Sorry sir, I cannot remember the lines; I saw someone perform it a long time ago. It is on Lord Rama.

Really hope someone can help me with it...

Finally figured the first few words- "Sri ramachandra nannu brova idi manchi samayamura"...

Yes, it is a pada varnam.

Thanks,
Janaki

Lji - Nice to see that you are back home!

The varNam that Janaki is looking for is a padavarNam, not a tAna varNam.

Here are the lyrics with some corrections:

Putrakaameshti yaagamuna kousalya sathiki komarudavai kaligi

A: Vishwamitruni priya sishyudavai vividha vidyala ghanamuga nerchi

1. Maruti hrdayamuna nindule(ne?)

2. Oka maata oka baanamu oka sathi yani jagathiki delisina?

3. Paadamu thagilina maru kshaname raathini naathiga jesi brochina

Kaliki palidhi Kaluga kalithi (these words do not make much sense) Sri Raama naamame dhanyopaayamu

I could listen to the audio if you can post it here and give you correct lyrics.

Hello shishya,

Thanks for those corrections. Unfortunately, I do not have the audio- I will ask the person who gave me the lyrics..

Also, could it be 'rakshasi' (protection/to protect) (just like raksha) and not raakshasi since i feel like the person who gave me the lyrics has used 'aa' for longer sounds and 'a' for shorter sounds?? Sorry it this is wrong- my understanding of Telugu is extremely limited.

Thanks,
Janaki

Janaki,

if you are talking about having another syllable after raksha , then I will have to listen to the audio. AFAIK, there is no word as rakshasi in Telugu.

Janaki, since rigapada and Sishya seem to be busy, I have tried my hand at this (trying to put to use the knowledge I have acquired from the translations they've done). The underlined text in last caraNa svara sAhityam eludes me completely. I have redone the transliteration using the scheme that everyone is familiar with, and have made some minor changes to the words based on my (admittedly limitted) knowledge of telugu:

pallavi
Sri rAmacandra nannu brOva idi manci samayumurA
putrakAmESTi yAgamuna kousalya satiki kumAruDavai kaligi

Oh rAma (SrI rAmacandra), who was born (kaligi) as the son (kumAruDavai) of the chaste (satiki) kausalyA after the performance of the putrakAmESTi yAgam (yAgamuna), this (idi) is a good/appropriate (manci) time (samayamu rA) [1] to protect (brOva) me (nannu).

anupallavi
viSvAmitruni priya siSyuDavai vividha vidyalu ghanamuga nerci
mithilA nagari svayamvaramuna sItanu cei paTTina sitArAma (SrI rAmacandra"¦)

(Oh rAma, who) became the beloved (priya) disciple (siSyuDavai) of the sage viSvAmitra (viSvAmitruni). The rAma, who after having learnt (nErci) several (vividha) skills (vidyalu) extremely well (ghanamuga) [2], attended the svayamvara (svayamvaramuna) in the city (nagari) of mithilA, and accepted/took (paTTina) sItA's (sItanu) hand (cei) in marriage, and became inseparable from her - sItA-samEta-rAma (sItArAmA).

muktAyi svara sAhityam
daSarathuDu priya kaikayiki osagina varamula phalana vanavAsamu jEsi
daSakaNThAdula garvamuna naci dharanijAnu tErcina dASarathe

Oh son of daSaratha (dASarathE), who spent 14 years (jEsi) [3] in exile (vanavAsamu) as a consequence (phalanu) of the boons (varamula) that were granted (osagina) by the king, daSaratha (daSarathuDu) to his favored (priya) queen kaikEyi (kaikaiyiki), destroyed (nAci) the pride of the demons including, but not limited to (Adula) rAvaNa (daSakaNTha), and in the process, rescued (tErcina) the daughter of the earth (dhariNijAnu)!

caraNam
rAma nAmamE jagatiki raksha

The name (nAmamE) 'rAma' is the sole protection (raksha) for this world (jagatiki)!

caraNa svara sAhityam 1
mAruti hrdayamuna nelacina (rAma nAmamE...)

(The name 'rAma') who is unshakably established (nelacina) in the heart (hrdayamuna) of hanumAn (mAruti) (is the sole protection (raksha) for this world)!

caraNa svara sAhityam 2
oka mATa oka bANamu oka sati yani jagatiki t(d)elpina (rAma nAmamE"¦.)

(The name 'rAma') who demonstrated to/showed (delpina) to the world (jagatiki) the following (yani): that he was a man who only had to speak (mATa) once (oka) [4], whose aim was so good that he needed only one (oka) arrow (bANamu) to find his mark, and that he would have only one (oka) woman (sati) in his life (is the sole protection (raksha) for this world)!

caraNa svara sAhityam 3
pAdamu tagilina maru kshaNamE rAtini nAtiga jEsi brOcina

(The name 'rAma') who blessed (brOcina) ahalyA when he changed (jEsi) a stone (rAtini) into a woman (nAtiga) the very next (maru) second (kshaNamu) his feet (pAdamu) brushed against (tagilina) it (is the sole protection (raksha) for this world)!

caraNa svara sAhityam 4
I jagamuna ninnumincina deivamu kaladA rAmA
sakala carAcara sruSTikini sAkshivi nIvE satguNadhAmA
nIvE nityamani nIvE satyamani ninnE nammitini nijamuga rAmA
kaliki palidhi Kaluga kalithi (these words do not make much sense)
Sri rAma nAmamE dhanyOpAyamu

Is there (kaladA) another god (deivamu) in this (I) world (jagamuna) to better (mincina) you (ninnu), Oh rAmA? Oh repository (dhAmA) of excellent/superior (sat) character (guNa), you alone (nIvE) bear witness (sAkshivi) to the creation (sruSTikini) of all (sakala) the creatures of this world, both the mobile (cara) and the stationary (acara) [5]. Believing that you alone (nIvE) are eternal (nityamani), and the supreme truth (styamani), I have verily (nijamuga) placed my faith (nammitini) in you, Oh rAmA! Thus, it is clear that taking the name (nAmamE) of rAmA (SrI rAma) is the only virtuous/auspicious (dhanya) means (upAyamu) [6] of survival!

FOOTNOTES
[1] rA is used as a term of familiar endearment (like aDi/aDA in tamizh)
[2] ghanamuga I think literally means solidly
[3] jEsi literally is making/doing
[4] the concept of 'oru Sol, oru vil, oru il' in tamizh
[5] caracAra = cara + acara
[6] dhanyOpAyamu = dhanya + upAyamu

Shankar sir,

Thanks a lot...very kind of you to do the translation. It is a lovely composition. I am sorry about the last line- the person who gave me the lyrics could not understand the last line- bad audio.

Thanks again,

Re: Need lyrics and word-word meaning for a varnam in Todi..

Post by jharati »

I bought one CD (Panyam SIta Rama Sarma's) and which includes this varnam.
My daughter performed this varnam last week for her Arangetram.
Here are the correct words if any one else is looking for this,

kaliki palidhi Kaluga kalithi (these words do not make much sense)

correction for this should be,
Kalimi balimi kaluga jEsitivi - Sri rAma nAmamE dhanyOpAyamu
You provided me with wealth and strength and your name (SrI rAma) is key to salvation
jesitivi - made
kaluga - provided
kalimi - wealth
balimi - strength
