mAra jananIm AshrayE in nATakapriyA

Post by tyagarajadasa »

Could anyone post the lyrics of mAra jananIm AshrayE in nATakapriyA?
I guess it is a composition of NC Krishnamacharyulu?

Thanks,
Gokul

bimba means "kOvai pazham" (tindora).

So - one who puts to shame (vinindita) the red Kovai-pazham(bimba) with her red (pATala) lips (adhara).

I really like the way the composer has made simple descriptors so much more poetic, like the use of 'tArAdhipa sahOdari' for 'candra sahOdari' (from lakshmi ashTOttaram) and 'kaiTabhAri hRt pITha vAsinIm' for 'vishNu vakshasthala sthitAm'.

Thanks Rajani. I studied Sanskrit for two years during +2 and enjoyed it tremendously; but not long enough to gain some depth.

E-S : It is admirable that you are still so much in touch. Most people would forget.
S-P : Here is the Charanams' translation:

kaiTabhAri hRt pITha vAsinIm - The one who resides in the pedestal that is Vishnu's heart/chest
kAtyAyanyAdi santOshinIm - who gives joy to Parvati and other goddesses
pATala adhara vinindita bimbAm - who puts to shame the "bimba" fruit with her red lips,
praNuta guNa kadambAm - who has a bunch of virtues that are exalted/praised
jagadambAm - who is the mother of the universe!

nATaka priya nutAm - the one praised by Natakapriya,
pramuditAm - the blissful one,
nAradAdi mouni vandya caritAm - whose deeds are worthy of salute by Rishis beginning from Narada,
hAtakAbharaNa yutAm - who is decked with gold ornaments,
vasumahitAm - who is celebrated for prosperity
sumahitAm - who is well-adored,
mahitAm - worshipped,
hitAm - who is favourable
tAm - (in) her (I seek refuge)

Thank you so much Rajani for this interesting read. What is the break- up/literal for kaiTabhAri - reference made to Vishnu ? (hRta - heart, pITha - seat/pedestal, vAsinIm - resides) and what is the reference for natakapriya?

Thanks S-P.
kaitabha +ari = enemy/destroyer of Kaitabha ( of Madhu-Kaitabha fame)
The other is simply Raga mudra, i think.

Can anybody point me to the Audio of this song? The meaning is so lovely- thanks Rajani!
As it is there are not too many songs about Goddess Lakshmi (just an observation, not a rant)!

Thanks!

Rajani - lovely...wonderful translation as always.

Gokul - are you learning this song?

S-P - madhu-ripu (the enemy of madhu) and madhusUdana (the slayer of madhu) are names for vishNu/kRshNa related to madhu - and pArvati is refered to as madhu-ripu sOdari....

I heard one of the leading lady vocalist's rendering of this song. What is disturbing is Sahitya shuddi. KaiTabhAri has become kaiTapAti. And repetition in neraval makes it even worse.
