The lyrics for calamEla jEsEvayya by Kuppuswamy Ayya are the same as the one posted. This is from P.Sambamurti's book Karnatic Music. guess there is some doubt about the composer.

Marybum,

Well, it is quite popular in music concerts. Not sure about dance though. If you haven't listened to this beautiful varnam, here is Sanjay singing (with sahityam for the chittaswaram and the ethugade swarams.)

Can someone give me a word to word meaning and context of last chittaswara sahityam please. I am taught this as "something about don't hold a grudge against what happened, the dayakara u are that u saved draupadi" What happened? what is the author talking about not holding a grudge against? Thank you.

*A few minor spelling and transliteration corrections and readjustment of spacing is given below: Now the meaning should be clear!

P: calamEla jEsEvayya cakkani mA rangayya |

A: kala kAlamu nI pAdamulE gatiyani nammi yuNDaga
(muktAyisvara sAhitya)
kari moraliDa vini, rayamuna veDali, makarini dunimi,
kari-varadu-Dani birudu dharanu velasi, suralu pogaDa galigina
patita pAvanuDa! nA manavi vina ||ca||

C: nannu brOva nIku bhAramA

1: idE bAgani UrakAnu nIvunna ninu nE viDacedanA

2: nIdu smaraNa gAka vEre eruganu, nIraja nayana, danuja mada haraNa

3: anDANDamulaku-nadhipati-vani niNDa moraliDaga, vinI-vinaka yuNDa
sari-yagunA? madana janakuNDa, varamosagi anudinamu

4: A draupadiki valuva sabhalO tarugakanu osagina mahA daya gala ninu
pogaDanu nA taramagunA, siri velayu rangapurini Elina pati,
nAgala rangani komaruNDa, telisi teliyaka nadacina palu naDatalanu
madi talupa valadu, valadu, sharaNu murahari

Note1: I only changed a letter here and there and readjusted the spaces to bring out the meaning more clearly.

note2: in C4, instead of "valuva sabhalO tarugakanu osagina" I suggest using "sabhalO taragani valuva-losagina" as the syntax is more straight forward, provided the tAla is ok. More research and discussion is required about this.

Thanks. I still have some doubts

1. VIshnu is son of Ranga? Who is Ranga?
2. what does nAgala and komaruNDa mean?
3. What is valuva in valuva sabha?

Based on what Smt. Savitri has posted in the nATya thread, the words in proper sequence would be:
A draupadiki sabhalO taragaguna valuva osagina mahA dayA gala ninu pogaDa na taramagunA?
Smt. Savitri has explained that valuva is a cIra or saree.

Many meanings can be found for'nAgala'.
But 'graceful' may be the meaning in this line.
Ranga Is SriRanganAThaswAmy of SrIrangam
valuva is garment sabha is congregation

nAgala is a fill up word.
The poet is saying that he is the son of Ranganatha
Komarunda means I am the son.

Vijaygopal, what is a 'fill up' word? Are those words that have no meaning?

The reference of 'komarunda' is to the Lord and not to the composer
'komarunda' means 'a son'.'fill up word' ? What is it?

So the poet is referring to himself as a son and saying "do not keep in mind what i might have done with or without knowing. Please give sharana to me".

So does this mean this varnam can definitely not be interpreted as a heroine singing to her Lord in sringaram. Since son= komarunda makes this song unequivocally sung by a male bhakta to a lord. Or does komarunda loosely translate as "child" and not necessarily son?

Thank you so much for explaining aaaaabbbbb :)

@rshankar i couldn't find the post you mention. Could you please provide the link?
I don't know the 'correct' sequence of words but what you wrote as provided by Smt. Savithri helps understanding-wise. But i have not been taught that sequence. :)

This seems to be a composition where a devotee is praying for God's grace.
There does not seem to be any nAyika.
I altered the sequence of the words in carana{4}
so that the meaning would be clear.
As you have mentioned, the varnam is taught the way it is composed.
'komarunDa'[son] is a reference to Lord Ranganatha.

5a5b,

Certain corrections or changes made by you are not required.

1. For kAla kalamu read kalakaalamu
2. uramuna is correct. It is well known that Lord Vishnu rushed to protect his bhakta, getting up from his sleep , forgetting his chakra, kireeta, angavastram, garuda and lakshmi. He was dishevelled in appearance.
3. karivaraduDani is correct.
4. manavikonu is correct. It is short for manavinoppukonu which means accept my pleadings.
5. C1 : It is “ niivunnanu ne viDachedanaa !”
6. C3 : It is = aNDaNDamulakunadhipati vaani niNDa moraliDagaa, viniivinakayuNDa sariyagunaa, madanajanakuNDa varamosagutaku dinamu
7. C4 : A draupadiki valuva sabhalo tarugakanosagina mahaadayagala ninnu pogaDa naa taramagunaa, siri velayu rangapurini Elinapati, naavale rangani komaruNDa , telisii-teliyaka naDachina palu naDatalanu madi talupa valadu, valadu sharaNu muraare

Here the author is referring to himself as the erring and gone-astray child , seeking pardon from & refuge in the Lord, just like a father should correct and pardon his child for its mistakes.

@classicallover
Thanks. I just was curious if 'child' in C4 is strictly mentioned as a male child because someone earlier wrote 'son'. Just to get some context on nayika/nayaka bhava of the varnam when dancing. Usually, this varnam can easily pass for a nayika bhava. Unless the varnam explicitly states a male as the self.

Going off track, VIshnu forgot his garuda and chakra during gajendra moksha? All depictions i have see show him on garuda and he slayed the crocodile with the chakra. So, please throw some light on the connection i am failing to make. THanks.

ksl,

komaruNDa means son only. kuuturu is daughter. I mentioned child in general sense because any both the son & daughter can go astray.

What you see is not always true - appearances are deceptive . Even the title Gajendra Moksha is deceptive and misleading ( reflect on it and you will know the subtle difference - ask me if you don't ) !! Vishnu could not know what to do when he rushed to the river to protect the elephant without his weapons - that is the true definition of bhaktavatsala, bhaktaparaayaNa, etc.. He summons Sudarshana chakra later and slays the croc only after Lakshmi is beside him.

Namaskaram. I have learnt this Varnam from my guru from Kalakshetra but I have failed to find any good recording of the audio. I was wondering if anyone could help me get a good quality, uncut version of the audio, the version choreographed by Rukmini Devi. I will be willing to pay for the audio if it is necessary, I don't mind. Assistance will be highly appreciated guys.
