik.com/c1788.shtml
The song 'kalangAdE manamE' is attributed to Koteeswara Iyer. I see this song in one of Lalgudi GJR Krishnan's commercial CD.
Here is BMK's rendition of the raga, though a different song, for reference as to how this raga sounds like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHGaSz9fLSI

VKV/MKR Sir
I was too young to know about Jaya Jaya Devi of LGJ, the only thing i know is it went to litigation etc . May I get little more information about what that his. I know it is a dance opera.

How was that performed did it have episodes like what mahabharatham had . If my memory is right it was also performed in chennai apart from usa.

Is that on goddess devi .I have heard few lovely krithis which few contemporary musicians sing which I am assuming it was part of jaya jaya devi opera . What are the songs that are part of jaya jaya devi.

Take your time .Throw some insights please.

HERE IT IS! As extensive coverage is available by GOOGLING I will be BRIEF HIGHLIGHTING VARIOUS ASPECTS NOT COVERED & POINTING OUT THINGS NOT COVERED USUALLY:
0) As is well known the story dealt with the omnipotence of Devi (the female aspect of the divinity covering six different aspects each one represented by a leading dancer from a major school of dance).
1) This was the first ever "OPERATIC BALLET"- A VERY APT DESCRIPTION TITLED "Wholesome Entertainment" BY CHARUKESI IN HINDU FRIDAY REVIEW (FRIDAY OCT 10,2008) who briefly described it as "pleasing to the eyes and ears" with LGJ'S MUSIC & RADHA'S FLOWING JATIS & CHOREOGRAPHY ALONG WITH THE REMARKABLE RESEARCH BY SUJATHA VIJAYARAGHAVAN AS WELL AS SERVING AS THE SHEET ANCHOR OF THE PROJECT.
2) This was the first time to my knowledge that the major disciples of the VARIOUS leading gurus participated in the same production playing different roles and SUJATHA played the MAJOR role not only in ENORMOUS RESEARCH NEEDED but as "the bridge between LGJ the composer and RADHA the choreographer" and in "uniting the ENTIRE TEAM with her guidance".
3) To quote Charukesi again (His Review was complete and thorough- MORE LATER): " For the musically inclined audience, there was enough in the forms of thanam, niraval and swara kritis. For those affectinados of dance, there were breathtaking jatis, Padhavarnam and thillana.
He also opined that the jatis were not complicated and they were so easy they prompted the audience to respond with foot-tapping rythmn. Correctly stated! To me as Sujatha has pointed out elsewhere LGJ had introduced very subtle nuances like in an impossible "hackneyed" raga to innovate in like NILAMBARI - which was breath taking & amazing to behold & hear!- To me it was like hearing a CONDENSED VERSION OF LGJ'S UNIQUE CREATIVE APPROACH OF MANY MANY YEARS CONDENSED IN 3 HOURS!
4) As I wish to avoid any litigation troubles I wish to state that the Cleveland Aradhana was NOT the sponsor of this production but Cleveland Cultural Alliance (according to their web site) was responsible for the production--"factual" joke if such one is possible!-

CONTINUATION OF POST#159:
5) MY OWN PARTICIPATION IN THIS EFFORT: I was involved in Chennai& Cleveland in many areas- unfortunately on the creative side as MOSTLY a spectator as the others were EXPERTS- I was witness to giants tackling so many diverse areas so deftly I was in AWE most of the time. I WAS FORCED to understand the difficulties of co-ordination involving highly creative persons!
REGARDING THE REACTIONS, REVIEWS OF JAYA JAYA DEVI:
The audiences CLEARLY recognised the Genius of LGJ & RADHA who CHOREOGRAPHED THE BRILLIANT TALENTS OF ALL THE PARTICIPANTS.NOW TO THE CRITICS:
In the typical THOROUGHNESS of Western Critics Ms.Wilma Salisbury the famous ART CRITIC(DANCE, MUSIC ETC) of the LEADING NEWSPAPER IN usa CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER HAD THE HEAD LINE " A PERFECT TEN"- Equivalent to a maiden Triple Century in TEST CRICKET- as the Front Page title in her review with EFFUSIVE PRAISE DETAILING VARIOUS ASPECTS OF THE PRODUCTION. The Indian SO CALLED EXPERT REVIEW by the well known SUBBUDU (who was there to receive an award from Cleveland in Aradhana) was his typical meandering non-deep superficial one ( in Tamil can be described as Vazha Vazha Kozha Kozha Seppan Kizanghu Morekuzambhu style not saying much of anything) in which he tried mostly to conceal his semi-knowledge (or ignorance in the sense of half empty-half full depending on the point of view) of the musical dance ballet art form. My useful contribution was to buy fifty copies of the Cleveland Plain Dealer & place it outside the door of the participants overnight like what happens at hotels like HILTON ETC so they could read the reviews next morning!
With this I leave it to MKR to complete & write a substantial account of the debut of Jaya Jaya Devi which I rank among the most THREE SIGNIFICANT HAPPENINGS IN N.A. since I landed here i n 1959 the other two being the concert of Bharat Ratna M.S.S IN UN IN '66 & LGJ-RAMANI-RAGHAVAN-SANKARAN FINAL CONCERT IN '71. There was a brief time where Kulkarni once planned to take me to doyen LGJ house . May be if I had gone to Shri LGJ's house, I could have seen his diary.Unfortunately it never happened.

