from sreevalsan menon’s site
http://www.sreevalsanmenon.com/neyyatinkara.html
as rightly mentioned, he was born in very humble surroundings.product of swathi thirunal college, learnt under Semmangudi and later Ramnad Krishnan.Umayalpuram Sivaraman once remarked his music as a blend of Semmangudi and Ramnad.Being a ‘non brahmin’ he faced many problems, but reached the top with shear hard work and quality. In fact he should be the first non brahmin to sing at navarathri mandapam.
Such a popular singer in all parts of Kerala in 70s and 80s and he was a regular performer at chennai season and some of the concerts are very much fresh in memories..
One such concert at music academy in 88 or 89.He sang a pallavi in natta kurinji, whih goes like thathadhimi thadhimi dhimi ena nadamadum sabhesan…
And a concert at Mylapore Fine Arts Club, that bahudari is still fresh…
His style was uncomplicated, not much brigas, not much circus in swara singing, but such sruthi sudham!
Needless to say,he popularized Swathi compositions including deva deva, padmanabha pahi, jaya jaya padmanabha, pankaja lochana, anjaneya, and padams like alarsara paritapam, aliveni, panimathi.
As a person,he was so humble.
May his soul rest in peace…

Shocking news indeed. Only this weekend, my friend and I were talking about him - great musician. He used to give lec-dems/lessons for a Malayalam channel. Even though my folks don't understand Malayalam they used to regularly watch it.
NV's twin casettes released by SVT, Pittsburgh has only kritis of various composers - a great source for learning - excellent pataantaram.
VK Raman sir, the Swati Tirunaal Day at SSVT will be held in August, I think. Your idea is an excellent one. We should definitely do something.

It is with deep regret that I note the passing away of Vidwan Shri. Neyyatinkara Vasudevan, yesterday afternoon in Trivandrum. Shri Vasudevan was one of the foremost Carnatic musicians of his time, creating a paDhati and bAni unique to himself, and was very popular in the eighties and nineties. He has done several concerts during that time in Chennai, specially a regular in the MA. But somewhere in nineties, he started to fade away, mostly due to health related reasons, and has been not keeping well for a long time.
His Manirangu Alapanai and rendition of Jaya Jaya Padmanabha (Swati Thirunal kruthi) was a treat by itself and was mostly a regular piece in all his major concerts. So also is Intha sowkhya in Kaapi and Govardhana giri dhAra (Darbari).
He had a large fan following among rasikAs and also some very good disciples. One of his principal disciples, Shr. Srivalson J Menon, is now regularly performing in Chennai during the season, and also is a leading artist from Kerala.
Shri Vasudevan will be remembered for his services to the Carnatic music fraternity for a very long time and for the entertainment he provided to many rasikas like me during his hey days.
May his soul rest in peace...

We will miss NV for a long time. His prime disciple Srivalsan Menon will keep the banner of NV flying high. During the Swathi Thirunal festival in Washington schuled in August 2008, I have requested Shri MG Menon to dedicate this festival to the memory of immortal NV

If anybody has his residential address, please email it to me. Sri Venkateswara Temple, Pittsburgh would like to send an official condolence letter to his family. He was the first vocal teacher at the Sri Venkateswara Temple, Pittsburgh. And as someone pointed out, the Swathi Thirunal Aradhana will be
held in SV Temple, Pittsburgh during the Navarathiri time(always). We will definitely try to do sing the songs that he popularised.
ajit.

(mod note: Moved from the General Section )
Friends,
I did not see any discussion on the sad passing away of this great musician last week. Not sure if I missed the posting somewhere, but here is the Hindu news item.
http://www.thehindu.com/2008/05/14/stor ... 621200.htm
If there is a topic somewhere and I repeated, I apologize.
A big loss to Kerela and more broadly to Carnatic music. Condolences to his family and students. For those who dont know, one of his prime disciples is the renowned Kerala vocalist Sreevalsan Menon.
Here is a nice concert of his on Sangeethapriya.
