I vaguely remember that this article appeared in The Hindu with the photograph of Chembai singing and featuring the accompanying artists. It is nice that Meena has brought this out for our attention.

Posting by Ramakrishnan (Srkris):

Before one of her performances at the Shanmugananda Hall, Mumbai, M.S. came to know that Chembai Vaidyanatha Bagavathar was in town. She wanted him to grace the function. Accordingly word was sent to him.

Chembai walked into the hall around 4 p.m. M.S., who was singing a raga, stood up with folded hands and sang: karuna chaya enthu thamasam Krishna (why the delay in showering kindness on me, Lord Krishna?) This was also the song Chembai usually concluded his concerts with.

The elder musician in his inimitable way responded, saying "bale bale". The audience gave a thundering ovation to the two great musicians.

"The recognition most coveted by Carnatic musicians, is the invitation to preside over the annual conference of the Music Academy of Madras. The title of Sangeetha Kalanidhi goes to the person presiding over the conference.

Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar received the invitation and the title in 1951.Chembai Selvam - Biography of Chembai written by LRV, 1954 (pg 194-200)

In his presidential address, he said:

“Music has an individual, innate beauty, different from other fine arts. Originating in the air, it dissolves into the air, giving 'Nirguna brahmam' - which fills all space - the form of 'Nada brahmam'. Practice of music is, therefore, worship of `Nirgunabrahmam', and sangita is a yoga by itself. ... I have no doubt that the art and practice of Carnatic music will flourish and grow with good cooperation between vidwans and rasikas" [The Hindu dated 22 Dec 1951]

Rightly enough, Srkris has named this forum as rasikas.org. The vidwans of the current and future generation MUST go through this site and develop a bond with the rasikas all over the world.

"Between 1932 and 1946, Chembai's music was captured on several phonograph discs. Those were the days before the advent of the microphone in concerts and a singer was entirely dependent on the timbre and reach of his voice for a successful concert. Chembai was uniquely blessed in this respect, for his voice which had great depth, was a special attraction. 'Sruti' Issue 98, Nov 1992 - by N.Pattabhi Raman".

Wondering who would be having the complete list of these recordings!

Chembai's advice to MGR (former TN Chief Minister)

See post #285 in this same thread - http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=41947#p41947

By the way, I have heard that this was not the first concert where chembai and maharajapuram have come together by playing violin and mridangam respectively.

They had done the same thing in 1926 (I think for Veena Seshanna)

srikris,
Thank you! How much at ease Chembai seems in his 'accompanying' role! Maharajapuram as fellow accompanist adds to the charm of this picture.
A young Vilvadri Iyer on the ghatam. The woven coconut leaf backdrop speaks of the simple beauty of an old world conert venue...

Oh that reminds me, Maharajapuram is holding the mridangam on his lap (which is not the way most professional mridangists do), and Chembai lifts up the violin when playing, while usually most carnatic violinists rest it on their foot.

Maybe thats a pointer they are not too much concerned about how others play the respective instrument?

Violinists in western classical music ensemble hold the violin like Chembai does (in this picture) while standing, when they play solo. I have seen Joshua Bell holding it in the same way.

It is said that Dakshinamurthy Pillai didnt take Palghat Mani Iyer lightly as the latter was always trying to upstage the former. But Dakshinamoorthy, the seasoned giant, was not the one to give up so fast.

But Dakshinamoorthy Pillai, it seems, tried to avoid playing in combination with PMI if he could help it. PMI said that they hadn't played together in many concerts, and whenever they did, it was mostly for Chembai, since Chembai always tried to bring both together in his concerts. When Dakshinamoorthy Pillai had complained to Chembai that he was trying to bring both of them together on stage dispite his own (Dakshinamoorthy's) non-inclination, Chembai had replied "Both your success is interlinked".

Invariably the combination of this duo used to produce thunderous thani avarthanams, as recounted by Palghat Mani Iyer in later years.

The above photo is probably one of the last times they played together... Pillai, I think, passed away in 1937.

Music hall in memory of Chembai soon

PALAKKAD: A music hall in memory of Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, one of the greatest exponents of classical music, is proposed to be built at Chembai village thanks to the efforts of the Tourism department. The Palakkad District Tourism Promotion Council has submitted a preliminary plan for the construction of a Rs 40-lakh-music hall adjacent to the ancestral house of the legendary classical vocalist.

“ The front yard of the tharavadu of Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar in Chembai village of Kottayi grama panchayat consisting of the ootupura and its surroundings measuring 20 cents has been donated by a relative based in Chennai to the Tourism department. He has informed the authorities in writing that he was ready to maintain the building also. Playbacksinger Yesudas has also made it known that he was willing to chip in the necessary funds for building the music hallâ€

Yes I have heard Semmangudi's Dvaitamu...and of course the great rendition of MDR...
However I am eager to listen to Chembai because when in form he always brings out a novel facet of the raga and treats it in a rather different way from other performers..

just the heading:

CHEMBAI : Social Reformer of Music:
--------------------------------------------
If Chembai vaidyanatha bhagavathar is known as just a good musican, then it is like several historical facts are not being taken into account.
It is necessary to know how chembai dealt with the era he lived,to the society, how he responded towards the injustice happened in the domains he got into.
. . .
. . .
-------------------

will translate the whole,if the thread is still alive.

Are there any known recordings featuring Chembai with Chowdiah and Palakkad Mani Iyer?
Also, if anyone still has Chembai's Dvaitamu Sukhama, could you please upload?
