One of the leading performers today of Carnatic Vocal. Their voices & strengths compliment each other perfectly. Excellent pAdAntharam and shruti suddham. After MSS, it's R-G that come close to perfection in terms of voice modulation.

Having had training both in Carnatic as well as Hindustani AND on the violin (they started out as violinists), their music is very well rounded and each concert is a wonderful experience for the rasikA.

Comments and insights are welcome!

The full credit goes to their father Balasubramaniam. He had been grooming them from their childhood, sacrificing all his other interests. He deserves recognition for giving us such good artists.

I think that the Hindustani training helps very much in maintaining the shruti suddham. There is and always has been greater emphasis on that in that style of music. It is something that I think all Carnatic musicians ought to study for a year or two.

The reverse is also good for Hindustani musicians who could no doubt benefit from the emphasis on advanced Talam, Bhavam and Sahityam.

Their viruththam is surely their usp .

I have heard the following, infact the viruththam that is mentioned in the article , I heard it in my first concert of theirs in 2004 at RA puram vinayakar temple.Usually gAyatri takes the first and third rAgamAliga with ranjani taking the second. Especially gAyatri taking off with the first is simply brilliant (supersonic tarasthayi lift ).
http://www.hindu.com/fr/2009/03/06/stor ... 190200.htm

Heard the following viruththams in the last few years:

# Viruttam (Soolam Piditha Ema Paasam Suzhatri) - Kambodhi + Amirthavarshini + Sindhu Bhairavi

# Viruttam "Naadum Nagaramum THedi thirindhu siva peruman enru paadum" - Bilahari + Suddadhanyasi + Sindhu Bhairavi

# viruththam "ullagellAm UNarNdhu ODarkku ariyavan" - Arabi
+ "thirunAma anjezhuthum" - sAveri + "thirunAma anjezhuthum" - kamAs - thevAram

They are one of the finest singers in viruththam ;). Few viruththams are tuned by their dad shri balasubramaniam

Having said above with their viruththam which is like a 3(no of ragas) X 100 relay ,I wish one of the days when I attend their concert they have to go for 6 or 7(no of ragas) X 100 relay and preferably end not in sindhubhairavi(all musicians generally never take a raga after sindhubhairavi ;)) on that day.

I may be wrong, but I think he even composes (not just the music) some of the viruttams they sing (I call them 'designer' viruttams, because of the incomparable/asAdya poruttam of the viruttam to the song that follows! :))

The website of Ranjani Gayatri mentions the name of their father as Shri N Balasubramanian. It is possible that the other name that you mention may be a "Nick" name or pet name. ;)

Balumani is his pet name in Mumbai circles. The late T.S.Krishnaswamy was one of the Best Teachers in Mumbai.

MKR and others, Balamani (bAlAmaNi) and not Balumani is his pet name. Knew him since I was a child in Matunga. He lived in Panch Building near the King's Circle.

RaviSri, we know him as Balumani! He may be many names to many people, certainly versatile enough for that. But I know quite a few people who know him as Balumani. No ambiguity about the person himself, though. King's Circle, Ranjani Gayatri's father.

My ultimate favorites! The most beautiful thing about their music is how their individually different voices come together to make one sound! Truly fabulous.

A very good interview. They make nice sisters and a nice pair of vidushis--and are articulate.

Wondered about their saying how an abhang is more difficult to learn than a padam. May be so, but to 'sing' a padam as every word in it gets ideally emoted is a tougher task, I would think :)

Arasi,
The sisters are very articulate and intelligent young women, but I think that this interview did not do them any justice because the questions were, IMO, rather pedestrian....

I liked it. Normally, Gayathri comes off as more accomplished. The question on the chemistry between them, and Gayathri's 'feeling blessed to sing with her sister' was a nice response. The question about language, bhakthi also were fielded well. It gives a sense of satisfaction to understand the bond between the singers, and it is palpable in their singing.

In the last 9 years or so , they have won the best concert yogam nagaswami prize from academy atleast 2 or 3 times. Academy and INdira sivasailam foundation have tied up and certainly that must be weighed in . Congratulations to RA GA sisters , they deserve it .

Gnanam is really overrated. At the end of the day, we are convinced that technical mastery over your instrument or your medium of expression is really what can make your music communicative. Whatever your mind thinks, your voice has got to be able to execute.
They are making a statement for the times. The reason again Carnatic music when rendered by a raspy voice is appealing to many , is the exquisiteness of expressions ( that points to a certain sAdhakam to achieve it) and also importantly expressions of laya and verve!

In current times however audience - just like I was in my initial days - is attracted to what is currently prevalent notion of a pleasing voice.

However when few of us found them impressive , their voice delivery is one thing - some dismissed it as not too wholesome - an imitation of their violin shades , but mainly there were no other female representation of that vervy style of SSI school with unrestrained kArvais! And there were no other female artistes that would be as strident and punchy as them for a long time.

Ranjani Gayatri review of NGS in The Hindu dated Dec 13,2018. NGS hall concert of Karthik Fine Arts had HNB-SaiGiridhar-KVG as the team . The photo in the below link shows music academy with SaiRam and Chandrasekhara Sharma , thank god in the concert writeup and the photo HN Bhaskar remains the same.

Atleast 10 or 12 years back i was searching if subramanya bhujangam has been taken up by any CM artist. If my memory is right i found one by Bangalore Shankar and there was also one by Vidushi R Vedavalli.

Now Raga sisters have taken up that in their extremely impressive rendition. The video shoot is in the besantnagar arupadai veedu temple.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-0hCiDfYHk

I wish they had also shown visuals like the 6 arupadai veedu , that way the 6 temples which are bit localised Tamilnadu history are also known to the world .Look at the credits too, lot more names you do know . Well done the supporting team and Well done Ranjani Gayatri sisters.
