I do not find any thiruppugazh starting with 'marakatha' in the online tamil texts at projectmadurai. Nor in kandar alankaram/kandar anubuthi. I read somewhere this song is in praise of Madurai Meenakshi. So, it is possible that it is not frm thiruppugazh. Whenever Arunagiri Nathar mentions pArvati, it is mostly in the context of calling kArthikEya as her son.

Is this the rendition? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBkCB-6YoY0

( sidebar: while we are it, here is Oothukulliyinile, a twin recording to 'marakatha vadivum': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftUjp6ZR3Dw )

VK - thanks for unearthing those.

By the way, the mis-spelt/pronounced word (not by Smt. MSS, but by the poster) in the second song (UttukuzhiyinilE) grates as much as piece of shoal would on a black-board.

Just curious here.

So would oothukAdu not be correct then, yet I see it all over written that way. Curiously though, depending on who is speaking Tamil, sa becomes sha -- so which is correct?

sApAdu sApittu varEn --> shApAdu shApittu varEn

SollungO --> shollungO

seri thAnA --> sheri thAna

There is no 'sh' in Tamil. It is a different thing to retain 'sh' sound when saying Sanskrit origin words, but to use it for real Tamil words is not correct. Though many families use it that way from time immemorial, it is still incorrect. The sad part is when professional singers use it.

srkris would say that there is no 'sa' in Tamil either. ( Hope I am not misquoting him ).

(BTW, s-p you may have misunderstood what rshankar was referring to. He is referring to the double 'l' in oothukulli. It is a transliteration error on the youtube poster's part )

Back to the topic, E-S, does the song sound like thiruppugazh to you, now that you can listen to the song? If not, the authorship is TBD.

This does not sound like a thiruppugazh. I listened to a better copy here:
http://www.mukundan.co.in/STREAM/Carnat ... ndex4.html

Still, I couldn't get the complete song. The first line has words, the next line is aaahh, oohh, and this pattern repeats. At some point, the song switches to a tAlO, tAlELO. Hence cannot be a thiruppugazh.

maragatha vadivu sen kadhir vElA
pada malar amirtham...
etc.
At some point, I hear a murugOn, that is all.

I feel the use of sha for sa is restricted to a particular group of people...traces of lingering hangover from colonial influences in diction, perhaps.....

I thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful presentation on kAmakOTi pIThavAsini and, just an observation, watch at 4.49...
