The song was originally composed in mukhAri by Gopakrishna Bharati. N.C.Vasntakokilam popularized it in SaNmukhapriya rAgA.
To add to the confusion K Ponniah Pillai (the sangita kalanidhi) composed a song with the same starting words, also in mukhAri. You did not mention whose song was rendered by TMK. Many of the wordsin both songs are very similar.

i have heard that in the same way the song `eppadi padinaro` of suddananda bharathi
was tuned in nadanamakriya
and re-tuned to karnataka devagandari by dkp amma
was tuned in nadanamakriya
