Always remember the name of the Lord
This is the sole support to attainment
God is a lion to the elephant of sins
prevailing and protecting those who seek refuge; always..
Lord, you protected Prahlada and
you are the one who tore Hiranyakashipus' belly; always..
when Draupadi in her distress appealed to you
you granted the boon of an endless sari; always..
ajamila called his son, your namesake
and you mercifully came and saved him; always..
worship the cosmos Lord , Purandhara Vithala
Touch his holy feet, yes worship Shri's Lord
Always remember the name of Hari!

meena/ramakriya,

(in my utter ignorance) I am having some troubles linking the sentences-meaning to the lyrics.
could you be so kind as to edit the text in a way that the lyrics-meaning connection becomes clear?

thank you

Rasikapriya,

Lord knows, I am no expert in kannaDa, but with Meena's translation/running meaning and Ramakriya's clarification, I have put together something. I assume you were looking for something like this. I hope Meena/Ramakriya don't mind, and if I have goofed up, they can fix it and educate both of us in the process.

P: Please meditate (smaraNE mADO) on hari at all times (nirantara = continually), because this (idu) is the only means (nirdhArA) to attain salvation (paragatigE).

C1: Oh Hari, you dissipate our elephantine (gajjake) sins (durita) with a lion-like roar (kanThIrava)! You (nI) are the divine (pAvana) force that protects (rakSaka) the devotees that think of you (nenesida) and come to you seeking refuge (SaraNAgata).

C2: You protected (rakSisida) prahlAda from whose thoughts you were never absent (smaraNegaida)! You are the one that tore open (sILida) the stomach (udarava) of the cruel/evil (duruLa) hiraNyaka (hiraNyakana).

C3: The second (akshaNa) you heard her cries for help (moreyiDala), you are the great/exalted soul (mahAtmA) who destroyed/rescued (kshayavitta) the young lady (taruNi) draupadi from her burden (bharadinda)[1]

C4: The power inherent in the mere chanting of your name is exemplified by the story of how once (andu - that day) you appeared/came (bandu) to protect (saLahi) the sinner ajamiLa from Lord yama on his deathbed because he had called out his son's name (his son was named nArAyaNA) with his dying breath, and granted/showed him (tOrida) bliss/happiness (Anandava).[2]

C5: Lord purandara viTTala you (nI) are the husband (ISa) of lakshmI (SrI) and the protector (oDeyana) of creation (srishTige) - You are the oine we must pray to (bhajisi) so that we can touch/attain (muTTi) you/your feet (salvation).

[1] - the episode in the kuru court where draupadi was disrobed and how krishNa protected her with the gift of a never ending sArI/pallU.
[2] - the reason why, even to this day, many Hindus name their children after gods in the pantheon.

rs,
In the episode of ajAmiLa, the Lord Himself did not come but His messengers came to rescue him (ajAmiLa) from the clutches of messengers of yama. - SB - Book 6 : Ch 1.
However, if the kriti wordings are such, then I have nothing to say.

Meena, many thanks for your post

Ravi and vgvindan,
thank you for the word2word translation and the corrections added. I was not familiar with the story of ajamila and yama; it's such a joy to be discovering new things

thank you

VGV,

I agree that the story of ajamiLa is not portrayed in totality here - even in one of the ugabhOgas popularized by Smt. MLV (aneyu karedarE), it is 'ajAmiLanu karedare nArAyaNa bandantE, aDavialli dhruvarAya karedare vAsudEva bandantE' etc ... etc....I think the point being made is that a mere chanting of 'nArAyaNa' is enormously potent, with amazing consequences....

In RShankar's transalation 'from her burden (bharadinda)[1]' should be replaced by 'in a hurry (bharadinda)[1]'

I always enjoy RShankar's translation.

Ramakriya,

Thanks for the acknowledgment, but all I did was to embellish the meaning posted by Meena!
