Thanks Rajesh. That article by Sriram is quite informative. That kind of myth-free historical information is my cup of tea. I have read about this A.M. Chinnaswami Mudaliar's transcription of 800 of Thyagaraja's krithis in staff notation. Are there copies of that in circulation? If not, given that that was compiled with the help of a direct disciple of Thyagaraja raises its stature and someone should take up the job of republishing it. I also wonder how close are the current version of Thyagarja krithis to what is notated in that Mudaliar book, including the various sangathis etc. Quite intriguing.

Venkataramana bhagavatar was a very, very good composer.. He has composed several krtis on his Guru thyAgaraja including vada rasane in pUrvakalyANi besides a pair of stotra-s in praise of thyagaraja

The famous Harikambhoji swarajati - SdN-dPdn or RAma nA morAlinci is attributed to him..

His varnam in Kedara is a masterpiece..

Ananda mayamanave in Jyotiswarupini used to be sung by Dr. S.Ramanathan, and is , by Prof.SRJ..
KanulAra, in DhanyAsi, on kanchi Varada was a staple of the alathur duo.

Guruvaru mahimala in Anandabhairavi and RAmabhakti jEsina in Begada are part of TNS's repertoire, as is the popular thodi piece, RarA vasudeva varakumAra..

Neela ramgopal sings the Namanarayani piece, PagasEya beautifully..

Vinaradu manavi in janjUti is a lovely piece, which S.Ramanathan has sung.

There are songs of WVB in Gaula and bhairavi floating somewhere in sangeethapriya.

I have heard praises of the Lalitha song Chedi poke, and the nAdanamakriya song Paravasamaye, but haven't heard them yet.. Recordings are most welcome!

Veena Kuppayyar and WVB are said to have collaborated to produce a fantastic palindromic bhairavi varnam Sarasaku rAku sarasa..

Sadashiva rao of Mysore was a student of the bhAgavatar; and the quality of his compositions speaks for his musical lineage..

It's strange to know that WVB has not wriiten about the present day stories of Tyagaraja's Songs.
It may either nidhi chAla or mundu venaka or parithApu or kanugontini.

In his Hindu article Sriram writes,
"Rather uniquely, father and son were to write the earliest biographies of Tyagaraja as well. And rather refreshingly, there are hardly any myths"¦..Significantly, neither father nor son mentions the famed tale behind the composition "Nidhi chala sukhama,"

Nice to read about the mention of vAlAjapETTai venkaTaramaNa bhAgavatar, the prime disciple of ShrI tyAgarAja, and guru to many illustrious musicians and composers, one being maisUr ShrI sadAShiva rAu.
His songs are nice with the madhyamakAla and the varNams have extra ciTTa svarAs.

Any authentic list of his compositions?
One I can recollect- Neevenannu-Darbar-quite often sung by TVS.

Neeve nannu brovavale is given in the SangItasampradaya pradarsini, and is attributed to a certain 'Srinivasayya' whose biography is found in the appendix - VaggeyakAra-charitamu.. It is notated in KApi, in this book. However I have heard renditions only in DarbAr ..

People who have learnt this song should help to resolve this puzzle..

It is interesting to note how myths are built around famous personalities which become 'facts' of history. I am aware of Kshetra puraaNas being written once a new temple is built. They try to incorporate some stories from the puraranas and give it an Agamik background. Very recently I was invited to write such a purana with sanskrit shlokas for the local Temple here which I firmly refused :)

SarveBhyo namonamaH,
Sorry to interrupt your chain of thoughts...I need help urgently....I am looking for the meaning for the song Kal Mari Adiya by Andavan Pichai. I have the lyrics, I can translate it but, translation is not the same as determining the meaning of why...for example the Charanam...there has to be a story behind the lines...can anybody help me with this? Please?

When I visited Madurai recently I heard that the kritis of Thyagaraja in palm leaf manuscript form are preserved at Madurai Saurashtra Sabha. I also heard that some people are claiming that Venkataramana Bhagavathar was the Vaggeyakara whose kritis are wrongly attributed to Thyagaraja. I also understand that the people in charge in this sabha are doing pooja to these manuscripts but not allowing anybody access to these. How far are these true

During last December Prema Rangarajan gave a concert consisting of Bhagavatar's Kritis. I am willing to spare the recording, if any one can upload the same