Forumites/Rajeshnat/VKV--My apologies for leaving this thread hanging since VKV's 2 posts--#159 and 160. For some reason I had not followed the thread since 2014.

I think VKV has hit upon all the salient points in his posts. Each statement of his is true without any hyperbole. Myself and my wife had the good fortune of hosting him and his wife in our house in Queens prior to the Cleveland Premiere. Those few days were memorable. Radha also stayed with us during that period as also were SP Ramh who was the main male singer. A few instances:

LGJ Sir used to sit in our narrow kitchen(I will scrounge around for some pics if I can find them!!!) and run the songs by us and ask my opinion(!!!!) about the ATANA piece--example the piece where the Yakshan scolds Parvathi and talks derisively about Lord Siva--taunting her about the wayward Shiva inhabiting the cemetery,bare-bodied with ashes strewn all over the body saying --Avana Un manavalan--with this phrase ending in a drawl reminiscent of how sometimes to denote contempt we drawl the words. He will point out to us the drawl which otherwise we would not have noticed and ask for our reaction!!!. The phrase Sa Da pa Ma Pa Ga-characteristic of Atana(with dragging the Dha) would be in full display. What could we say? Talk of throwing pearls before a swine!!!!

Likewise in the Thillana in Nalinakanthi the piece begins briskly and reaches the crescendo within the first minute starting with the Arohanam (Sa Ga Ree Ma Pa Nee Ma Pa nee Sa ) and ending in the Mel Shadjam(Pa Nee Ga Ree Sa). The tempo with all the dancers exquisitely choreographed by Radha was the climax of the ballet. He will ask for our reaction as if we could offer anything better!! He put so much effort in the most subtlest of phrases and was anxious that he audience notices the nuances.

At the Cleveland festival(one cannot but doff our caps for VVS for "snaring" this before it could be launched in Chennai), LGJ was a nervous nellie anxious that every nuance of his be reproduced correctly by SPRamh and the female singers--Sumitra Nitin and Lalitha. After the initial scene he would rush behind the stage voicing his concern about the mike effects. He was intently focussed on everything that was going on stage and would flinch frequently when he felt something was not to his expectation. In one of these on-stage intrusions he was agitated . I tried to assuage him that everything is alright and that he should get back to his seat. The perfectionist he was, he said to me in very stern voice in Tamil" NEE ENNAI SAMADHANAM PANDRAKKU BADILA NAN SOLLARA POINTAI GAVANI". I hid my tail between my legs and retreated.!!!

We also had the fortune of attending the NJ concert with him. Sitting next to him(not a word would be exchanged by him with anybody--so intent he was. He would at times flinch when he found something below par(none of us noticed that anyway!!). Finally my wife gently turned to him and whispered to him to tone it down as his gestures may lead the audience to think that something was not being executed properly. The smart man that he was he then realized and tells my wife "nee Sollaradum Saridan"(what you say is correct) and then he calmed down.

After we returned back to our home with his wife and SPRamh in the Car my wife told SPRamh how well he sang--LGJ did not say a word. After reaching home he pulls my wife aside and says "You should not praise him so much--the praise may go to his head"--the kind of admonition his Father used to give visitors whenever they came to the house to praise his playing after the concert.!!

He would take a walk around the block admiring the flowers and the artistic arrangements in the neighborhood. We took him to see Jurassic Park--he was absolutely bowled over by Spielberg's artistry!!Another movie was the Thriller "The Hand that rocks the Cradle{ starring Rebecca Demonay" where she tries to harm the child--LGJ could not "stomach" this and kept on wondering are there heartless women like these.

The one movie which tickled him very much was the Hugh Grant Movie "Four weddings and a Funeral"--the naiveté in him could not grasp the bizarre sequences in the film.

Oh!! memories!! memories!!
