It is now more than two decades since I started following the progress of MS Sheela as an artist.
And one aspect of her career strikes me very powerfully. Her unswerving adherence to tradition and avoiding treading on the quicksand called Film music.(I remember with so much pain, the brilliant start Sangeetha Katti had in HM only to fritter away...)

In all her forays into devotional music and Light Music (Bhavageethe) , she brings a beautiful touch of classicism .

With this thread I hope that some of our Bangalore Buddies will be encouraged to throw up some concert fare.
I will keep up my end with a choice of short tracks of dasara padas and bhavageethes.

Hope you all find it a pleasant experience

AND OFCOURSE I SINCERELY HOPE THAT THIS THREAD WILL GET OUR DEAR DRS, TO WAKE UP FROM HIS HIBERNATION..

I have listened to her on musicindiaonline http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/1/m/artist.52/.
her rendition of pakkalanilabadi in kharahaarapriya is really good. she is one artiste who gives her 100% to all the aspects of the rendition. i have attended a concert of her in bangalore gayana samaja last year when she sang an elaborate "entharAni" in harikambhoji, with a really good neraval at "sEshuDu..."

Dear Coolkarni-ji,

I was just lamenting the lack of Purandara Dasa representation in the 05 season on the sangeetham portal, and MS Sheela came up for discussion briefly. She has been in my t houghts, and seemingly u divined it :)!

Might u have a complete Purandara Dasa krithi with alapanai and Niraval/Swarams of hers....would be worthwhile. Hope u r enjoying your time in chennai... :)

Happy New Year!

She has been neglected by the CM world which has not taken due note of her talents.Endowed with a melodious voice and quite creative in her manodharma singing, she has somehow not recieved her due recognition.
Here is a full concert she gave at the Mylapore Fine Arts in Dec.1999.The exhaustive and beautiful Sankarabaranam krithi lasting 52 minutes is the main item in the concert.

Smt MS Sheela gave a chaste classical concert at the Sydney Music Festival on 7 June 2009. Her main items were Himadrisute (Kalyani) and Pakkala (Kharaharapriya). The Kharaharapriya alapana and kalpana swaram were very nicely done.

Smt MS Sheela is such a gem in person..so humble for such an accomplished musician. Her collection of songs by 'Royal Composers' is wonderful to listen to. My daughter ( who does not consider herself a good singer) was pleasantly surprised to hear encouraging words from her during a class when she visited Birmingham Alabama.
We wish her the best in her musical journey.

Thank you for sharing the song. I enjoyed listening to it. The song in Keervani is one of the songs in M.S.Sheela's mp3 collection of songs Vaaggeya Vaibhava' The glory of Mysore composers' sung by vidwan S.shankar and his disciple Prashanth. This CD is produced by her company Hamsadhwani Creations.

I just listened to ms Sheela’s rendition of Darini Telusukonti, the shudhdha saveri masterpiece on Raagam AIR channel. It was breathtaking- I had tears at the end of 25 odd mins. This has to be one of the finest renditions- after GNB and likes. What talent - man why is she not superfamous beats me. She has a mellifluous voice, great Shruti shuddam, bhava and manodharma. Exquisite Kriti rendering. She sure deserves to be in the top musical echelons imho.

M. S. Sheela has been performing at the top level for many years. I did a detailed interview with her a while ago. That she is not the crazily popular star is because of where she lives - Bangalore and nowadays doesn't travel out for family reasons. (my interview is archived in their newsletter section here: http://www.srlkmandira.org)
