Hi!
Can someone help me break down the meaning of this verse - it is Adi Shankaracharya's Shiva PanchAkshara NavaratnamAlA stotram. I know the general gist of it. But, word to word would be really helpful....especially the 2nd and third line.
1) MangalapradAya goturanga te nama shivAya
2) GanagayA tharangithothmAngathe nama shivAya
3) SangarapravruthavairiBhangathe nama shivAya
4) AngajAraye karekurangathe nama shivAya
My transliteration is not very good...have cut and paste the sanskrit lyrics. Please let me know if there is some other way I can post the sanskrit lyrics. It is verse 17 in the stotram.
मगलदाय गोतुरंग ते नमः िशवाय
गगया तरिगतोमाग ते नमः िशवाय ।
सगरवृवैिरभग ते नमः िशवाय
अगजारये करेकु रग ते नमः िशवाय ॥ १७॥
Thank you
Priya

Re: Help with meaning Shiva Panchaksara Navaratna mala stotram verse
sir/ma'am
The stotra I can get a hold of is called ShivapanchakSharanakShatra Stotra. The extant verse is as follows:
मङ्गलप्रदाय गोतुरंग ते नमः शिवाय
गङ्गया तरङ्गितोत्तमाङ्ग ते नमः शिवाय ।
सङ्गरप्रवृत्तवैरिभङ्ग ते नमः शिवाय
अङ्गजारये करेकुरङ्ग ते नमः शिवाय ॥ १७॥
Meaning as I see it:
auspiciousness-giver * one whose horse/vehicle is a bull * I bow down to you, to Shiva!
by Ganga* wetted/cascaded is your upper body * I bow down to you, to Shiva!
engaged in battle-enemies-destroyer (metaphorically means vanquisher of the six enemies Kama kridha lobha moha mada mastarya) * I bow down to you, to Shiva!
Cupid/Kaama's enemy * holding an antelope in your hand * I bow down to you, to Shiva!
Please note the corrections to the verse.

Re: Help with meaning Shiva Panchaksara Navaratna mala stotram verse
Thank you very much! This is very helpful!
The ganges line...does the line mean the waves of Ganga shower/cascade his UPPER BODY....or his hair is filled with the waves of ganga? I am trying to depict this in dance and want to know if the verse is specific about UPPER BODY or his head/hair or just that he is showered.
Thank you!

Yes, I guessed this was for dance
uttama+anga is translated as head, usually. I said upper body. You can depict either or both. Not hair alone.
