I shall always regret the fact that I skipped these performances by Dr.S Ramnathan , while making choices..

Wonder if there are more recordings available of these performances.I remember there used to be more themes "CM for the Layman" etc

Mercifully , recordings like these bring back some cheer. ;)

The lives of great devotees reveal to us that the soul in every one of us is the stage where spiritual triumph or submission to worldly attachments is played. The birth of Tyagaraja and his career of vairagya is an example of the former and the latter is our incapacity to get over the snares of fear, greed, ambition, vanity, envy and pride.
no wonder so many chaps get worked up with SVK .:D

Anyone know what's the story behind this?

In one of the krithis in Prahlada Bhakthi Vijayam Thyagaraja pays his tributes to Purandara dasa. Can someone tell me which krithi this is? I found one link on the net but I could not read the lyrics since the fonts were not being displayed correctly.

Thank u.

Sridevi

In case you can access the link, here is the website that mentions the krithi.

http://www.geocities.com/vipanchee/sanskrit.html

PP:
Tyagaraja pays his respectful tributes to devotees in his matchless jewel, "Endaro Mahanubhavulu". Specific mention to haridasas is found in his Yamunakalyani kriti, "Haridasulu vedale". We also find his expression of regard for Sangita Pitamaha in the invocatory passages of "Prahlada Bhakti Vijayam".

Êirt ìatmule‘nu bidmaceRif hirgu[mul bafucunepufun!

I contemplate on the glory of Purandaradasa, who sings the divine attributes of Hari, which remove all evils.

SriDevi,
AFAIK there is no Thyagaraja Kriti wherein he mentions Sri Purandara Dasa by name. He has mentioned Bhadrachala Rama Dasu by name in some kritis. However, As you have brought out, in the Introduction to the Prahlada Bhakti Vijayam, he mentions specifically Purandara Dasa. The Lines are as under -

durita vrAtamul(e)llanu badi mArceDi hari guNamula bADucun(e)puDun
paravazuDai velayu purandara dAsuni mahimamulanu dalaceda madilOn

The meaning is as given in your post.
PS : Only the English part of the webpage is readable.

Kana Kanaruchira in raga Varali

charanam 7:
Kaaminchi prema meera Karamula Nee du
Paada Kamalamul battu konu Vaadu Sakshi
Rama naama Rasikudu Kailaasa Sadanudu sakshi
Mariyu Naarada Paraashara Sukasounaka Purandara NakajaaDharaja

meaning:
Charanam-7: Hanuman – who meditated on Ramanama: Narada, Parasara, Sukha, Saunaka, Purandara, Indira, Parvati and Sita are all witness to the great happiness derived by your devotees who surrender at your divine lotus feet most devotedly. It is a great pleasure to see the lord Sundareshwara (Siva) and Narayana, the lord who has the sea as his bed.

I beg to differ. I am giving hereunder the word-by-word meaning. Here 'purandara' means 'indra'. IMHO, Sri tyAgarAja would not mention 'purandara' unreverentially to Sri Purandara Dasa.

C7 For whatever I have said,
hanuman (vAdu) (literally he) – one who, having been enamoured (kAmiJci) by You, holds (baTTukonu) Your (nIdu) Lotus (kamalamula) Feet (pAda) in his hands (karamula) with overflowing (mIra) love (prEma) – is a witness (sAkSi);
Lord ziva – the resident (sadanuDu) of kailAsa - the enjoyer (rasikuDu) of the name (nAma) of Lord zrI rAma– is a witness (sAkSi); further (mariyu),
those important persons (mukhyulu) like sages nArada, parAzara, zuka, zaunaka, indra (purandara), pArvatI – daughter of himavAn – the mountain (naga) (nagajA) and sItA – daughter of Earth (dhara) (dharaja) are witnesses (sAkSi) – aren’t they (gAda)?
O Lord (Iza) of all that is beautiful (sundara) (sundarEza)! O Lord comfortably (sukha) resident (vAsa) in the Ocean (ambudhi) of Milk, churning which the pitcher (kalaza) (kalazAmbudhi) of nectar emerged!
O Lord wearing golden attire! the more those who have sought refuge in You (AzritulakE) (vAsAzritulakE) behold You, the more it is sweet.

Dharaja :
as already explained by vgvindan, purandara -> indra (The destroyer of cities)

I guess 'nakaja' here could be 'nagajA' -> daugher of the mountain -> pArvati

I thought so too, but why does rAmadAsa sing 'adrija vinutuDu, bhadragirIshuDu'?

adrija vinutuDu - these words IMHO, you are probably referring from 'nanu brOvamani ceppavE' kriti. According to the following website, where this kRti is listed, the word is 'adrija'. Here, this word means 'pArvati'.
http://www.engr.mun.ca/~adluri/telugu/c ... adasu.html

Regarding your query, 'why does rAmadAsa sing', I may only explain that according to phala stuti of viSNu sahasra nAma, it is Siva who initiates pArvati in the tAraka nAma.

The same view can also seen in purandara dAsa's 'rAma mantrava japisO' where he says 'sOmashEkhara tanna bhAminigorahida' (the mantra that was taught by Shiva to his wife).

OK...that makes sense now...I assumed that adrija vinutuDu was an adjective for 'bhadragirISuDu'...my fault....
Thanks for all the explanation...

This excerpt is of particular interest:
"Simply because Tyagaraja was a great bhakta, his music is not bhakti music. The fact that Wordsworth wrote about flowers does not make him a botanist. If Tyagaraja was a bhakti composer , he would only have written bhajans. I would go so far as to say that if Tyagaraja had not written music, we would not be talking about him today, and he would be remembered as a minor saint."
