I missed the word hrdi in the Charanam which means "in the heart", though I cannot explain how this can fit it when the song is addressed to the mind already!

Also, the last word "niravadhika" can be taken along with sundara and then means "the infinitely beautiful".

I am not very well versed in Sanskrit grammar so I have a question about how this song is written. Should it not be written with each phrase ending with an M sound as happens in Dikshitar kritis in the same vibhakti? There are some phrases, such as 'nandideva chandishadi vandita' and 'indu shekhara' which seem like they should end in M sound.

The actual words are, as an example-

kaivalya varadāyaka -
paramakāruṇya chidambarēsham -the giver of liberation and other boons, the most merciful lord of Chidambaram,
shankara - goureesham -Shiva, the lord of Gauri(Parvati).

These are called Samaasas=compound words in Samskritam. In fact the power of Samskritam, as compared to other languages, is infinitely greater because of Samaasas.

In a Samaasa, the vibhakti-ending (it is M or m for dviteeya pullinga ekavachana) comes only at the end of the compound word.

Take an example from Dikshitar:
bhukti-mukti-prada-daharAkAzam

Here it is a Samaasa and splits as
bhukti-mukti-pradam +daharAkAzam.
So Shiva is the giver of bhukti and mukti, and Shiva lives in the inner chamber of our hearts. Two ideas, combined. The final word has only one M at the end.


The main leverage for a composer is that he can split or join words to achieve the alliteration and metrical length of phrases.
