Dear all,

I think, you have not downloaded for our use. ( KVN 1993 mandapam concert).

KVN has a flavour for swathi krithis.

Our great musician semmangudi Sir has also propogated swathi krithis. He was continusouly rendering at all navarathis till his indisposition.

would like to have any mandapam concert of SSI

In Rasikapriya.net, mandapam concert of Trichur Ramachandran has been downloaded.

Sri Coolkarni,
Excellent KVN concerts. Really enjoyed hearing tanam with the mridangam. Thanks again. BTW, KVN has given a commercial recording titled "Swathi Thirunal Compositions" wherein he has sung ragam and tanam for the Saveri navaratri kriti.

Our deep gratitude to you Lakshman, for sharing these priceless collection with us. It is by various artistes and from various sources and perhaps assembled over the years.

Could somebody prepare a list and identify the artistes other than SSI. Is the Bhavayaami the original which he taught to MS?

After that we may trouble Lji for the lyrics :D

Thanks a lot Lashmanji and meenaji.

The 1993 Navarathri mandapam concert was the best KVN and also the best Navarathri mandapam concert I have ever attended. AIR broadcast only a glimpse of the 4 hour concert, but still I could go back in time thanks to X drive!

It was a packed audience with hardly an inch of space left on the floor right from the start of Thodaya mangalam at 5.30. The concert began at 6 pm and soon KVN was in full flow. ( I particularly like KVN's mandapam concert as he sings on his own without the usual vocal supports for obvious reasons!! :cheesy:

There was an elaborate bhilahari around teh middle of the concert and the first thani followed smarasadhamanasa balagopalan. My aching knees by 2 hours was soothed by an outstanding thanam in Arabhi and an even better neravel Vanchi kripakhara as part of the main krithi. He didnt fail to deliver a few padams. The concert ended around 10.15pm.

Usually the mandapam concerts are of 21/2 hour duration. But on occasions ( I think once every 6-8 years) when navarathri and the Padmanabhaswamy temple festival concide, the concert will only end after the temple procession finished which is about 3 hours. On the last day which is the Aarat day, the procession after the aarat will end around 10.15 by which time Bhujagashaayino will be sung.

My only advice to any rasikas going on these longer concerts is to keep themselves slightly dry, and enter the mandapam with an empty bladder. Otherwise you will be doing Kegels rather than listening to the concert.

Where can I find the lyrics for most Swathi thirunal's Compositions. The website musicalnirvana.com is down for some unknown reason.

Does any other website provide the lyrics?

TKG has released a book on most ST compositions. IT's a worthwhile investment if you are living in India or have someone you know who can send it to you.

It is published by the Ganamandhir trust. Red book with yellow sides. Printing is quite good. IT's part of his series of books on Thyagaraja, MD, Syama Sastri compositions.

So I realize this thread has been inactive for awhile but I have a query I did not know where else to post (and didn't feel like it warranted a whole new topic)... so... yea...

There is a famous jathiswaram in ragamalikai/m.chapu known to dancers. It is a composition of the Thanjavur quartette... or so I thought, until I heard this:

http://www.swathithirunal.in/htmlfile/265.htm

and here is the jathiswaram:

rtsp://gls-nt3.library.wisc.edu/music/anderson401/g2/e49g-2.rm

so is this a swarajathi by the Maharaja or a jathiswaram by the T-quartette. I suppose it's a jathiswaram in both cases since the site says the sahitya was most probably written by someone else.

I know Vadivelu was a musician/composer in the Maharaja's court... could this be some explanation for a mixup?

umesh,

a lot of TQ compositions were originally attributed to ST. They were musicians at ST court and it perhaps was not uncommon for such folks to not take credit for their work in those days - particularly when the King was such a huge patron of the music.

Of course this became a huge controversy sometime ago with Veena Balachandar claiming ST never composed etc. etc.

In any case, TQ did compose a lot of compositions that were/are attributed to ST.

Only after reading http://www.swathithirunal.in/miscellanios.htm did I find out that Swati Tirunal's Dhansri tillana was tuned by Lalgudi Jayaraman.

A number of popular Swati Tirunal krithis have been tuned by Semmangudi including Deva Deva (Mayamalavagowla), Pankaja lochana (Kalyani), Bhavayami raghuramam (ragamalika), Bhujanasayino (Yadukulakambhoji).

I am sure there are many more. Is a list available? Has Lalgudi tuned any others?

One krithi that comes to mind is Serve Srikantham sung in Mohana Kalyani. The raga wasn't "invented" during the times of ST. Probably Muttaiah Bagavathar tuned it in Mohana Kalyani. May HMB whilst his time as the principal of ST college tuned a few krithis.

Looking at the info on this website - a possible interpretation is that the manuscripts had the name mOhana kalyANi, and HMB actually gave life and shapte to the name.

tulaja's sangIta sArAmRta talks about a rAga called mOhana kayANi - so it is quite possible ST had tried composing in it.
