The Dhanammal Legacy - with Family Photos

Post by varsha »

Last night I listened to a 3mt Khamboji by Viswa and slept .
Dreamt that he sang four songs from list of Mukthamma's concert at MS's House , for me .
And I found all these recorded , and on my pc today morning :)
Here they are , for the rest of us to appreciate this legacy.

Varsha: Yes, please dream on.
I have wonderful memories of Viswa sir from the 8+ years I spent in Connecticut. He pretty much reignited my interest in Carnatic music. I think Vegavahini ragam and Veenapustaka dharini in particular are absolute Dhanammal school classics.

The other immortal Viswa song that is indelibly etched in memory is Amba paradevate in Rudrapriya.

Must have been a special concert by T. Viswa and would have been an experience to be a fly on the wall. I love T. Viswa's rendition of Vidhi Illarkku. I have not heard the Sankarabaranam padam. Interesting to note Ghanam Krishna Iyer composition on Moopanar ancestors.

And what a dream it must have been. Viswa with L Shankar! What an amazing Sankarabharanam! Thank you.
I've heard that there were recordings from the mid 70s of LS playing at Wesleyan with Viswa, shortly before he the John McLaughlin era.
Is this from that period?

Admin can move these to a special thread on Viswa , if needed . Not sure if one is there , though.

Great idea. I think we should start a Viswa thread. I am surprised that there isn't one already.
I will start the topic, maybe the mods can merge the relevant posts to that thread.

(mod note: Merged the Viswa posts from http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic. ... 68#p222568
Because of the merge, the intro post, the one below this message, is not the first post of this topic )

Sangeetha Kalanidhi T Viswanathan

Post by mahavishnu »

I was surprised to not find a thread about this great vidwan, although his music has been discussed in several other threads.
So, upon Varsha's suggestion, I thought I would initiate a dedicated topic about him here.

Here is a short bio: http://dpnelson.web.wesleyan.edu/viswanathan.html

Mods: Could you please move the Viswa posts from the Dhanammal thread to here?

This morning while I was commuting to work I listened to a portion of an incredibly beautiful concert (early 70s) by Vishwa likely at the music academy accompanied by musical royalty of the day -- PMI and Lalgudi Jayaraman. RIght in the middle of the concert is one of the loveliest pieces of music I have ever heard -- a Malayamarutham krithi by Muthu Thandavar. It is particularly notable for the keen understanding between VIshwa and Lalgudi each goading and inducing the other to higher and higher levels of creativity all the while holding aloft the bhava and beauty of the raga. At one point, Vishwa is so overcome by the beauty of the moment, that he begins to sing some of the sahityam. At that point, a dam opened for me as I was moved to tears.

The piece is marked as "kandapin kaN," on YouTube but when I googled it, sure enough it was listed somewhere as being Muthu Thandavar's but it was listed as a Shankarabharanam krithi. However, the version I heard was definitely Malayamarutham. I have since been trying to find a full vocal version in Malayamarutham but to no avail. Could someone please help? Thanks in advance!

Thank you! This is a gem of a find indeed. Beautiful composition. Seems to be quite rare. Needs to be sung more in concerts by the likes of Sanjay et al who highlight Tamil compositions.
